Through the haze of loathing in her eyes, Vergil could see her comprehending - It was faint but it was there. It was something he’d learned to recognize from her. It would show in her eyes for a brief moment during their conversations where she’d dawn upon a realization or come to an understanding. He would not be commanded nor frightened and she knew this. While she lacked knowledge of the true horrors that lurked on the edges of the world she knew, her mind was one quite intelligent and he found himself only further intrigued. Never before had he seen hints of rage this deep - So strong that it rushed through her veins like blood and trembled her shoulders like the cold of a blizzard.
Their gazes remained locked - Clear skies and stormy seas. Despite the intensity in their eyes, the hostility between them dwindled. The air - so thick with threat - had begun to ease just slightly and whatever wrath she’d reserved for him dissipated; The beast had retracted her claws from his direction. It was clear as day that someone would be receiving those sharpened talons and fierce teeth, yet he had no way of knowing if they would lash given a chance or sought prey of a specific name.
Red curls once again preceded the fiery trail she left as she turned herself away from him and marched toward the exit to the library. Although her hail was now cut short, the blaze she left was brighter and hotter than it had ever been. Heat lingered in the air she passed through, charged with the energy of her raging spirit. By now he was quite familiar with the feel of her energy - Sensing its powerful pulses even as she left his sight and into the crimson streaked city, warmed by the light of the sunset and cooled by the long, sinister shadows.
Image
It seemed that he had no choice but to follow. Human affairs rarely interested him but his curiosity was undeniable. What could possibly tip such a strong spirited and headstrong woman into such a state of outrage? From what little he’d learned of her, she could be quite willful and unconstrained - It wouldn’t surprise him if she had found trouble, or if trouble had found her. Even though they’d shared books and tea, there was still plenty they did not know of each other. Each an enigma; Both of them puzzles with a million possible solutions but only one truth.
Once he’d allowed her several minutes of absence, he moved from his standstill at the librarian’s desk. Vergil pushed through the doors and follow her trail along the london streets. Even at a distance, he could sense her: Val’s energy throbbed like a heartbeat inside his skull. He tracked her, moving like a phantom between rooftops and shadows. For once, keeping up with her would be a simple task - The difficulty of conversation was a catch up game, but this was what his more unique abilities were suited for.

Walking fast through the city, her feet led her towards the all-familiar neighbourhood of Jared’s place, where they usually would meet up before she had to visit the next customer. His tall silhouette could easily be seen, leaning against a concrete wall that fully covered by the spray paint of graffities; a cigarette was between his lips, creating a small cloud of smoke around him with every breath he’d exhale. How careless he seemed, even if he knew he was about to send one of his best girls to get beaten up by this sadistic bastard.

Valeria’s sky blues darkened to the grey of a rainy day and her eyes focused predatorily onto his form. This time, she would make sure neither he or that freak would touch her in a way she did not approve; not anymore. She could feel the cold metal of her swiss knife, hidden inside her boot and there was an itch in her palm---she wanted to grasp it and seathe it in raw flesh once more. She contemplated wether she would actually go and finish off the rich bastard first, and then deal with Jared: it was not an easy choice, you see.

The dark eyes of her pimp easily recognized her small figure, as she was approaching and he was quick to drop the cigarette and stomp on it with his heavy, combat boots. “ A little late, ain’t ya, Val? You have kept Mr. Ryan waiting for you in his car... “ A small gesture towards the shiny, black BMW parked a few feet ahead of them---this sick fuck was impatient enough to come pick her up himself, wasn’t that cute? Her gaze lingered onto the car for a moment, the same question repeating itself all over and over again. Jared’s  judging cold eyes run over her tired, untended form; “ The fuck ya wearing, bitch? Told ya before, ya gotta look good for the customers and you are a bloody eyeshore right now...”

Image

Valeria’s attention returned to the man standing before her; it is you who made me look like this, you motherfucker---she clenched her jaw and tremblingly she sighed, trying to hold back all the anger once more...but once she realized what she was doing, her features were quick to twist into rage. Why do I have to hold it back for you? You----You do nothing but degrade me like this, always, Jared. You used to not let people hurt me, and now look at you; you pathetic asshole would even lick shit to get this sick fuck’s money, and I’m returning beaten and bleeding every time from his place! ”

Her voice was slightly rised as she spoke to him, earning a surprized look from him. She rarely ever talked back like that, always accepting his every command, like a good dog---in fact she had not talked to him like that since the first few months of their cooperation. Insolent little bitch. His eyes narrowed and without a second thought, he grabbed her by her hair and pulled her closer to himself. “ Do you think I give a fuck what a stupid hoe like you thinks? That I care if you come back with your asshole bleeding? You are only good enough for taking dick, which is why you work for me, if I am not mistaken---so now get your dumb ass into this car before I drag you there myself.”

