Okay but I love that we end Lover with Taylor saying that love is golden.
Do you know what it takes to make gold? You have to mine ore, which contains small amounts of gold. The ore is crushed into sand and agitated in a tank. When they finally separate out the heavy metals, they have to smelt it at 1600 degrees to get rid of the impurities in the metals. Then you have gold.
Love is the same way. You have to go out and be in the world and find someone to love. Then you go through life with that person. Sometimes you feel crushed; sometimes you’re agitated with each other; you go through things that could destroy you. BUT if you stick it out and continue to love each other through it all, what you have together is golden.
How freaking poetic is that??
I haven’t seen anything about Afterglow yet which is an international travesty. That song is a gem about self-sabotage and forgiveness and knowing you have messed up, but being unable to stop. And knowing you hurt someone you love is the worst feeling. But you can move past it and get stronger and your relationship is that much better because of your mistakes.
This song is literally a deep dive into the line from “you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars”. There is a vulnerability in a relationship where you want someone to “tell me that we’ll be just fine even when I lose my mind”. And if you can get past your insecurities, all the “exes, fights, and flaws we wouldn’t be standing here so tall” and then you know why love was worth it.
This song is so underrated in it’s ability to perfectly capture the tough sides of a relationship
