Timeout with Barthelemy Chalvet

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

I’m Barthelemy Chalvet, a French webdesigner based in Paris. I’m founder of AgenceMe and lead designer at Xola.com. AgenceMe is a small agency created 3 years ago and it’s composed of three people, Marine/Designer, Florent/Front Developer, and I. I also created two companies with my awesome team CodeNgo: Sponseasy.com (a sponsorhip deck builder) and Clapp (a new way to create and join short story movies with your friends or even total strangers. )

What are you working on?

Currently I’m working on new tools and themes for Wordpress software. For a few months we've stayed focused on improving our theme and I can say, it was challenging. Since the theme is launching, we're working on new amazing plugins for this theme, I can just say it will be really cool to use. It was fun to create many different layouts and styles with the same software, it’s incredible all you can do.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Tell us why it's a favorite.

Gravedona

I choose this shot because it’s one of my most recent works. I’m fascinated by how it’s easy to build this page without any skills of development and design. Anyone can create something in few minutes. I also love to create animated shot for Dribbble, I think it’s easier for developers and other people to understand my design toughts.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

I use differents tools and software to create my Dribbble shots, and for our clients. First, I create many, many different versions of the UX design. I love this first step of work, it’s so creative. Once it’s approved by the client, I like to use the Slicy app to cut all icons and images in Retina in few seconds. Then I animate everything with After Effects.

Choose a favorite shot from another player. Tell us why you dig it.

Dhaka, Bangladesh, September 27

From organizer Nuruzzaman Sheikh: "We wanted to arrange a friendly Dribbble Meetup so we could spend some time together, share some working experiences, our backgrounds and journey in this fabulous field: Designing. And we really spent a good and warming 3 hours together, having some Chinese dishes at one of the interesting auto-rotating restaurants in town. We've a relatively small amount of Dribbblers and many of them lives outside of the capital. One of the designers attended the meetup from outside the capital and he sacrificed two days of time for the meetup. In short it was really a fun meetup and all of us agreed to arrange something like this in more bigger way in the coming year."

Many thanks to Nuruzzaman and his fellow organizers Tanveer Junayed and Abdus Salam, as well as everyone who attended. Extra-special thanks to Abdus, who traveled one day each way to get to/from the meetup. We appreciate the dedication!

Timeout with Victor Erixon

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

I’m Victor Erixon, and I’ve been designing for two years now. I currently work remotely for Articulate. I occasionally freelance for clients on the side of that.

What are you working on?

I’m currently working together with my colleagues on updating our entire brand and all of our products. And as I’m the only UI designer, that’s something keeping me very busy at the moment.

On the side of that I’m working for a company that is going to challenge Twitch in the video platform and community for gamers field.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Tell us why it's a favorite.

That’s a tricky one, I’m always loving the end product I’ve worked on. But I’ve this weird thing where I start to hate it after two weeks and I try to come up with something even better.

But my favorite has to be the Apple OS X redesign I did a few months ago. Not because it’s a solid redesign, but because of the eight-page discussion thread about it - most of the comments having an angry tone. I felt like I at least got people to care and talk about it. Even Khoi Vinh tweeted about it!

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

I’m very simple when it comes to my setup. I see most designers having pretty decorated offices with multiple monitors. As I’m traveling much with my current job, I just need my 15” MacBook Retina and my Bose noise cancelling headphones. I normally work at home, in my office, at a café and even out in nature.

Choose a favorite shot from another player. Tell us why you dig it.

Timeout with Ian Ehlert

Timeouts are lightning-quick interviews, five questions to help you get to know the players holding court at Dribbble. Today we meet the newest member of the Dribbble team, Ian Ehlert. Thanks, Ian!

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

I'm Ian Ehlert and I'm Dribbble's newest hire, working in development. I'm happy to say that my current location is sunny Davis, California! I just recently moved here from chilly Minneapolis, Minnesota mostly because I couldn't take another winter, but also in part because my girlfriend is going to grad school here. I'm thrilled to live here now because it rarely even gets below freezing and Davis's city motto is "Most bicycle friendly town in the world."

My one concern in moving to Davis was that I wouldn't be able to find any ultimate frisbee to play. Ya, ya, make your hippie jokes (Patrick) and say "it isn't a sport", but until you've tried it you have no idea how awesome it really is!

What are you working on?

