George Michael’s life was constantly trailed by homophobic media that painted him as a sexual deviant and a drug addicted train wreck “corrupted” by the gay lifestyle. In reality, George Michael was an artist who, for a large portion of his life, was forced to hide his sexuality and live a lie in a pre-millennium society that emotionally punished anybody whose orientation challenged heteronormative expectations. Let us not forget the paths paved by people like George Michael: those who bravely came out during a time when closet doors were locked from the outside.

I think we really need to reaffirm now that no amount of homophobia can be acceptable in our culture. There is no such this as harmless or victimless homophobia. All homophobia contributes to violence against us. You can not “disagree” with lgbt people’s “lifestyles” without supporting the rhetoric and legislation that puts us in very real danger.
this is religious discrimination. Christians are not inherently “homophobic” but our faith requires us (if we take it seriously) to disagree with the belief that homosexual behaviors are in any way beneficial to a person or to a society.
the legislation and rhetoric are not what put the lgbt community in danger. it is the choices of radical and hateful individuals/terrorists that put the lgbt community in danger.
If you think that being LGBT+ is “harmful” to a person of to society, then YOU are harmful to us. If your interpretation of your faith requires you to believe that, then your interpretation of your faith is harmful to us.
Soooooooooooo HIV and AIDs are not harmful?
The HIV/AIDs crisis was the direct result of federal inaction towards a public health crisis. LGBT+ people were cut off from medical support systems- poor access to health insurance, lack of health clinics, and high rates of poverty through discrimination and stigma.
LGBT+ people did not suffer and die in such tragically large numbers because being LGBT+ was somehow inherently unhealthy. LGBT+ people suffered and died in such tragically large numbers because our communities were beset by a disease while the powers that be ignored and neglected the problem because of ingrained and systematic homophobia.

On Tuesday, at the United State of Women Summit in Washington D.C., first lady Michelle Obama sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a wide ranging chat. When the topic turned to what men can do for equality, Obama had two repeating words, “Be better.” She also doled out advice for women and the confusion about “bravery.”
I don’t recall a First Lady in my lifetime who was anywhere close to as inspirational and amazing as Michelle Obama.
