going to cut down on my tumblr usage because I'm going to make this coding bootcamp my idle animation at the computer as much as I have the energy to. I'll still get messages and stuff but I won't see as much of my dash (especially not promptly)

she be like “aw tysm” and I be like “who told you? anyway, this is why the order hymenoptera (bees/wasps/ants) likely has more species compared to the order coleoptera (beetles) despite decades of us thinking beetles had the most for the past decades if not hundreds of years…”

Tags from @fagromyzidae I thought were notable! Hope you don't mind the screenshot-

It's truly fascinating, especially with the order experiencing heavy restructuring recently. As some of you may know from my review, I read Wasps Of The World recently, and it's extremely interesting how many sections within that book describe particular families as having been elevated in rank due to a recent genetic analysis of Chalcidoidea, to the point of having to put together a list of 26 newly classified families that were classified during the writing of the book.

We're seeing species, genera, subfamilies, and families springing up all over the place and I do not think we're going to be done classifying wasps any time soon

this is what i was just posting about, and it's not just that he was denied entry: he was meant to speak at the Palästina Kongress, a congress that was supposed to be held this weekend in Berlin. they not only denied him entry into Germany at Berlin airport, but also informed him that he would not be allowed to join the congress via zoom or even send a recording of his lecture.

at the same time, German police stormed the stage at the congress and eventually shut it down completely. according to the organizers, there were about 2,500 cops present (for an event with 250 attendees). several people have been arrested, including a guy who did nothing other than hold a sign saying "Jews against genocide".

the organizers have called for international solidarity in the form of protests in front of German embassies and institutions on Sunday, April 14th:

let your local orgs know about this!

you can also look at their instagram page @ palaestinakongress for info on how everything went down and the repression from police

I’m pretty sure that as far as “infuriating helmets you’d hate to see before you get stabbed” go, this one is definitely up there

Up there, yes, but is it really quite all the way at the top?

the reason we wont budge on "TMA/TME" is because it doesnt matter if the language is imperfect: any terminology tgirls et al (<- this is my new favorite btw) create to describe our experiences will be inevitably dismantled and expanded into a general-use term by the wider trans community as, of course, all previous examples have been too.

like yes of course in the most literal sense everybody is "affected" by transmisogyny in the same way that everybody is "affected" by all misogyny, or for that matter, everybody is "affected" by racism; the whole point is to describe what relationship specific groups have to institutional transmisogyny. nobody is saying people never (incorrectly) clock you as a trans woman and be mean about it, we're saying that there is nothing we can do to "exempt" ourselves from that type of violence; no ID, no birth certificate, no karyotype that will exempt us from institutional transmisogyny. it is literally fucking insane that people will understand this about any other type of institutional oppression & its relationship to gender -- seemingly, only in the trans community are we expected to believe men and women are on an equal footing.

The trick is to ask these people "okay, what terminology would you rather we use?". I've never got an actual suggestion, just the assertion that trans women do not have a unique relationship to transmisogyny that deserves any sort of language. Because that's the real problem to them, the recognition that they have privilege over trans women and benefit from transmisogyny, not the nuances of TME/TMA.

lol. lmao, even.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I don’t think I’ve ever once seen a single instance where someone who sincerely and seriously uses the word ‘mansplain’ has ever been correct.

theology major, looking at atheism: I’m getting a lot of theology vibes from this

Look, atheism is a faith based position in the idea that there is definitely not a God. Or at least, that there isn’t a God under a certain definition of “God.” That is just not a thing we currently can prove with 10/01/2023 scientific knowledge, so taking either of the positions “There is a God” or “There is no God” means you have have to be arguing from faith at a certain point.

The non-faith-based theological position on the existence of a God that you are looking for is agnosticism.

That doesn’t even get into the various ways you can define God, and what being an atheist or an agnostic means in the context of a culture where the dominant religion is polytheistic or animist, or how someone can be an avowed atheist or agnostic and still be a practicing Reform Jew or Unitarian Universalist in good standing!

^ what no good epistemology does to a mf

People say that Internet New Atheism was too loud and strident, but part of me wants to claim it clearly wasn't enough, because I still see posts like this constantly. "In the absence of strong evidence either way, you must treat existence and non-existence as equally plausible, and not doing that indicates proof of 'faith'." <- what? why are you still doing this? Like c'mon man, this is Russell's Teapot, this is Atheism 101 stuff. In the absence of strong evidence either way, non-existence is by far the more sound position to take, and for everything else in your life, it's the position you do take, which then gets selectively ignored, without justification, for God.

The really makes me more sympathetic to those "feminism 101" posts and bingo boards that made the early-to-mid-2010s Internet such a godawful place. I get where they were coming from.

"in the absence of strong evidence either way, non-existence is by far the more sound position to take" what are you fucking talking about dude. Atheism is a faith. It is not more plausible to say you know there isn't a god than it is to say you know there is. Toss in the reactionary anti-feminist bullshit and this post is such a fucking mess.

somehow people always act like it's faith-based to not believe in the existence of god, and yet they don't think it's faith-based to believe there isn't a supernatural entity in their house that will eternally torture them if they leave annoying comments on my posts. really makes you think.
