My Anime Winter 2019 ranking

As before, whatever isn’t on this list is probably even shittier than the lowest ranked anime. If not, change my mind! Note: I wanted to put Kakegurui xx on my plate too, but I haven’t finished the first season yet...

My Anime Autumn 2018 ranking

For the first time in a while, I managed to keep up with all of the shows that I put on my plate this season (except Golden Kamuy, Thunderbolt Fantasy and Bananafish because I haven’t watched their first seasons yet). If anything’s not on this list, it means it’s most likely garbage. Feel free to argue with me!

How To Color like an Anime Screenshot

For completionist’s sake, I translated another Japanese coloring guide over on twitter. I’m not uploading the pictures with the text conveniently inserted because the original artist firmly rejects reposts of their works. But it’s another helpful tutorial, so if you happen to be here for this kinda content, you might wanna give it a peek!

Mysteria Academy Rosetta ("Manatta") by Kakage: Coloring Guide

In celebration of his 30.000 follower milestone, Japanese artist Kakage tweeted a step-by-step explanation on how he colored a recently posted picture of his favorite character Rosetta from Granblue Fantasy. By request of a friend, and with Kakage's permission, I’ve translated the steps so they may help other artists who want to learn from his process. The PSD-file with all the individual layers is available for purchase through Kakage's pixiv booth. For more content, visit his twitter or pixiv gallery!

(Edit: I originally posted the pictures from imgur uploads because tumblr tends to fuck up the image quality, but somehow this caused the pictures to not show up in reblogs, so I reupped them directly into tumblr. If the quality turns out bad, you can still check them on imgur)

So I stumbled a video on Niconico about western fans rankings of anime. sm12849669. Ouron High School host club made it to the list, and that seemed to get a bit of a reaction out of them. Have you seen that show, and if so who is your favorite character?

512x386 resoltion video, tiny text and difficult to hear yukkuri voice, takes 25 mins to download, 0 viewer comments 😩 This is why I haven’t been on Nico in months. The video is based on a poll from Animesuki, so I would’ve preferred it if this was a written article too. Or at least a youtube upload in 720p. Also the poll only handles animes from 2006-2009 which is a time when I wasn’t as invested in animes as I am now because distribution was still a bigger issue back then.

I never got into Ouran, but I intended to while I was in Japan back in 2008 because a good friend strongly recommended it. I bought the first volume in Japanese, started reading the first chapter, didn’t like it as much as the other things I was reading at the time, and then put it on the Eternal Backburner. So just from secondary knowledge, I'll say that my favorite character is either Tamaki or Honey-senpai. If there’s no hot babes in a show, as a rule of thumb, you can be sure that my favorite will probably be a blond twink.

Want to see a really good episode of .Batman, the brave and the bold' in Japanese? sm16142142

Always good to hear dubs of American shows (except Steven Universe), the switch between male and female speech worked especially well in Japanese.

But man, it’s been a hisashiburi since last time I’ve used Nico Nico Douga. It loads like cheese and has overall become even less userfriendly than before...

I'm wondering how Japan has been seeing the Trump presidency? How do they translate how he speaks into japanese in the japanese media? Also, whats Japanese news like?

I’ve tried to keep up with US politics throughout my Ultry Busy Period, but I didn’t get the chance to pay as much attention to the Japanese reaction to it.

From what I’ve gathered, Japan is very worried about Trump because he could threaten the current power balance in East Asia. Some polls mention an 84% on the negative side.

I know it's been years since you've done anything MLP related, but do you know what Japan's opinion towards Sunset Shimmer and Equestria Girls in general is?

Avatar

You know it, my dude. I still like the ponies, but I’m so out of the loop with MLP. I haven’t even watched anything after the season that ended with the big DBZ fight. How many new seasons are there now, two? Three??

Anyways, I kinda wanna discourage questions like “what does Japan think about XYZ” because I won’t know the answer without research, which is very tedious and often with disappointing results, and I’m still very busy with my actual master’s thesis. But I’m super close to making that big breakthrough! So maybe remind me again in Febuary.

