Your face is tanking

And now for today’s lesson in institutionalised misogyny.

Today’s news: Ghostbusters ‘tanks’, ‘stumbles’ with 53% drop in its second week.

Presumably that’s a bad performance compared to other action movies in their second week then?

Let’s check…

  • Captain America: Civil War: -59.5%
  • Dark Knight: -52%
  • Amazing Spider Man: -61%

Oh, and for an example of an actual ‘tanking’:

  • Batman vs Superman: -69%

Now, let’s examine all the reporting last week that Ghostbusters was going to struggle because of its first week multiplier against its budget…

Ghostbusters first weekend US figures: $46m It had a $144m budget, so in its first week it made 32% of that. Descriptions: ‘Lacklustre’, ‘problematic’, ‘will haunt Sony’

Star Trek Beyond first weekend US figures: $59.6m It had a $189m budget, so in its first week it made 30% of its budget. Reporting: ‘Dominates’, ‘wins big’

To be clear: there are articles describing both movies’ openings as ‘solid’. But there’s basically no one calling Beyond worrying or Ghostbusters a big win.

So. ‘Nuff said? **********EDIT**********

A few people have requested sauce for the data above. Honestly, this post was an off-the-cuff thing this morning done off the first page of Google. I’ve resisted actually providing said data because the % drop and $ profit figures are verifiable basically anywhere you like and the quotes are all over the place. I have not done a thorough corpus analysis of everything written on Ghostbusters and Beyond, nor do I plan to. However, because I’m so damn nice, here are the particular articles I happened to read for the Googley-challenged…

And, to be fair, on looking for my original sources just now, I also found this, so there is at least one article that’s circumspect about Beyond’s success. I can’t find the article where I got the second week drops info, but I imagine the numbers came straight from here and here.

There were more articles all showing this basic trend, but honestly, no matter how many I list, if you don’t believe me you’re gonna have to go search for yourself anyway, and if you do believe me, well, you already believe me, so why bother?

It's been 32 years, 1 month, 4 days, and an incalculable number of hours since the original Ghostbusters first premiered, and a lot has come along, gone away and changed in that time. Paul Feig's Ghostbusters had the unenviable task of following the fondly remembered and much-loved 1984 original, and even acknowledging the obvious comparisons between the two, the newest outing of the Ghostbusters does feature a lot of similar, if not identical story beats to its predecessor. Going into the screening there was the apprehensive concern that the new film wouldn't live up to expectations, that it would re-tread of the original; bringing nothing new to the table, and that the cast would suffer from the stereotypes and preconceptions that had been presented or formed by the initial round of trailers. Fortunately, that isn't all there is to the film. Click here to read more.

REVIEW: Ghostheads - The Ghostbusters fan Documentary   Ghostheads takes an unprecedented and detailed look at some of the real life, hardcore fans in our community. It follows and tells the stories of a half dozen fans as they make fulfill childhood dreams, make pilgrimages to film locations, meet cast members and form lasting friendships through the common thread that binds them together: Ghostbusters. While watching Ghostheads, I felt a strong personal nostalgia for events that occurred in the Ghostbusters fan community, a unique experience for me and my friends as we had actually taken part in or witnessed the events being portrayed; something I've never experienced while watching a documentary before. The movie is very uplifting and brutally sincere at times and features amazing interviews with Ghostbusters cast members, producers and extras. It is well composed with interviews, clips from the movies, animations and day in the life footage of the featured Ghostheads. The movie is not without a dark side, however. Ghostheads aims to show several different sides of the Ghostbusters fan community. We see how our fellow fans live, and the difficulties that some live with every day. It shares the hardships that befall the fans, both caused by outside forces as well as resulting from their own lifestyle choices. This can make it hard to get through particular parts of the documentary at times. Beyond that, there are many touching moments and heartfelt messages expressed though out the documentary, and the common message is that life is better -overall- for the individuals filmed, thanks in large part to their love and dedication to Ghostbusters. Ghostheads premieres on Netflix July 15th worldwide. For more information , visit GhostheadsMovie.com.

Today on ‘kids are way more chill than adults and we should learn from them’:

I was waiting in line at a cinema when I heard a little boy and girl (who couldn’t have been more than ten) start talking about Ghostbusters as they stood in front of a massive poster. The convo went like this:

Girl: Ghostbusters? What the heck is that?

Boy: Oh! They have guns and they fight ghosts -

Girl: You’ve seen it? Is it scary?

Boy: No, I’ve seen the other ones. One was all boys, two was all boys, and now three is all girls. I haven’t seen the third one.

Girl: But was it scary? I don’t like scary movies.

Boy: Nah, it’s not scary. But if you want to, I can watch it with you.

Adults are out there all hysterical that the new Ghostbusters is going to ‘ruin their childhood’. Actual children are either concerned if it’s scary, and ready to sit with their friend if it is.
