Nerdy Fact #1434: Wonder Woman was originally based on two women: the wife of creator William Marston and one of his former students that both he and his wife had sexual encounters with.

How about you actually name ‘em?

Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne were among a number of women who contributed to the original Wonder Woman, and they’re fascinating people in their own right.

Elizabeth Holloway Marston was a brilliant woman. She earned three university degrees in psychology and law at a time when few women received any tertiary education. She was a successful career woman who assisted her husband with his work and was frequently the breadwinner of the family.

The main reason she was able to continue working after having children? Olive Byrne, who was not simply a casual “sexual encounter”, but the Marstons’ lover and life partner. To enable Elizabeth to work, Olive stayed at home and raised both her and Elizabeth’s children. She also wrote for Family Circle and contributed to Marston’s research.

Elizabeth is credited with pushing her husband to create a female superhero, and after his death she worked hard to preserve his vision for the character, urging DC to employ her as the comic’s editor (she was ignored).

Wonder Woman’s bracelet’s are Olive’s bracelets: Olive was known for wearing a pair of wide silver bracelets, and Marston had these in mind when he envisioned Diana’s bullet-deflecting accessories.

Marston died in 1947, but Elizabeth and Olive continued to live together until the end of their lives.

Wait. Clarification please. Are you telling me that the creator of Wonder WOMAN WAS IN A POLY-AMOROUS RELATIONSHIP?

Yep! They were in a poly relationship and had four children together, two by Elizabeth and two by Olive.

(And for those who’ve asked about sources, the Marstons’ story is covered in detail in The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore and Wonder Woman: The Complete History by Les Daniels)

Wonder Woman was inspired and shaped by not only a man who was incredibly progressive and awesome by todays standards let alone the standards of the day he lived in but also by a fierce, intelligent and awesome bisexual woman

This is one of the many reasons why the ways DC has ruined Wonder Woman in their pursuit of making the book as backwards and heteronormative as possible pisses me off…

I don’t think you’ve been keeping up with Wonder Woman. The current writer, Greg Rucka, has pointed out that Wonder Woman has lovers on Themiscyra thus canonizing her queerness. I think William, Elizabeth and Olive would be proud. Here's an interview with Rucka about it. http://www.comicosity.com/exclusive-interview-greg-rucka-on-queer-narrative-and-wonder-woman/

I never mention this in my weekly comics pull posts (and I realize I'm behind on those) because this is a weekly release and I don't want to get redundant. Not only is it weekly, but it's also digital-first and published in a landscape format, rather than the usual portrait. The Legend of Wonder Woman is written by Renae DeLiz and illustrated, colored and lettered by Ray Dillon. I've been following it from the beginning, but recently Kotaku included it on a list of unfairly overlooked comics. This is a new telling of the classic story that takes place during WWII. It has all the classic elements. Diana born of clay, American military pilot Steve Trevor crash-landing on Paradise Island, Diana escorting him back to man's world, Diana meeting and befriending Etta Candy and the girls of Holliday College. Rather than join the military and working as secretary to Steve Trevor in Washington DC as she did in the original stories by William Moulton Marston, she joins the war effort and goes to Europe to work as a nurse. Etta and the Holliday Girls go with her. The writing is clever and sharp, and includes enough supernatural (the Nazis are reviving dead soldiers for an unstoppable zombie army, and Ares is trying to revive a Titan to destroy the world) to give you warm memories of the original Sensation Comics run. The art is gorgeous and warm, exciting and introspective, all at the same time. There's also a good amount of humor as well. What makes this really stand out for me is the treatment of Etta Candy. In the original stories from the '40s, she was a big girl with infinite confidence in herself. She was a happy-go-lucky girl who always found a way to help Diana catch the bad guys. She and the Holliday Girls could always be counted on in the clutch. Sadly, as other writers took over, she changed. She was still fat, but now she was always concerned about her weight, self-conscious, and very unhappy. Even in the otherwise excellent George Perez reboot of the mid-eighties, she stayed this way. The writers just couldn't understand how a big girl like that could be happy. Renae DeLiz has addressed this. Etta is back to her crazy confident self again. She's not a slob or unhealthy. She's just fat. She takes care of herself, dresses and looks her best, and has so much self-confidence that all the boys chase her and less-confident girls are jealous of her. She's Diana's first and best friend in America. She's a source of sound advice and an intelligent, competent woman who always comes through for Diana when she needs it. I would say it's this superior treatment of Etta Candy that elevates this title from average to excellent. A loud, joyful, confident and competent Etta is what the Wonder Woman story has been missing for the last six decades.

They took all the pop music. And made the perfect pop song. I am in awe.

holy shit. editing on point.

Even I, who generally is not a big fan of modern pop music, must admit that this is fantastic. Genius.

wow. If you have an interest in editing video or sound: this is really really fabulous.

I would never have guessed that Taylor Swift could mix so nicely with Tove Lo.

Don’t know half the songs, still love it

The reason this works so well isn't just some God-level editing skills, but because the majority of hits on the radio are all written by the same four of five people. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/10/hit-charade/403192/

This excellent visual representation of that old scam, “trickle down economics”, has been all over Twitter recently.

And then the glass on top gets too big and too full and all the other little glasses below it break and then they all shatter.

And the big glass blames the little glasses for not working hard enough to hold it up.

I love manga. Above that, I love yuri manga. And above that, I love the yuri manga created by Akiko Morishima. She is far and away my favorite creator of lesbian-themed manga. While she’s created straight shoujo manga and yaoi (gay male) manga, she is primarily a creator of manga about love between lesbian and bisexual women. The earliest work of hers I’ve been able to find is from the Japanese magazine Anise, written for lesbian and bi women in Japan, which was published for a short time in late ‘90s/early 2000s.

Her work features girls as young as junior high, and as old as their 50s, but the majority of her stories involve office ladies in their twenties. Her style is strong on heavy linework, but still very cute, and often breathtakingly beautiful. Quite often there is nudity and sex depicted. Her characters are engaging and likable. You want them to be happy and to get together (if they haven’t already) and weather the storm (if they’re already together.) While her work can veer towards melodrama, she knows to pull back at the last minute with just the right amount of humor.

Don’t forget to read these pages from right to left.
