Pardon My Fish

@pardonmyfish / pardonmyfish.tumblr.com

I'm 21, F, and from Eugene, OR. I've been keeping fish for nearly three years, and currently have three bettas, (Eros the rescue, Ciel, a beautiful delta tail, and Caeli, a female)! I also have a rescued leopard gecko named Aloe, and a border collie mix named Socorro. Also living in my house, though not mine, are three ranchu goldfish, two with no eyes and one with only one eye. My big 10 inch goldfish Bitimen moved into his pond in February 2015, the platies were rehomed to a larger tank, and Ruby the crayfish, Nox, Lumos and Sano the bettas, and Rose, Octavian and Louis swam over the rainbow bridge.

Tried to take the dog for a walk tonight and less than two blocks from my house I came down wrong on my bad ankle again and sprained it again. Not as bad as the first time but worse than the second time. I keep thinking it’s healed and I’ll be able to start running again and something like this will happen.

I just walked past a girl saying “my brother is the size of a full grown standard weiner dog.”

I wanted you to know.

Good god why is having a body so hard

There’s so many things you have to do and who on gods green earth had the time and energy for all of them

Like yeah I worked out tonight but I also got 4 hours of sleep and ate ice cream for dinner

And maybe tomorrow I’ll eat my vegitables but I probably won’t have the energy to work out if I cook

And I’ll basically never manage 8 hours of sleep

And yeah I brushed my teeth with the electric toothbrush but I don’t have it in me to wash my face

Who has the time and energy for all this?? Plus nine hours of work, making sure my dog is properly stimulated, my house is clean, my chores are all done, the bills are paid, I socialized adequately to maintain friendships and mental health, I had enough down time to de stress...

How does anyone manage this

For a dog, is 1 year and 9 months pretty young to get a fatty tumor? Cora has a lump about the size of a quarter on her back, it doesn't seem to be painful and moves around willingly. Noticed it about three days ago. Not sure what it is, but I think we're going to have to go to the vet over it.

Suggest me dogs

The hurricane is across the country from me but it made me realize I maybe don't want more dog than I can carry in my arms in an emergency. I can barely get my 30lb border collie with one arm. Suggest me <30lb dog breeds for my other arm who like hiking, jogging and maybe playing ball, are friendly with strangers, and that you personally think are the best ever. Bonus points for less grooming needs, extra bonus points for silky hair like spaniels and long-haired border collies have. Dream dog is a springer spaniel but i'm thinking I should go smaller.

To the anon that sent the violent and aggressive ask I won't be posting:

I hope you get some help. Good luck lovely.

Life update

So I got an email that this blog has just turned three, and I'd like to share an update on my life 3 years in because this blog has been largely abandoned as it is a bit defunct, and I only occasionally use my dog blog @calling-for-socorro, so there's really been no news about us. In terms of small critter pets I am down to a single male betta. All other critters, including my leopard gecko, Aloe, have passed of natural causes. This was an intentional effort on my part to time the ages of my fish with the approximate time I would be graduating from college, and Aloe simply had good timing herself as she was very old and had a very difficult life before I adopted her. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in June and have been hired at my university in a permanent role. I also signed a lease on a new rental. My whole life is changing! Cora, my dog, seems to have recovered from her health scare. An informal kidney ultrasound did reveal kidney issues of some sort or another but as the obvious health effects ceased for now, vet efforts are on hold because of money and the obvious stress going to the vet constantly causes her. Before she's spayed we'll take another look just to be sure all is well. Cor has matured a lot in the last six months and is a terrific dog. She's going to be transitioned to being lose while I'm at work, with the end game being total access to the house and yard via a dog door, so that my new work schedule isn't as demanding on her. In the meantime, my housemate whom she adores will be home with her a lot and she's going to love that. This is a time of transition for us, and the opening of a new chapter of our lives. It's a time for making goals and plans, and a time for buckling down and investing the energy and work to achieving them. I will probably always lurk on Tumblr and as this is my main blog it won't go away, but my time of keeping small pets is currently over as I don't have the energy to invest sincerely in anything except my dog. If you'd like to keep seeing Cora and I, I will be slightly more active at my dog blog tagged above but probably not by much.