I'm currently trying to finish up development on a project that I think of as "Buy this thing!" It's been a decent project to help me build up familiarity with the Dribbble platform, and working closely with Dan and Rich is a very rewarding experience (Rich did you catch that pun? Rich + rewarding ... I'll try to do better.). I have to say, the Dribbble codebase is quite pleasant to work with. There are parts that show its age, but the other developers really are top-notch and have kept it well groomed over the years. Props to Tristan and Patrick.

Tell us about your setup.

I'm currently rocking a 13" Macbook Pro. I haven't been using any peripherals since I started this job, and I'm actually enjoying it more. It's nice to be mobile when working remotely, so I can move around the apartment and outside to maximize my comfort. I do have a simple desk that I use the majority of the time on the second floor of my apartment that overlooks a farm field (and yet I'm still only a mile from a Trader Joe's).

As for software, I'm using Sublime Text 3 for my editor, iTerm2 for my terminal, Flint for chatting with my co-Dribbblers, and generally Chrome as my browser. I have a pen and notepad nearby that I write on once a week tops. It's gotten to the point where my handwriting is so bad that I don't even want to bother anymore and it just snowballs from there.

Choose a favorite shot from another player. Tell us why you dig it.

Globe by Dave Whyte

My first real project here at Dribbble was to add thumbnails to image attachments on screenshots. In doing so, I needed to test out uploading a lot of different types of images. For brevity, and to get used to the platform, I just found other people's shots and used those. Thumbnails for animated GIFs were giving me a bit of trouble and so I ended up searching for and uploading a number of those. When I searched for popular animated GIFs, Dave Whyte's work kept showing up.

I've always had a love for animated GIFs. I think it stems back to the days of Geocities and AngelFire when you'd throw some awesome flames animated GIFs on your website to make it cool.

We threw up this awesome flame animated GIF to make our website cool.

Anyway to cut a long story short (but still probably too long), I really enjoyed Dave's work in particular. There's something about a simplistic, perfectly-looped gif that just gets to me.

(Ed. Note: Thank you, Ian, for giving me the opportunity to point our readers to last week's Moonlighting, featuring the amazing Dave.)

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is an occasional series about designers who spend a significant amount of professional time not designing. Fit the bill? Email susanna@dribbble.com.

Dave Whyte: Physicist by Day, Designer by Night

This was supposed to be a Timeout with motion graphics designer Dave Whyte, creator of GIFs that mesmerize and astound. But when we discovered the amazing Dave also toils as a physics student, we decided to (nicely) shove him into the Moonlighting box, instead.

Dave first came to motion design as an undergraduate examining computational models. Now a PhD candidate at Trinity College in Dublin, Dave explores the tactile; specifically, foam. Come downtime, Dave's back to virtual reality, creating twirling, waving digital images. His art and his willingness to share his processes have people thumbs-upping all over the internet.

Below, Dave discusses points where his two interests meet as well as his process on Circle wave.

(Warning: Dave's art warps time. You think you're taking a quick look over lunch and next thing you know, it's tonight and your eyes are still stuck on the spiral. You are very relaxed. Also, late for dinner.)

Circle wave

My work in physics doesn't influence my design work too much. But a lot of my designs I couldn't have done without being comfortable with mathematics, which is down to having studied physics.
I suppose my scientific work and my art both stem from the same math foundation, as well as both being computational in nature.
My favorite shot of my own is Circle wave probably, because I think it has a tad more subtlety than what I usually do, but still has enough going on to warrant at least a few seconds of staring.
To make a GIF, I usually start with a particular motion in mind then, via preliminary pen/paper sketch (plus sometimes a bit of trigonometry) into Processing. I often share my source code (but sometimes like to keep it a little bit guarded).

Worm.gif by Mathew Lucas

When we sent Dave down the Timeout path, he identified a favorite shot from another player: Worm.gif by Mathew Lucas, above.

My favorite shot by another player is probably Mat Lucas's Worm.gif. The motion is fascinatingly organic but there's obviously some clever geometry at play. And that palette is just killer.

Timeout with Fraser Davidson

Timeouts are lightning-quick interviews, five questions to help you get to know the players holding court at Dribbble. Thanks to Fraser for being this week's interviewee.

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

I'm Fraser Davidson, co-founder of Cub Studio along with Ben Skinner. We are a small animation company based in London, UK. We create animated content for TV, the web and occasionally mobile.

