Secret Empire #10, a rundown:

As I explained last week, nazi!Steve had all but one cosmic cube fragment, which he used to beat the heroes and reimage the world in hydra’s image…

Fortunately there was still one cosmic cube piece left, which Sam turned over willingly to nazi!Steve, but what nazi!Steve didn’t know is that Ant-Man and Bucky ‘rode’ in on that last fragment all miniaturized so when nazi!Steve tried to add the last fragment to the cube, Bucky was able to go to the Vanishing point and grab real!Steve and Kobik and bring them back with him…

And then, as I posted here, real!Steve comes back and kicks nazi!Steve’s ass.

BTW: It is established that the ‘history’ of Axis losing the war then using the cube to change history and that Steve had really been a Hydra sleeper was a false implant to convince nazi!Steve that he was the real Steve and give him confidence to do what he did and to lift Mjolnir. Madam Hydra was using a cosmic cube fragment to alter things to keep convincing nazi!Steve that he was in the right about things. History was never altered by the Axis powers.

So no, Steve was never a sleeper Hydra agent during WW2. 

Steve Rogers, our Steve, the real one, was sent to the Vanishing Point, aka Kobik-the-cosmic-cube’s memory, where he existed without memory of who he was for the year that nazi!Steve reigned terror down on everyone back in reality. Nazi!Steve was a cosmic cube construct whom Kobik invented because she, a child with a child’s mentality, had been indoctrinated by Red Skull in Pleasant Hill and he had put her up to it.

@yellowhalcyon  - Kobik didn’t erase everything, no. Unfortunately…

Kobik restored the true history, aka the 616 as we know it, but unfortunately left the death and carnage of the past year as a ‘reminder’ (*grumps* aka a reason to make real!Steve suffer, going forward, for crimes he didn’t commit and wasn’t even there to witness). 

@portraitoftheoddity - I’m actually super confused about that because SE made it seems like no, they left her dead, but she’s set to appear in Legacy? So I think maybe they’re going to bring her back somehow. There’s supposed to be a standalone issue called Secret Empire Omega released next month that cleans everything up so maybe they’re saving her return for that.

Ugh, I’m glad that this BS storyline is finally over/coming to a close, but ultimately, like the destruction left in the wake in this universe, this storyline did a shit ton of damage to Cap’s reputation (and Marvel comics) in the real world as well. Spencer antagonized fans, outright lied and fucking fed on the hate and real hurt that people experienced seeing a figure like Cap polluted to be used as Real-world NeoNazi symbols, disgraced the character’s intention as a symbol of hope and what America SHOULD stand for even when it doesn’t, and doing the right thing even when it’s the hard thing. In the current political climate, we needed an uncorrupted figure like Cap. But he had this “great story” he needed to tell. This? really? This convoluted shitshow was worth it? No. Even with the restoration of the original cap, the damage is still done - just like the ripples in the real world. This fucking metaphor - that even if you change him in current storylines, the originals will always be there crap? Grats, you’ve written Kobik as your fucking mouthpiece. *sarcastic clapping* Now GTFO, Spencer.

they’re beautiful and poetic and tragic and heart-wrenching and brave. i highly suggest going and reading the excerpts.