I’ve already copypasted all the 1600 tweets into a notepad that contain the word サンセットシマー and I’ll translate/compile a bunch of those that reflect the general opinion about her. I think that is the best way to find a satisfying answer, especially now that Nico Nico Douga comments have become a real pain to retrieve.

So uh, do you "use" your hentai manga at all? I have no idea how to ask that without being creepy. Sorry. I just wonder like, if you read it and just keep it in your mind for "later" or...

Nah, everything I've bought is basically just a trophy. I might flip through it once, but then it goes back into the vault. Maybe when my living arrangements change, I'll have the space to display my treasures in a more appropriate way. Then I'll pick em up more often and go "Ahhh, Yuri & Friends '96, such a mature flavor 😙👌". But for now, knowing that I own all these rare lewds gives me enough satisfaction already. And I'm glad that I literally paid tribute to the artists I admire. When I want to party, I grab my materials online. That's also how I decide what I want to buy next time I'm in Japan. Is there even a more convenient way to know what's on the market? But lately nothing's really hitting the spot. You can only look at your favorite artist so often until you get bored of em, yknow. I've tried to commission some artists to get exactly what I want, but I'm actually too self-conscious about what I want, so out of embarrassment I just gave them money and stopped contacting them.Eventually I’ll have to draw my own lewds, but I'm not good enough yet and I currently don't have the time to hone my skills... maybe 2017...

What is that mysterious food the parents eat in Spirited Away?

There’s an official statement, but it’s kinda bullshit. Have it anyway!

Casually translated from Twitter User @0910noncha‘s tweet:

Do you think it's possible to get from zero japanese knowledge to the point where you are able to play the osomatsu otome game when it comes out? I've heard that seinen/josei games contain a lot of kanji...

Avatar

It’s possible that you need a junior high school level, at the very least. I don’t think it would surpass the “intelligence” level as when you’re watching the anime. It’s also possible that the game will come fully voiced, so if your auditory skills are better, you may not have to worry about kanji so much. At this point it’s hard to say, because all my answers are gonna be “maybe!” But it never hurts to learn something from zero.

I’ve been meaning to post something like this for a while, and since some of my friends have recently started studying Japanese, I might as well use this opportunity to hijack your convo.

I have noticed that Japanese classes worldwide usually start with the same approach which makes learning the language much more difficult than it should be. I think what they’re trying to do is build up a beginner’s vocabulary with a basic grasp for how the language works. But this approach ignores the fact that most people who pick up the language aren’t small children and that they already have a vague level of familiarity thanks to anime and manga. Inconsistently enough, they usually start off by telling you to learn the hiragana (and katakana) on your own over the course of a weekend or something, even though they treat you like a baby for everything else.

So here are 4 tips that could help you skip several weeks or even months of community college.

About how big was the furry doujin crowd over there? Is there like a separate section for just Furry Stuff? And how good is Mare Holic and others?

48 tables by my count (monster girls and the likes not included). That’s almost two aisles, or four table rows all for themselves. Almost as much as the otokonoko section even! With the East Hall 1-2-3 having 2,081 tables, that’s 2.3% of that hall. Or 0.85% of all three halls combined on that day.

0.85% of Comiket Day 3 is furries. It’s a small neighborhood...

Mayoineko books are always a mixed bag, and a rather expensive one at that too, so I kinda wasn’t feeling it on the other publications they offered that day. But you can’t really go wrong with the beautiful shape of a horse!! 🐎🐎🐎 Flipping through the sample, I was sold when I saw there was even some dolphin on horse action while an otter dressed as a nurse holds their hands. Nekubila (who basically drew Trixie getting fucked by the Boar God from Princess Mononoke), Nezumin, and Chimosaku should be no stranger to avid poni smut fans either, and they delivered some good stuff. But there were some gorgeous submissions by other artists that I didn’t know before as well. All in all a good purchase.A few more artists besides Rikose and Sindoll caught my eye, but in the end I chose not to spend my money on them. Not even on the bikini babe book with 2 Doxy pages. He tweeted about how he hated not being able to attend Comiket this year, so if that wasn’t him at their table... who was that other foreigner???