What are you working on?

At any one time, we are working on 3-6 projects. Right now we are working with ESPN and the NFL on a couple of online animations due out this month. We are halfway through creating the graphics for the third series of BAFTA-Award-winning BBC show "The Revolution Will Be Televised" and creating a short explainer video for Raygun in New Zealand.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Tell us why it's a favorite.

Right now, I think I like this test piece [POW!] for one of our upcoming pieces. We post a lot of test material on Dribbble as it's a great way to test the waters and gauge reaction for an idea. We love looping.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

This is not Fraser Davidson. This is Fraser Davidson's dog, Molly.

We use mainly After Effects and Cinema 4D to create work. This is a very simple illustration brought to life in After Effects with a few simple animated shape layers and strokes.

Choose a favorite shot from another player. Tell us why you dig it.

Going for a Spin by Latham Arnott

I really liked this piece from last month. It's a fantastic loop. Extremely simple at first, but the more you look at it, the more lovely detail and clever secondary motion you see. It has great character.

Find Fraser at Dribbble, on Twitter, at www.fraserdavdison.co.uk, and at Cub Studio.

Beta Than Ever

We're pleased to announce the beta release of the Dribbble v1 API. It's the culmination of a lot of thought and hard work. Hoots and salutes to Tristan Dunn for implementing this functionality and making it available to our community.

The v1 API contains a large set of endpoints covering most common read operations and supports authentication via OAuth, enabling long-awaited endpoints for writes. We know you can't wait to like and comment from your preferred mobile application. Or to easily upload a new shot without having to open a browser. And we're excited to see new applications that never occurred to us.

Some of you may be asking, "Didn't you already have beta API a long time ago?" Indeed we did—you can find the now-deprecated original API here. However, development on that version stalled and we never added much-requested support for write operations.

We released the original API with a lot of enthusiasum but not much of a plan. Unfortunately, supporting it while trying to grow a community, scale to meet our traffic, implement new features and establish revenue streams with only a two-person, one-developer team became a burden. As a bootstrapped startup with a mission to grow via earned, sustainable revenue, we learned some lessons.

While we're still a small organization, we've grown our developer team to four strong, enjoy the benefit of some hard-won knowledge, and have a much stronger identity as a business.

However, with great power comes great responsibility. In order to expand our API offering, it's crucial for us to establish boundaries for its use. Here are the broad strokes:

  • Please don't use the API to build a similar or alternate version of the dribbble.com website or community.
  • Please don't use the API to build a competing service to our revenue-generating offerings such as Jobs and Find Designers.

The Dribbble API Terms & Guidelines may always be a work in progress, but we've tried as best we can to spell out where we're headed and what uses of our data we reserve for ourselves. It's essential reading for anyone who wants to build with our API. If you still have questions after reading, please contact us.

With greater resources, a clearer vision, and a comprehensive set of guidelines, we're excited to revisit the API with a much broader offering and watch what the community builds. We're also happy to have an avenue for developers to participate and interact with our community of designers. And, unlike last time, we hope to mark v1 as a stable release soon, once the tires have been kicked and the bugs resolved.

If you're planning to give it a spin, be sure to follow @dribbbleapi for updates and contact us if you have any issues or questions. We'd also love to hear about any libraries or projects you've made—seeing the API get used is the most exciting part of releasing it.

One final note: So as not to disrupt existing applications that use the now-deprecated original API, it will continue to be available until April 8, 2015 at which point it will be retired. Please migrate any existing applications to the v1 API by this date.

Timeout with Charlotte Smith

Timeouts are lightning-quick interviews, five questions to help you get to know the players holding court at Dribbble. Thanks to Charlotte for being this week's interviewee.

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

Hi! My name is Charlotte Smith, I'm an Irish-born graphic designer based in Paris. But hopefully, I will soon be moving to London. I studied type and lettering, then webdesign and quickly left that to the side. So for the past two years I have been working as a freelance graphic designer concentrating mostly on lettering and illustration.

What are you working on?

I'm lucky enough to regularly work for a french magazine called Paulette Magazine which has a very graphic approach. At the moment I'm working on the lettering for their summer issue cover, they never use ready-made fonts. I'm also working on a very exciting type project. I've been asked to create 6 to 7 different letterings that will go on a kids clothes line and that will be out this winter.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Tell us why it’s a favorite.