Can someone explain cat allergies to me

If you’re allergic to cats but still like cats…

Do long haired or short haired cats make your allergies worse?

If the cat is brushed out regularly does that help keep your allergies down?

If the cat lives in one part of the house and doesn’t usually go in another part, for example isn’t allowed in one room, will that separation of space help to keep allergies down?

Effectively what’s happening is my housemate is allergic to cats but we have been loosely discussing the idea of getting one and I am not allergic to cats and have no idea how it works.

Thank

I have had cats all my life, absolutely love them, and have pretty severe cat allergies. I have atypical symptoms too, so for me an allergic reaction is a massive sinus headache that becomes debilitating to the point I can’t be upright, general weakness, and nonstop vomiting for 6 - 12 hours. This happens to me at least once a month. (Though to be fair, I’m usually actually set off by other allergens, but they might not hit me as hard if I didn’t have the constant drain on my immune system from the cats.)

I saw a couple responses to this that had only half of the explanation of what actually sets off allergies? The allergen is in cat saliva, but with cats grooming constantly it pretty much covers their entire body. Cats have very light, fine dander that becomes airborne easily and doesn’t get filtered well (I’ve been told only paper filters are effective), which carries the allergens in the saliva right into our airways. If there is a cat in the house, you are breathing this in.

Things that help are the right air filter, keeping the cats out of the allergic person’s bedroom, and supposedly washing your hands after touching them (which is ridiculous, I don’t do that, but I also can’t resist buring my face in their fur, which will probably kill me one day). I don’t know that brushing would becessarily help much (certainly not if the allergic person is the one doing it) as I’d think that would just stir up more dander into the air. But wiping down or, when possible, bathing cats is supposed to help.

Different cats do seem to set me off differently, but I suspect its a little more individual to both the person and the cat than the internet lets on. I’ve read that dark and longhair cats tend to be worse, but I have a black longhair manx that isn’t nearly as bad as his grey sister. They have very different coats and skin - eveything on her is finer, and she grooms a lot more, so she sets me off more. There are breeds that are supposedly hypoallergenic, but I’ve also heard that they aren’t 100%, or that they aren’t really at all. So I don’t know that I would invest in hunting down some rare breed hoping that it might not be as bad if its not a guarantee, you know?

I am on 2 daily pill medicines, 2 vitamins, and a nasal inhaler/spray (that I never remember to use, but every doctor has always told me are the very best thing you can do for your allergies) all just for my allergies. I also take an over the counter med regularly, and use a NetiPot when my symptoms start to get bad. Oh, and allergy shots. Those have helped a lot.

What I’m saying is that I have to do a LOT to fight off my symptoms, and they still interrupt my life at least once a month. Everyone reacts to things differently, maybe your housemate doesn’t have as severe of allergies as I do. But if they’ve never lived with them, would they know that for sure?

This is a huge commitment for someone with allergies to make. Your housemate needs to really LOVE cats to the point that they would be able to accept the negative effects on their health. They will be living with this 24/7. Living with a cat will definitely give them symptoms, there’s no way to get rid of them entirely. The best you can hope for is managing and minimizing them.

That said, if you guys still want to get a cat, that’s really exciting and great! Because cats are great. But don’t forget to think about the cat too - what happens to them if you try this out and then it turns out your housemate can’t live with having symptoms every day, or that their allergies are worse than they thought? So I would suggest that you look into fostering a cat first, so you can have a chance to try it out and see how they do. And in the mean time, you help save cats by freeing up space in a shelter! :)

Thank you!! This is some great advice- especially the fostering bit. Idk how I didn't think of that.

It’s the protien in the dander that they’re allergic to (I have cat and rabbit allergies myself) . Some species are worse than others. There are hypoallergenic cats. Though not ever 100 percent, it’s a lot better. Rex are usually good, Siamese are good, sphinx (one of the best if bathed regularly ime), Russian blue, bangle, and for some people Serbian are all good. With these I don’t need any allergy meds though if they’re in my face a lot my eyes do get irritated still.

Thanks Jayce!
