I love Soji. We were ROBBED of her. She should've been in all 3 seasons.

LITERALLY she was the protagonist of season 1 and for good reason. I thought her narrative was really impactful and a fresh take on the 'android' concept... S1 of Star Trek: Picard repeatedly asks the audience “what happens when people are treated as things? As instruments? As vanity projects? ” and, for better or worse, it's a theme that is recurring in every storyline, from the Romulan refugees to the xBs to Raffi and Rios' backstories. Soji is the fulcrum of all this, the character that it is literally at center of the story because she embodies so many of those questions. I'll never forget the dialogue in “Broken Pieces” where Soji asks Dr Jurati if she can really see her as a person; I honestly think it's one of the best scenes in all of the more recent shows. Plus, she was such a cool character and Isa Briones really brought her to life in all her complex mixture of naivety and steely determination.

Unfortunately even s1 didn't exactly know what to do with her during the finale and the rest of the show was SO eager to get rid of her that I don't even know what to say about it beyond “it sucks so bad and it's a huge waste”. More than that, I can't believe we got even more anodyne Data content (after they put him to rest in s1!) instead of anything about Soji. I don't hate Data but can you say anything about him that hasn't already been said? Couldn't have we moved on like we were all too briefly promised? Soji brought such a cool perspective on the Trek androids, one that I personally found way more interesting than the old one, and we ended up seeing nothing of it.

Trek Talks 3 happens Saturday, January 13, 2024 beginning at 9:45am PST with the SyFy Sistas Pre-Show Panel!

Star Trek actor John Billingsley together with podcast hosts Bill Smith and Dan Davidson developed a streaming telethon for the Hollywood Food Coalition. The all-volunteer team quickly grew, as Roddenberry Podcasts joined Trek Geeks to co-produce the event, and Trek Talks was born. Now in its third year, Trek Talks has become an annual event that provides vital support for the Hollywood Food Coalition and the people it serves. Trek Talks’ guest list reads like an all-star roster of Trek luminaries, as its first two telethons have featured Jeri Ryan, Anson Mount, Scott Bakula, Alexander Siddig, Gates McFadden, Cirroc Lofton, Nana Visitor, Jonathan Frakes, Michael & Denise Okuda, Brent Spiner, Tony Todd, James Cromwell, Terry Farrell, Mike McMahan, Linda Park, Dan & Kevin Hageman, John de Lancie, Armin Shimerman, Brannon Braga, Robert Picardo, Ira Steven Behr, and many, many more.

Listen.

EVERYBODY knows (or should) that you DO. NOT. STOP. in Vidor, Texas.

It’s best to just run out of gas elsewhere. Whatever you do, black folks, DO NOT STOP IN VIDOR, TEXAS.

There’s a good chance you’ll get lynched or just come up missing - and I’m not joking.

also do NOT stop in Harrison, Arkansas!!!! (relatively close to OK and MI) a nazi town with a BIG KKK organization.

My obligatory addition to this every time it crosses my dash, because I know the link is definitely missing ones in my own (northern) state and there are some in this thread not on the above link either - thread by LeVar Burton with a LOT of replies from people naming the sundown towns near them:

I saw a post the other day making a claim that was something to the effect of the Star Trek fandom being the wisest and most drama free because it's the oldest modern fandom or whatever.

And I had to laugh because like....are you talking about the same fandom that, among many other things, was (and is) actively hostile to anyone who prefers AOS over TOS? The fandom that did nothing but bitch about Discovery for years rather than give it a decent try and the benefit of the doubt? That dragged Michael (and Sonequa Martin-Green) for who knows what reasons, every time they had a chance? The fandom that gets up in arms every time the Klingons undergo a design change (which as far as I can tell, happens in almost every new series)? That fandom?

I adore Star Trek. I've made some damn good friends in that fandom and the fans have produced some of my most favorite fanfic and fanart. It's a great community! But PLEASE. Let's not kid ourselves into believing it's a mature and drama free fandom lol. It's got its bad eggs and dark corners just like every other one and to put it on a pedestal and pretend otherwise is to play a dangerous game.

I am literally writing an essay (for which I was COMMISSIONED by an EDITOR and will get PAID) about how Star Trek fandom gives itself far too much credit for being progressive and inclusive, and in fact the regressive voices are loud and unfortunately influential.

I think Emily told us a weird story about growing up that she would, um, she terrorized you, right?

Oh yeah, she came on here and humiliated me, in front of millions of people.

IPhone Users:

The latest update (17.1.1) has something called NameDrop that basically has all your contacts automatically included in AirDrop. That means that any other iphone near yours can scoop up your contacts automatically and will grab contacts from other phones.

If you update to this version, go into your settings and turn this off. I mean, if that's something you WANT just floating out there at all times, you do you, but generally speaking most of Tumblr IME is pretty not cool with their information just being publicly gleanable like that.

Settings > General > Airdrop and select "receiving off" as well as "namedrop off".

^^looks like this. The bringing devices together is what youd want to turn off

Reblogging this because I do not yet have this update installed (I am waiting to see if Apple patches it out), but this is really helpful to have as a visual reference for what to turn off.