Icecream. I've always been fascinated by paper art, and recently I gave it a go myself. I really enjoy dabbling at it in-between two projects. I was happy how the colours worked well together in this one. I have an obsession with pastel colours.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

My desk is completely covered in type sketches, paper volumes, inks and pens, so I usually work in the sitting room. For this shot, I sketched up my templates on Illustrator, printed them and then cut them out on pastel paper before sticking them together. The hardest part is to take a picture of them. I'm useless with a camera, and have no mini-studio, so I have to make do with my kitchen corner, paper taped together and a sunny day.

Choose a favorite shot from another player. Tell us why you dig it.

Pool fine art print by Karolis Strautniekas. I'm in love with Karolis Strautniekas's work. The atmosphere that she creates in each piece is beautiful, I find them very calming. The textures, details and simple colours in this piece are mind blowing.

Meetup Wrap-up

Charleston, South Carolina, September 3

  1. From organizer Mike Hartwell: We kicked the night off with one of our favorite tools at the eHouse Studio office, SoundDrop. Loading up our playlist with mingle music, beers on ice and piping hot pizza, we were ready to welcome a fabulous 50 RSVP’d Charleston friends. With the usual Dribbble swag laid out, Jenelle Koles and Macy White made sure to check-in each guest with a warm welcome.

Seven lucky folks were picked at random from our “take a shot” rebound raffle. Charged with doodling a rebound of our "Tools of the Trade" illustration our guests put pen to paper. The remainder of the evening was spent brainstorming the tools that make our processes more efficient, productive, versatile, etc. Using the Post-it Note® method we where able to cluster similar apps, services & methods.

Now that our call has been answered comes the real work. Regardless of my personal fear of large crowds, it’s now my mission to sustain our newly founded community through sharing, educating and inspiring diverse Charleston creatives. Thanks to our sponsors Shopify, Dribbble, A Book Apart and eHouse Studio. Your contribution helped make our meetup a huge success.

The Bartlett

228 W. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, Washington

This space is not an office.

A designer does not work in this space, but this space is the work of a designer. The designer owns this space. The designer's husband, a music promoter, also owns this space. Together, they designed this space.

They wanted to run a music venue. They wanted to promote local artists. They wanted to open a cafe. For two years, they designed and promoted and promoted and designed. Last year, they opened this space. This weekend, this space — their space — hosts a festival showcasing 33 independent musical artists on stage and the works of 33 poster artists on the walls.

This space is The Bartlett.

The Designer + The Promoter

Karli and Caleb Ingersoll grew up playing music and attending shows. Karli is a designer with broad experience and a special interest in designing for the independent music universe. Before marrying Karli, Caleb managed The Red Room, a 400-person venue in Kennewick, Washington. Caleb now promotes musicians at The Bartlett, the couple's Indiegogo-fueled dream-made-real, a 150-person all-ages music venue/cafe in a scruffy neighborhood on the edge of downtown Spokane hard by the Greyhound station.

The Outside + The Inside

Caleb and Karli split design tasks for The Bartlett. While he focused more on interior design and she focused more on branding, they both kept simplicity at the core of their efforts. To their minds, The Bartlett's design elements should serve as distinctive but understated backdrops allowing the musicians and poster artists to star as ever-changing focal points.

"All of our branding choices have been somewhat subtle and more mood driven, allowing for a blank canvas for the music and events we book," Karli told Dribbble. The Bartlett's facade is mostly black and white, with some wood accents. The cafe and the venue feature natural textures, brick walls, and hundred-year-old wood floors: lovely, strong, understated. "The idea is for all of it to get out of the way and almost be unnoticeable so that the focal point can really the the music."

As for technical design, the two wanted the space to attract bands that might typically appear at larger venues. "We had experience running shows in the past and were able to apply that into every little piece of the design ... the actual layout and selection of equipment," Caleb said. "I wanted a sound system that you might find in a 500-capacity music venue, but set in a smaller room."

The Logo + The Signage

When it came to branding, Karli wanted to maintain the simplicity of the interior while also creating something memorable. During the process, she worked her design muscles in new ways.

"I went through a ridiculous amount of design attempts before I really hit the nail on the head. It was the most laborious project I've ever done but through it I felt like I really grew." The work not only served The Bartlett, but also Karli's professional life. "I now see The Bartlett logo in creative briefs from clients, which gives me a great feeling of satisfaction knowing it has directed my career and style in a big way."

