And Robin, despite instinctually knowing she shouldn't take any risk, listens to Steve because she's lonely and desperate and he's her only friend, and, as expected, following his advice goes terribly wrong 🥰

That only applies to the tiny ones on land. The deep sea ones, which are that big, absolutely taste like crab or lobster and are in fact fished in some places. Apparently they also sometimes just get caught in lobster traps; they aren't necessarily restricted to the abyss!

Maybe Nancy left Jonathan because things weren't working out. Maybe she was distracted, or she realized she didn't feel the way she did before. Whatever it is, it's something that frightens her. Jonathan once said she tried to rebel by doing the same things as everyone else. He would feel hurt sering her return to Steve, but most of all, he would be disappointed. Because all Steve did was to be right there when Nancy got scared, and she clung to him thinking he could be her proof that she still had a normal life waiting for her at the end of the apocalypse.

So when Robin - oh so intelligent Robin - saw the signs (a breath held for a little too long, a glance adverted just a little too quickly), she thought she understood. She thought that, maybe, she wasn't alone, that she wasn't creepy or wrong or unloveable, and she approaches her one rainy night - maybe in front of her house, maybe in an empty parking lot - and she tries to talk to her. She gets nervous and scared but she's trying to be brave and she tells her she thinks she knows how Nancy feels, or something like that, that she sees her, that she sees her dreams and her genius and magnificence, and Nancy is just tense as a bow, wanting to run away, softly saying Robin, maybe this isn't the time to talk and I think you should go home, and Robin doesn't understand until she sees Steve come out from behind Nancy, and she thinks this must be the moment they stopped being friends, because his eyes are hard and cold when he says what are you doing here? And she told you to go home, Robin, so go home. And Robin so desperately asks for just one more minute, one more second to let them explain herself, when Steve steps forward and roughly places his hand on her chest and pushes her back.

And while it may sound odd, Robin never so much like a lesbian before. Or what her mind told her it meant to be a lesbian sometimes, when she felt particularly alone. Something that appeared to be a normal woman at first sight, but was not quite one. Something deceitful. Steve would never lay hands on a woman. He barely touched her, really, he just pushed her back, but the way he did it - it felt so much like he was fighting another man who was trying to take his girl. And Robin hated herself for it.

Steve looked at her with disappointement, maybe said what is wrong with you? or just go home, but he definitely said don't come near her again, and then he left - not before telling Nancy to come with him. For a split of a second, the back and forth of Nancy's eyes almost made it look like she considered staying with Robin - her boyish charm, her brilliant mind, her adorable mannerisms, her earnestness, her bravery, the hurt in her eyes - but then she got scared again, and gave her one last apologetic glance before joining Steve, leaving Robin alone in the rain.

Ok, but Robin reaching her breaking point after this and isolating herself from everyone else.

Mentally, it's just too much. She's not a freak, or a predator, or whatever the hell it is that Steve seems to think she's become. His distrust definitely hurts the most- the guy who told her nothing would ever make him not want to be friends with her during one of the most emotionally vulnerable moments she's ever had.

She quits her job at Family Video and gets another one in a neighboring town, somewhere no one would ever expect to find her. She takes the buses and transits until she miraculously is able to get her license, and Robin then manages to buy a shitty little car with some help from her parents.

Robin struggles; the mental strain on her mind is severe. She loses basically her entire support system, and only Max, Will, and El reach out (with Joyce sending along her well-wishes and some freshly baked cookies). Everyone else takes sides, and she feels completely adrift because of it.

Eventually Robin meets someone, it's nothing serious, but it's her first 'relationship' and she's so excited about it that it accidentally slips to Max and El when they come over to bug her one day and she's on the phone with her new 'friend.' Robin knows she's not technically over Nancy, and the other girl is aware of her complicated feelings, but it's still nice to want someone and be wanted in return.

She enjoys the fun while its lasts, and Max and El don't speak about it with anyone else until Dustin accidentally discovers where Robin works one day as she's locking up for the night. He sees her exit this (artsy-store?) with another girl, the two of them holding hands discreetly and exchanging a quick, sweet kiss after they clamor into Robin's shitty little car.

Dustin immediately tells the Party, and everyone knows by the next afternoon.

Steve and Nancy, who didn't work out for obvious reasons, have quite a bit of reckoning to do now. Nancy because she finally accepted that she wasn't straight and that she has a crush on Robin (who's now been MIA for several months), and Steve, who can't believe he let himself sink back to his old high school levels of asshole-ness over a girl. He hurt the one person who whole-heartedly would have done anything for him, and he doesn't know how to fix it.

look. look, not to keep being a ronance simp, vickie hater on main, but it would've been much more interesting for robin's character if vickie had been used against her. like, either A. robin gets vecna'd and vickie is a prominent figure in her nightmarish trance because it's all about homophobia and how she's a "freak" etc. she starts to become more withdrawn, insecure and distant after, and New Friend Nancy picks up on it because usually robin doesn't stfu, and they discuss their respective vecna trances and robin comes out to someone other than steve and receives affirmation that his acceptance is not some sort of fluke and her friends do care about her in spite of her sexuality etc. or B. vickie just gets fucking bone crunched, and robin has to learn how to deal with it and ultimately realizes life is too short to hide and watch from the sidelines and sometimes you have to take a risk before it's too late and comes out to Nancy and/or tells her she loves her.

basically what i'm saying is that while ronance was unlikely, it did have a good foundation to Be likely, and it feels massively wasted, and i'm sick of wlw being relegated to supporting characters for cishet ships and getting the most boring lazy love interests known to hollywood if they survive and get one at all. like, fuck, heaven forbid we get a slow burn, well developed wlw ship involving a main character (whose main story for four seasons now has been a revolving, repetitive cishet love triangle like kill me, actually) where both characters get decent amounts of screen time and feature in the plot. my god, if I ever meet the duffers it's on sight and i don't even go here-