Hi, I guess you're not doing the pony comment thing anymore since it's been a while since you updated that. Was hoping you might be able to explain something I keep seeing in Nico comments though there. Specifically long strings of 8's as a comment. As in: "8888888888888" Is it at all similar to the wwww=lol thing?

It’s just a lot of effort to sit down and do the whole thing, especially when real life is being overwhelming, both physically and mentally. But I’ve refound the motivation to polish my Japanese skills some more, so once everything’s settled down again, I should get back into it.Just don’t put too much pressure on me.

At least your questions are easily answered!8 = hachi. Syllables that start with H can also be turned into B or P, so "8″ can also be read as pachi (for example in the name “Shinpachi”). Pachipachi is the onomatopoeia for clapping, so when you see lotsa 888888s, that’s when everyone is applauding.Hachi and pachi aren’t the only ways to read the number 8 by the way, and there is a whole system that lets you read numbers as syllables. It’s kind of like a very well known code language. It’s most commonly used to turn dates of the calendar into funny holidays, like recently Bunny Day on August 21st (8 = ba, 2 = ni, 1 = i) when everybody was drawing bunny girls, or to write out telephone numbers such as 481640 (shinpai muyou = no need to worry) for the hotline in a hair loss prevention commercial, just as you would with stuff like 1-800-CALL-SAUL.“wwww” is a little different because it’s derived from the way computers type in Japanese. The syllables that are just one vowel (a-i-u-e-o) get turned immediately into their kana form. But all the consonants first appear in roman letters until you add the vowel that will form the syllable that you aimed to type. So one way to write acronyms in Japanese is to just write the consonants (ktrk = kita kore = “here it is, the thing”). In ye olden times, people were still forced to write the kanji for laughter in brackets (笑) to demonstrate a hearty chuckle at the end of a sentence. But then they realized they could just press the w-key for as long as the laughter lasted and people would still understand that good times were had. And since a row of wwwwww kinda looks like a line of grass, they coined the phrase “grass is growing” when something funny happens in an online video or on the chans.

What's the most extreme h-manga/doujin you've ever read? Something like Fatalpulse or ShindoL.

Avatar

I don’t really see the appeal of tentacle-based monsters and I could go without the prego and drugz stuff, but otherwise ShindoL and Fatalpulse are my bread and butter. If you’re looking for something similar, I can only think of Amahara Teikoku off the top of my head. But they only deal in Final Fantasy Tactics and don’t have the artistic finesse. Maybe Hana Hook, but they just aim for the ultimate of NTR and bring the mental aspect to the extreme.I consider John K. Pe-ta’s, Nezumin’s and Radiohead’s works far more extreme anyway. Not necessarily in a bad way though!Usually I try to stay away from any real guro or scat, even though some artists like Combat Monmon, Niku Ringo and A-10 slip it in sometimes… that’s when I look out the window into the distance and whisper “why”. That’s also why I don’t really make a mental note of titles and artists that deal in nothing but this. But if you were to show me something EXTRRRREEEME, chances are I’ve already seen it wActually wait, one of THE most extreme things I can remember is Mai-chan’s Daily Life. Definitely not my cup of tea, but I can acknowledge the idea behind it.

6feetfo replied to your post “Comic Market 88 haul”

all this from one comiket?? i'm afraid to ask how much it ran you...

Nah, not everything. The tankobons and 23 of the dojinshis were from Mandarake. Only 52 of the other dojinshis were from Comiket. I’ve spent under ¥20.000 at Mandarake, and a probably around ¥25.000 on Comiket. Which is $160/€145 and $200/€181 respectively. D’you think that’s too much...?Bear in mind that I specifically saved my money for this purpose. This is 7 years of thirst.