Bartfest the First

At The Bartlett, Karli and Caleb meld music and art and community. Bartfest, the first iteration of which kicks off Friday, takes those passions to a higher pitch. The three-day festival features 33 bands, each of which has been paired with a designer who created a unique show poster for their band. Featured designers include a number of Dribbblers. We've highlighted their work below. (If you're part of Bartfest and we missed you, we'll happily add you to our grid. Email susanna@dribbble.com.)

  1. Row 1, L-R: Karli Ingersoll for Glasser, Mike Shamberg for Nite Jewel, Matt Bogue for Dead Serious Lovers

Row 2, L-R: Marcus Brown for Blouse, Jessie Spaccia for Scott Ryan, Caroline F Schibel for Joseph

Row 3, L-R: Brandon DeLauney for Young Magic, Tony Kuchar for Bearcubbin', Amanda R. Johnson for Shelby Earl

Row 4, L-R: Factory Arts for Von the Baptist, Danielle Davis for Wild Ones, Jessie Pierpoint for Telekinesis

Row 5, L-R: John Mujica for Normal Babies, Tiffany Patterson for Modern Kin, Kaarin S for Summer Cannibals

Row 6, L-R: Jacob Greif for Hundred Waters, Keely Honeywell for Pine League, Ryan Monson for Sea Giant

Thanks, Karli, for all of your help.

Spaced features interesting Dribbbler office spaces. E-mail susanna@dribbble.com to be considered for an upcoming article.

  1. North American social media is blowing up with videos of people taking the Ice Bucket Challenge. An effort to raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, the challenge has raised more than $100 million for the ALS Association and increased donations to other ALS-focused organizations as well. Several Dribbblers have taken the challenge.

Top Row, L-R: Chad Geran dumped the bucket, drew the bucket. Frame & Follie Design Co., co-owned by Jasmine Habart, accepted the challenge and donated to ALS Canada. Kyle Loaney designed a poster for beer to put in the ice bucket: Excelsior Brewing Co's Biscuit Pants Session Ale, part of Ales for ALS 2014. Ales for ALS supplies brewers with hops and ales to brew their own beers; in return, brewers donate $1 of every pint sold to the ALS Therapy Development Institute.

Bottom Row, L-R: IMM dove INTO the bucket (aka ice-fed Boulder Creek) and donated $100 for each of its 90 employees; posted by Sergey Grigoryan. Amanda Jaquin (nominated by Jennifer Ho) dumped her bucket on a fat cat and Dai Dietzmann dumped hers on a happy dog.

Timeout with Frank Denney

Timeouts are lightning-quick interviews, five questions to help you get to know the players holding court at Dribbble. Thanks to Frank for being this week's interviewee.

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

Hey! My name is Frank Denney. I'm a Korean-born, Iowa-raised designer currently living and working in Minneapolis, MN. About a decade ago I discovered that sports and design make me incredibly happy, and have been doing it ever since.

I am the senior graphic designer at Sport Ngin, where I design websites for sports organizations from youth to the pros. Prior to that, I was a bicycle and snowboard designer, digital artist, and dabbled as a freelancer for a bit.

What are you working on?

I'm currently working with a good friend and fellow Dribbbler, Joe Barrett, on a website for a town baseball club that I'm super pumped about. Giving a small town club team in Minnesota the same treatment that is usually reserved for a professional team really excites me. I'm also doing some branding work with an awesome group of breast-cancer-surviving ladies who are running a dragon boat racing team.

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Tell us why it’s a favorite.

Beast Mode is my favorite because it's one of my most recent. I tend to like newer things because every new project is an opportunity to remind myself that I'm still learning. This was a personal project of mine experimenting and focusing on a number of different lighting techniques, 3D rendering, and photo treatments.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

My home setup includes an iMac when I want to put my head down, a MacBook Pro when I'm multi-tasking, and a couple 15" monitors on reserve for really long projects. I use my Sketchbook for ideas and wireframes, and my Daft Punk action figures for when I lose myself to dance.

Choose a favorite player. Tell us why you dig them.

Every time I look at the work of Marie Bergeron I am in awe. The details, craftsmanship, and her unique style of portraying some of the most iconic figures is remarkable. (Marie's Daft Punk 2x Gauntlet Gallery above.)
