People hate on bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Slipknot, A7X and even the older bands like Metallica and Maiden simply out of jealousy and anger. They dislike how calculated these bands are - how easily they churn out good music and it legitimately pisses metal elitists off. Because, yanno, metal isn’t supposed to be popular and the genre should just burn out - because then the “true” metal fans would roll around in the ashes and be happy about it. 5FDP and the rest of ‘em make chart toppers and sells out arenas and bring in fans from all walks and that’s not metal enough for metal fans. 

If you taste even just a sliver of success, people claim sellout. It’s so incredibly disappointing to see fans dig at each other and the bands that keep this genre relevant and alive. You don’t have to like a band to respect what it is doing. You don’t have to like nu metal or any other subgenere to simply appreciate that it exists and thrives separately than your own favorite subgenere. Metal is the absolute largest genre of music in the world with virtually 100s of subgeneres and you don’t have to like them all - but fuck, you have to respect it. Respect your own culture and scene. 

Elitists would rather watch a band crash and burn and not support it because that way it stays underground and the band never becomes a household name. Trivium debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 for Silence in the Snow alongside many other artists and genres and while I was happy, there were thousands of fans calling us sell outs, because god forbid us or any other metal band gets anywhere. God forbid we do what we love and also support a lifestyle off it. God forbid I pay my mortgage every month. 

It’s not metal if people like you. Nowadays, metal isn’t metal enough for itself.