The pain she felt was quite magnified over the fact she barely had any strength left in her, after so much time of sleeplessness and intoxication---yet everything within her told her to fight; to grab the knife, to slit his throat this very moment. Her features were twisting in pain, yet she was trying to reach down into her boot, desperately so---impossible as it was, she found solace into sharply punching up right onto his jaw. The uppercut was not delivered with her full force, but it was enough to make him let go of her and take a step back, allowing Val to collect herself and take her knife out.

With Jared holding onto his chin and growling for a little bit, she took a few steps back herself, for her own safety. Even so, this was not going to be enough for the enraged pimp, who, as soon as he felt his clarity returning, was fast to approach her again and this time punch a hook right onto her exposed cheekbone, cutting her gentle skin some at the impact. Val dropped down on the pavement, hitting her head against the concrete, a little whine of pain leaving through her chapped lips. Disoriented and with her cosciousness barely staying with her, she cursed under her breath. She had such fire inside her, wanting to get up and fight back and kill him, yet her body was giving up on her---giving up after all the alcohol and abuse. Pathetic... She felt pathetic as she tried her best to look up towards him again, yet her eyelids were too heavy.

She could only see the glimmer of his golden rings approaching, reflecting the light of a street lamp that had just turned on, seeing that the light of the sun had vanished from the sky, leaving behind this obscure twilight.

As soon as he approached, Val’s body seemed to knot into a single twisting tangle of stress. It wasn’t something easily hidden and certainly not in any way subtle. To say this was out of the ordinary for her would be an understatement. Although she was sometimes somewhat absent or lower energy than her usual, she’d never seemed outright hostile to his presence. In fact, it was often she who approached him when his own mind lead him elsewhere or he’d been too attentive to his reading to notice her. Narrowed eyes - Cold and detached as ice floes of the arctic - watched her retrieve her change and hastily return it to her pocket; It took none of his brilliance to understand that the movements were anxious. Deeply vexed.
Any and all pleasure she normally experienced upon finding him was long gone from the phantom of the woman who stood before him now. If the Val he knew was the nymph who danced in the rain and bathed in the sun, this was a being opposite: Withdrawn away in dry corners and seething in her shadow from between sharpened teeth. Yet here she stood wholly human. There was nothing from her which radiated an energy of a demon in guise or possession. It seemed whatever this rage was, it was an earthly one. He suppressed a disappointed tisking - Unholy rage he could handle, the human kind was one he found much trickier. Fickle and complex - Contradictory.
Wrath seeped into the azure of her eyes. Their gazes connected - both with an unshakable intensity - and the ocean behind her glance was dangerous. The waves tossed and sent a salty spray into the air, thinning just enough to reveal the clicking teeth and coiling tentacles straining from the depths. Any mere mortal’s venture into those shallows would be their last - Snatching their prey, they were dragged kicking and screaming below where light could penetrate. Val backed away from him, her fingers curling into fists so tight her knuckles paled. As much as her ire perplexed and caught his interest, he did not fear her - Her fury could not harm him. Vergil ran the tip of his tongue over his canines before parting his lips to speak. His tone was calm but cautionary.
† — “ You think me a dog you can order away? You know me better than that by now. You may ignore me, but you may not order me. “
The librarian across the desk seemed torn, but so far seemed unwilling to involve himself. Whether or not he may do so later, he didn’t know, but the old man and his actions were none of his concern. His focus was solely on the tempestuous spirit before him now, twitching and writhing with apoplectic energy. Whether she challenged him or simply turned on her heel and left him, he would not be the one to retreat - He did not bow or break to anyone or anything. Just as her will was hers, his will was his own.

She knew very well that she could neither scare or order him around; she couldn’t make him leave her alone, withdraw his eyes from her so that he wouldn’t look at how disgusted she was with herself at this point. She had let things get this bad---she had let herself fall so low, to lose her beauty she was so proud in. Good God, it was times like this that her deeply rooted self loathing would wrap around her like vines and choke the air out of her lungs. There was so much rage and hatred boiling inside of her, twisting like coiling snakes inside of her body, her mind...everywhere.

