So Reuters posted this article two hours ago about the events that took place yesterday in Al Hoceima and some neighbouring towns like Bokidan. Reuters doesn’t seem to grasp what’s going on. A hotbed of dissident they call the Rif *smh*
The speak of Abd el Krim and call him an oponent of the ruling elite. Which ruling elite? He was an anti colonial hero, yes, but one who got rid of the Spanish occupation and ruled as President of the Rif Republic (albeit for a short while because the colonial powers came back with chemical weapons). Categorising him as being an oponent of de ruling elite is really offensive and deminishes his place in history.
What bewilders me the most is the fact that not even once Reuters manages to report what the protesters are actually protesting for. Yes they mention Mohsin Fikri, but Reuters fails to report that these protests have been going on since October 31 2016. They make it sound like this protest was a one off thing. But it’s actually the opposite. There are days the crowds are big like on Human Rights day or like yesterday with the anniversary of Abd el Krim’s death. Surpringly, Reuters is able to report on the statement of the corrupt police. But they are completely unaware that the protesters are demonstrating with Rif Republic flags and are demanding autonomy, human rights etc etc.
No, Reuters even manages to sprinkle a last line about the “arab sping”…so it can all make sense to the western audience. Who cares right... those Muslims are the same right #sigh
