Cetero-

Cetero-: A person who is cetero- can experience attraction to nonbinary people.

Ceterosexual: A person who is ceterosexual can experience sexual attraction to nonbinary people.

Ceteroromantic: A person who is ceteroromantic can experience romantic attraction to nonbinary people.

Cetero- is usually referred to as skolio- but there is a push to change the name of the label because the prefix skolio means bent or crooked which implies that nonbinary people are abnormal or broken. The prefix cetero means other. So not female or male but other.

Can we stop blanketly attacking and demonizing terms that mostly nonbinary people use please??? For example: Androsexual/romantic and gynosexual/romantic. These terms were originally made so people could have terms for their orientation that didn’t assign or assume a gender to the user. For a nb person gay and especially lesbian have gendered connotations on the user. But androsexual/gynosexual get across the type of person someone is attracted to without labeling them a gender. Gay typically implies a masculine person or a man and lesbian assumes a woman. But nb people may not be comfortable with these gendered assumptions connected to those words. Thus andro and gynosexual/romantic. They don’t assign or imply a gender at all. But any time these are mentioned they are instantly labeled transphobic. And yes, some people who identity as such can be transphobic and when someone is actually being transphobic then do call them on it, but that goes for literally any label. And when these terms are primarily used by nbs and created with them in mind its very insulting to automatically label them as transphobic when primarily trans people are the ones who use them. Another term that is often attacked on principle is skolio- but now mostly called cetero due to uncomfortableness with the meaning of the skolio prefix. Ceterosexual/romantic meaning attraction to nbs. Anytime attraction to nbs is mentioned there is constantly people yelling its fetishistic to nonbinary people. This directly leads to the desexualization of nb people. Being attracted to nbs is no different than being attracted to men or women. And the same tired, flawed arguments are always used (Ex: “you can’t tell someone is nb by appearance” but nor can you for men or women. Its thinly veiled transphobia branded as pretending to care about nbs, but that’s a whole other post.) Cetero is almost entirely used by nbs to indicate their attraction to other nbs which is in no way transphobic nor fetishizing. And it is so exhausting to hear it all the time. And binary people are allowed to be attracted to and love nonbinary people as well. Attraction isn’t inherently fetishizing. Stop speaking over nbs on this issue. And this hatred and demonization of nb terminology honestly even extends to queer as an identifier. People dislike queer because it is too vague or too broad. But that is exactly why (some) nonbinary people use it. Because there is not a whole lot of orientation terminology that is nb friendly and as stated, the terminology that is, is often attacked. When nbs try to create our own language to describe ourselves it gets dismissed as silly, dumb, unnecessary, and cringy. When we use binary language we get harassed for not being nb enough. And when we use other terms they are demonized as transphobic even though it is trans people utilizing them. So the long and the short of this post is stop attacking nb terminology. Stop calling trans terminology transphobic. Stop speaking over nonbinary people on nb topics.

Homophobia and ableism strikes again

Honestly, in my work as a therapist, I’m seeing this A Lot, and tbh I still don’t have a satisfactory approach to it. A heavy dose of Existentialist “create your own Purpose” tempered with “when the plane’s going down, put your own oxygen mask on first”, but… yeah, there is no ethical way to work on individual emotional distress without acknowledging the systemic socioeconomic, geopolitical fuckery going on at the moment, and the sheer grief that comes with it.

This is one of those areas where like on the one hand as a chronic moderate-severe depressive this shit hits me hard and on the other I’m watching people technically more mentally healthy than me struggle with the vast pointless mess of existence for the first time and it’s a trip.

Some tips from the inside, in case they help:

- life has always been pointless. Or rather, we have always been unable to control the relative point-fulness of life. The factors involved in opening the possibilities of who can have a large scale impact where are so insanely complex that they can at best only be pieced together imperfectly in retrospect

- the only thing that has changed is your awareness of this fact. No, seriously. The sun will eventually swallow the planet; at any moment without our knowledge or control the sun could flare in weird ways that will kill us all; etc. There was geopolitical and socioeconomic fuckery as bad or worse going on before: you just didn’t see it. Promise.

- you do what you can with what you have. You do what’s in front of you. Humanity has survived all of this before; it may survive it again. It may not. You can only do what you can: take what lessons exist from the past and apply them.

- sometimes it is just that bad and they are totally out to get you. The question is, what do you do about it?

- almost without exception in human history the answer has been “build community; support the one you have; reach out to connect MORE and to make the world more kind and less hateful than before.”

- recognize you’re trying to tackle god-level problems with a brain originally meant for keeping small proto-fish from being eaten. Treat that part of your brain like a very anxious toddler or rescue pitbull. Give it small measurable victories and successes even if you have to make them up. Make sure it’s fed and watered and has enough rest. Medicate it if you have to - there’s nothing wrong with that. The opposite, in fact.

My grandparents grew up or were serving during ww2 then post war rationing, my parents grew up half expecting nuclear war to break out, their peers found out they were going to die of aids in mid adulthood. My friends and I have autoimmune disorders for which they don’t yet have cures, some of us died and are dying sooner than others depending on support and just random luck. It’s felt like the end of the world before and it was rational then as it is now. People will die and others will survive. Control the small things, love like you have only today and like the above says do what you can, doesn’t matter if it’s small cuz you barely can care for yourself. Little things matter. Little you matters. Love you folks and your creations so much.

Alright let me help out then:

1) Most of the cast is female. In fact only two main characters are male.

2) Both male characters take typically non-masculine hobbies. Emerson Cod knits almost non-stop and makes pop-up books. Ned is literally called “The Pie-Maker” because he bakes homestyle pies from his mother’s method. Both are shown to be very nurturing and even maternal characters. Conversely, the women? A pair of professional travelling show performers that have gritty sexual scandals the way men usually get (see the entire “Chuck’s father” storylines), a beekeeper who is the single most positive and optimistic character imaginable, and a former professional jockey- Three of four pro athletes.

3) You could very easily make the claim Ned is asexual.

4) Yes, the storyline is about romance. But it’s also about the positive side of a love story, and their only drama lies in overcoming their inability to actually share contact.

5) A very good friend of mine recommended this show to me as “Disney for adults.” I told her it was already on my list to watch because “It’s by Bryan Fuller, from Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me.” Bryan Fuller is now most known for “Hannibal.” The same camera methods and bright colours and lighting techniques Hannibal is known for? Perfected in this show, just using a different tone- The same colour methods in reverse, upping the vivid greens and yellows instead of reds and blues, which sells emotion both ways.

7) Probably one of the best examples of a modern day fairy tale possible.

8) Narrated by Jim Dale- The narrator for the HP audio books.