Image

With her fine features twisting, eyebrows knit, she took yet another step back. At this point, she was trembling whole, the mixture of stress, tension, anger and disappointment just bringing her to her emotional limits---she wanted to cry so much right now and just scream and make a mess, break stuff, let the beast she hid inside her soul loose. But it was solely her respect and adoration towards him---the only thing that kept her behaved and silent right now, glaring still right into his eyes without breaking the contact for a single second.

For some, locking eyes for so long would have been considered either erotic or maniac---but it was rather a stabilizing factor for her; reminding her at all times that this was a man she truly respected; this was someone she didn’t want to disappoint any further. And thus, she decided what she was going to do. She did not spend a second’s glance to her favorite librarian this time, completely unapologetic over the noise this may have created, or the tension between them, once more.

A turn on her heels and she was quick to walk away from the man clad in blue, her steps quick yet decisive as she went down the stairs to the ground floor and left the library in a rush, speedwalking towards the location she had arranged to meet up with Jared tonight. The sun had already begun to hide behind the horizon, painting the sky in the same colour of her hair: hellfire. Every passing minute, the light was growing less and less, both in the vastness of the sky and the depths of her mind

That wild thing she hid from people’s eyes--her alter ego--it was      almost present now, yearning to feast on raw meat and bathe in blood...

Days passed – weeks even – and he’d found himself on multiple occasions almost losing track of time. When the complex duality of his life on London’s streets weighed on him, he would find an unusual comfort in simplicity. Often he would seek the company of books from the library, art from the gallery, exhibits from museums… Yet lately, he’d found himself in a situation that was becoming alarmingly familiar: Across the table from a human woman with copper curls and a sapphire gaze. He estimated that half of his visits to the library ended resulted in a meeting with Val that more often than not ended at that same cafe.
Sometimes she would be absent and at times it was he who decided not to show. There were times he opted to address business elsewhere or stay at the flat he resided in, the previous resident having kindly donated it in its entirety to him. Well, not exactly a donation - Dead men don’t give freely nor reluctantly - but it seemed as long as there was money paid at the end of the month in their name, no one asked any questions and he could enjoy solitude. He did his homework thoroughly beforehand, after all - For this particular individual, no one would come knocking.
When he decided to stay in the flat, it was more often than not to allow himself blissful isolation: He sealed himself away from the busy streets, crowded sidewalks, and the gall of man. Wounds would discourage him from showing on other days. The evening would be spent ridding his body of foreign items - bullets, teeth, and claws - and washing blood, dirt, and sweat from his body, clothes, and blade. Rarely more than a day was needed for him to regain his strength and energy and the following day or the next he would pay a visit to the library.
Recently those visits had been becoming fewer and far between; Other afternoons he would normally visit the library, he instead used to track demons in human guide or investigate locations in the city. Val’s appearances were scarce these days after all and he tended to stay until close simply for the sake of the tranquility he found amongst the rows of books. Distracted is how he would describe her most recently but he never commented, it was her own business after all. Their conversations would be as philosophical and insightful as usual but he could tell that although her gaze remained fixated on him, her mind’s eye searched and wandered somewhere far beyond where his own could see - thoughts, assessments, and troubles. Still, he would say nothing. She had her affairs and he had his.

Sitting in the usual corner of the reading area, he’d become absorbed in the writings of yet another literary work. It was not a day he would normally be there but he figured it was as good a day as any to finish the text he had started previously. He’d already been reading for about an hour when his eyes scanned over the last line of the final page, a familiar shock of red hair catching his attention of the brim of the back cover. The first observation he made was on the curls of her hair, fire spilling down to her neck and then stopping abruptly - No longer did the waves of scarlet cascade over her shoulders and down her back. The second observation was how they swayed for a brief second, betraying the quick turn of her head away from him. Shoulders no longer covered by her hair, he could see them held high with tension. Cold blue eyes narrowed at her back and he audibly snapped the book shut with one hand. With his long and graceful stride, it took him little time to cross to the librarian desk and come to a stop beside her, slipping the title onto the cart to be returned to its place on the shelves.
          † — “ Not quick enough, I’m afraid. ”
The words were spoken in a knowing, clipped tone. He had detected the scent of alcohol and cigarettes from across the room but hadn’t anticipated their source. Val normally was quite put together - Well dressed and clean. This - however - was quite anomalous. The odious scent she carried now stung his nose and his lips curled into a deep frown. It was only through effort that he kept his brow from furrowing in a clear sign of disapproval.

