Wa aleikum asalaam,

I am working on pulling ahadith, but I want you to please reach out to a mental health professional if you haven't already. Religion is helpful but intrusive thoughts can be caused by a chemical misbalance in your brain and religion cant fix that. God gave us the gift of science and medicine to help us.

Aside from that, God is Most Just and to punish someone because they can't control the thoughts they have wouldnt be just. Just like a person who is not mentally able to comprehend prayer or its actions is not responsible for prayer, those with other illnesses are not responsible for how they are limited within religious practice.

I'll update this as i have more resources.

Can you please share links to articles where light is shed on the shia literature focussing on the SCIENCE OF HADEES? it is often a criticism from the Sunni brethren that chain of narration in shia hadees are often weak and unreliable with no scientific possibility of tracing it back to the infallibles. Is it also not true that some modern shia scholars have falsified several narrations in al Kafi based on research on the chain? So what is it that a layman has to follow esp someone new to shiism

We generally advise that new muslims don’t get caught up in hadith science.

Focusing on Quran, Quran Commentaries like Al-Mizan and Enlightening Commentary of the Holy Quran, and Biographies of the Infallibles. We advise this because it is better to have a good foundation before delving into the details of why some hadiths are considered invalid and others are not. We are not hadith scientists, so we recommend you looking at the hadith collections and literature on al-islam.org.

Salam, i have been battling with my faith for a couple years now. I was someone who was extremely faithful and “religious” but I’ve been struggling to even care about prayer, dua etc. even though I still do it I feel like I don’t want to. I need a break from everything but my family laughs at me when I say I need a break from work and study. I feel I’m getting angry all the time and my adab is bad. How can I fix this? I’m so tired and I’ve been struggling to care about life in general

Wa aleikum asalaamI'm so sorry you're struggling right now. I want to start by saying that fluctuations in practice and sincerity are totally normal. They happen to everyone. In your case, it sounds like you have reached a point where you need to seek a professional to help you get back on track. Losing interest in life or things that used to make you happy are signs of clinical depression. You might just need help producing the right levels if dopamine and serotonin. It's important to look after yourself even if it means ignoring friends/family. Talk to your teachers and work managers to see if you can take a wee off without penalties to get things back on track. You're always welcome to come talk to us here, but we really want you to reach to a campus nurse or other facility for help.

and bro stop throwing around opinions like that. people asking you that question could actually be someone who feels like they've met someone who could be their soulmate and you with your negativity are just making them depressed and putting obstacles on their path to union.

First of all, there are several people involved with this blog, half of which are women so please be respectful. Also, if you have something to offer we are happy to take constructive criticism and correct our posts. We do it all the time. The people who run this blog do our best to supply the correct information with due research. Stay blessed

Allah swt said in the Holy Quran 'We created you in pairs' are you trying to refute Quran verses with your own personal opinion?

Actually that verse is not referring to literal mates but rather that we have been made in pairs. Kind of like pairing in Noah’s Ark. It has nothing to do with marriage or soul mates.

After mentioning these two phenomenal blessings of Allah, it refers to the spiritual signs of Allah and says:

“And we created you in pairs”.

The term /azwaj/ is the plural form of the term /zauj/ which means ‘mate, companion, a couple, and gender (husband or wife)’ from which not only is a man created and through which his generation survives, but also his spouse is counted as the reason for his spiritual tranquility, as Surah Rum No. 30 verse 21 says:

“And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts)…”.

In other words, the genders (masculine and feminine) are the complement of each other then, they become complete and this makes them a whole.

Since the term /azwaj/ also means: ‘kinds, species, and classes’, some commentators have rendered it to mean: ‘the variations in man from the point of color, race, language, different spiritual levels and talents’; which are signs of Allah’s greatness and the cause of perfection in societies.

Thank you for clarifying. I'm not saying Allah has forced us to marry a particular person but is it the case that based on our decisions he has put us on a path to a person? Fate?

