Rewatching ATLA and found this scene very interesting. You can see that in the episode entitled, “The Water Bending Scroll”, we find Zuko teasing Katara with her necklace that’s a relic passed down to her. As we move toward the end of the first season, in the episode entitled, “The Water Bending Master”, we find that Katara’s water-bending master Pakku had actually got this for Kanna, Katara’s grandma but eventually, they didn’t end up together.

I feel that the writers foreshadowed the relationship dynamics between Zuko and Katara. The necklace itself was traditionally given by the men to those women of the water tribe whom they wanted to marry. So, that’s pretty much clear that the original intention of the writers over here was to make sure that Zuko becomes the one who gets this necklace and teases her with that signifying the nature of their relationship.

As we see that Pakku gets the necklace for Kanna but didn’t get to marry her. Similarly, Zutara were the star-crossed lovers who had hidden feelings somewhere in their hearts even after all the animosity between them. We find this throughout the end of the second season and the final one where Katara tries to cure Zuko’s scar with her miraculous Oasis water and later on Zuko takes up Azula’s lightening on his heart for her. I refuse to believe that it was sole friendship rather both knew that it can get complicated as both had prior sweethearts.

This just breaks my heart to know that they were destined to be together, but still couldn’t make it work. All thanks to the stupid writers who were clearly blind to see the emotional intimacy that was perceived by us all.

it will always be hysterical how people act as if zutara has zero subtext and it’s like any other atla fanon ship when, even discarding the three canon instances of people who aren’t involved with the Gaang believing they are an item and the obvious parallels, these are actual shots that we saw with our eyes:

the writers knew wtf they were doing

in my headcanon zuko understands that he’s in love with katara pretty much immediately after the show ends while katara is the biggest idiot in the world for years. she genuinely thinks they are just big besties and that every pair of friends acts like them (= in love with each other). then one day she goes to visit him in his palace and he half-jokingly kisses her hand and calls her “my lady” and suddenly it clicks and she’s like oh shit. oh shit. oh fuck. she starts making timid advances (not knowing zuko has been pining after her for so long) and it’s his turn to be an idiot because he’s never believed she could love him back and doesn’t want to get his hopes up, so he convinces himself that she’s merely being being extra friendly. she’ll go for a hug and he’ll put his hand in front of him like FUNNY HANDSHAKE INSTEAD? they go on like this forever until someone (probably toph) calls them out on their bullshit.

Zuko: I kissed Katara!

Toph: Whoa…

Toph: I owe June so much money.

I saw someone say that Omashu = Kataang, just because Kataang kisses in the cave episode... Oh my god, the lowest level of thinking possible, and it thinks it's smart ! I don't care that Kataang is the cannon, that there were kisses and blushes from Katara. It was badly written. And yes, sorry but Omashu very clearly parallels Zutara. Not Kataang. My god, they are the same even in the plan and color codes ! Denial can be strong for some, unbelievable...

Also, this delusion that Katara touching zuko's scar is purely medical or compassionate, limits something family or fraternal... Er... What universe do you live in ?! Especially with music ?! It is a moment of understanding and above all of intimacy ! Seriously... imagine Sokka instead of Zuko in this scene to realize how stupid this reflection is... There is nothing sibling in this scene !

Katara: Ugh! I wanna kill that council advisor

Zuko: * pulls out a 📜

Zuko: bending,knife,sword,exile, with a chair-

Katara: A CHAI-