Upon hearing the sound of pages slamming closed, she knew he was up and coming her way already; fuck, fuck, fuCK, FUCK!! Not for a single second could things go her way once! It was frustrating and pushing against the little control over her sanity she had as of lately, almost snapping them completely. She didn’t want to see him right now, she did not want to talk to him, nor explain anything. On the other hand, she knew he was never the type to invade other people’s privacy and become nosy---yet Val in her current condition could only earn questions and disapproving glances.

His familiar and clear voice, which usually was enough to soothe the storm in her mind, right now, with that tone, only made things worse; a trembling sigh left from between her lips, as she was doing her best to keep it together before him, at least. With her whole body tense and her patience running low, she spoke not as she picked up the change and put it in her mostly empty wallet, shoving it nervously back in her jacket’s inner pocket.

She could imagine---feel his burning gaze upon her, full of disapproval and disgust towards her broken image. Where she had been beautiful and aetherial in his eyes, it was all now replaced by this ominous and vile cloud that smelled of blood, smoke and vomit. And the longer her mind made images and concepts of how suddenly, she had lost all her appeal towards this man she was so interested into, just---

That’s it; she was d o n e. Done holding it back, done being patient,      done waiting for a better treatment, done with it all

Her curls lightly swayed as she turned her head in his direction, her eyes shooting him a glare he had never seen before in those pools of azure. As if the skies they reflected were filled with grey clouds, her look was dark and hateful; there was murder written all over that face, anger and exhaustion under her eyes...

              “ Leave... ”

With a voice hoarsher now, because of the large amout of cigarettes smoked in a single day, plus a tone of true rage, she took a step back and away from him, clenching her fists tightly---hard enough, for her knuckles to turn white.

Tired; she was tired, exhausted---just; this whole month sucked ass and she could do so little about this. Looking back to April, it seemed that things were getting better, but no such luck for the wicked. At least, not for her. The dark circles under her eyes and the uneven haircut she had delivered to her beautiful, long hair just came to apply emphasis, that she indeed had hit quite the low once more. Hell, she smelled like tobacco and vodka---like some sort of homeless, that clung to their addiction, as the last taste of pleasure in their life.

April now, seemed a distant dream of springtime; she had met Vergil then, they had started going out for tea sometimes, at the usual silent cafe she had first taken him, for countless of interesting conversations, most of the time uninterrupted by duty callings. Generally, she had grown quite fond of his presence in her life, adding a little spice in the monotony of her week. They met at the library too, as if they were having reading-dates. But it just...came to gradually stop after some time.

From showing less and less up to their meetings, to completely disappearing for some time, Valeria had been buried in mudwater that was always stagnant in workplaces like hers; that rich guy, he had become a usual, even though he was beyond abusive with her, crossing even the line of acceptable sadism she could tolerate. It was all starting to remind her too much of her teenage years...But Jared did not give two shits about his whore’s feelings, of course. The guy was paying a ridiculous amount of money for Valeria in specific, and that’s where the discussion always ended up when she tried to talk to Jared.

Just having to endure this was pathetic; many times she had thought of disposing both him and the abusive customer and simply be done with it, but she soon ended up in the conclusion that she would not find a new pimp that easily. It was just a situation she couldn’t really wiggle out of and it had its toll on her mental state. Internally, she felt bad that she had abandoned her peaceful lifestyle; dressing up beautifully every day and going for coffee regularly and catching Vergil at the library on Thursdays and weekends as well...It was not rare to catch herself wondering, what this lonesome soul was doing.

On the other hand, it was better that he wouldn’t see her in the state she was; she did not want him to see the mess of a person she could actually be. Maybe she had begun to like this man a bit, thus giving the best impression every time, mattered to her. Hopefully, he wouldn’t be here, in the library, today, on a Monday afternoon. There were books she had borrowed almost a month ago that she had to return, even with delay, plus pay the penalty for it. Climbing to the second floor, as per the usual, she greeted her favorite librarian, who was sat behind his desk.

The old man seemed surprized to see that she had changed so drastically, yet made no comment on it whatsoever, simply taking the small stack of books she had placed before him. They all were books on plants and crystals, useful for her wicca studies---yet another thing she had not done in a while. Twisting her torso lightly, so that she could reach her postman style leather bag and take her wallet out, her dulled eyes caught onto a familiar set of colours in the distance: silverwhite, blue and golden. It definitely was him; she did not even need to take a better look.

Her jaw clenched, hands as well, as she took the money she had to pay out of the wallet and quickly set it on the desk, for the librarian to take. Hurry up, faster---she wanted to leave this place before getting noticed by his icy, blue eyes...