It's not necessarily fate, because we have a choice in the matter. We are the ones that talk to, learn about and make the final decision about who we are going to marry. Fate would remove choice from the decision. Think of it more as a kindred spirit. When you've met the person or spirit that you're supposed to marry, it will be easy. You won't have to fight for it. It's not going to be all peaches and roses but it won't be so hard that you want to give up. As for the ayas mentioned, they do not actually refer to soulmates but to Adam and Eve. In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful1."O' people! be in awe of your Lord, Who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate and spread from them (the couple) many men and women. And be in awe of Allah through Whom you demand one of another, as well as any ties of kinship; Surely Allah is watching over you."The first verse of this Surah addresses all human beings. The content of this verse is a message to mankind as a whole. It invites them to piety and being in awe of Allah. It says:"O' people! be in awe of your Lord..."Then, to introduce the Lord Who is aware of all deeds of human beings, it points to one of His attributes which is the origin of the unity of human race. It says:"... Who created you from a single soul ..."The phrase 'a single soul' refers to the first human being whom the Qur'an introduces as 'Adam', the father of all human beings. The application of the term /bani'adam/ 'the children of 'Adam' in the Qur'an refers to this meaning, too. Then, in the next sentence, it says:"…And from it created its mate ...This means that He created Adam's wife from his nature, not from the limbs of his body. Basing on a tradition from Imam Baqir (as) the creation of Eve from one of the ribs of Adam has intensely been rejected, and it has been stipulated that Eve was created from the rest of Adam's clay.In the next verse, it continues saying:"... and spread from them (the couple) many men and women..."This idea leads to the comprehension that the multiplying of the race of the children of Adam has been performed only through Adam and his wife, and no other creature has had any hand in it.Then, for the sake of the importance that piety has in the structure of the foundation of a safe and sound society, again it invites people to observing piety. It advises people to be in awe of Allah, the One Who is Great in their view, so that when they want to demand something from others, they apply His Name. It says:"... And be in awe of Allah through Whom you demand one of another..."And it adds that:"... as well as any ties of kinship..."Mentioning this subject here is a sign of an extraordinary importance that the Qur'an maintains for strengthening blood-kinship.At the end of the verse, it says:"... Surely Allah is watching over you."That is, He sees all your deeds and intentions and, by the way, He protects you against unpleasant adventures

What about this quote from the Quran “O humankind, have consciousness of your Loving-Sustainer,[1] who created you from a single nafs (soul) and created from it her zawj (mate) and dispersed from both many men and women. And have God Consciousness, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, God is ever, over you, an Observer.”

You cannot bring forth a Quranic text and than assume this is what it says. This is speaking about the primary knowledge, in the infinite undisclosed knowledge of God there lies a soul out there that God knows about but than there is our choice, we tend to use our own nafs and conclusion in picking our spouse. When our parents choose for example a spouse, you cannot say that that is ‘written’ it is actually considered disbelief for you to ascribe to God that He forced you to marry. It is a long discussion for sure but isn’t as simple as the verse aforementioned.

Can you talk more about qadr? What does it mean?

Dear Anon, it is difficult to explain Qadr in just a couple of sentences. It needs research and throughout understanding.

I have heard differing opinions on this subject but does Allah SWT write people for us? Are there soulmates?

If the question is in regard to soulmates in marriage, then, no. There is no ‘this was written for you to marry fulan and fulan’. There is two types of knowledge, God’s infinite knowledge that He alone possesses than there's the secondary knowledge in the tablet. This knowledge changes due to our actions. Our spouse/soulmate is our choice and we choose. The common Arab phrase, ‘Qism wa Naseeb’, is flawed and against our beliefs and doctrine.

Salaam! Is this sahih? Abu Bashir says: Imam Abu Abdullah Jaffar Sadiq said: My father told me: A FIRE WILL CERTAINLY APPEAR FROM AZERBAIJAN. AND NOTHING WILL BE ABLE TO STAND IN ITS WAY. STAY IN YOUR HOMES WHEN THIS HAPPENS. Do whatever we do. (In other words, when we stay at home, you stay at home, too). And when our Qaim [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] moves, run swiftly and without stopping towards him... (Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani p. 311)

Wesalam,

When it comes to our traditions, we don’t analyze everything by saying ‘Sahih, Dh’aeef, etc.’ Since the matn (content) is just as important. In terms of this report you would need to provide more information, the Arabic text would help and the chain would help us analyze. But, in essence most of these traditions that speak of signs are either weak or weak in content.
