The Dressing Game

@rees1221 / rees1221.tumblr.com

This isn't a fashion blog in the sense that I'm going to tell you what to wear. I'm just going to give you ideas on how to wear what you already own. It's not about what you wear, it's about how you wear it.

LICKITY SPLIT. Sometimes when I go to the gym I bump into moms with their little kids and today a little girl stopped and I thought she was gonna say hey so I grinned and said HELLO and she turned and licked the air at me. YUMMA. -mustache kiss

Beautiful Jcrew Shoes to drool over. On that note, you can buy colorful heels pretty much anywhere these days, you don't have to buy a pair from Jcrew for $180. And that extra pop of color can make an outfit...like with boyfriend jeans and a tucked in silk blouse. Or even just a plain tanktop. So many options!

Its been a while, but to cap off the tshirt segment, I think it’s really important to stay true to your style. Think of your tshirt as a canvas for the rest of your look..and channel what you feel comfortable and stylish in using that as a base. Just because skinny jeans and a graphic tee is trending doesnt mean thats how you have to wear it, and you have to go buy that style of graphic tee. You can see Rihanna just threw a vest over a basic Mickey graphic tee, and it creates a whole new vibe. Or pairing it with a skirt and a sweater and heels or booties can create a whole different feel. It really is limitless, and who doesn’t own tons of tees from who knows what-5ks, charities, etc. You really don’t need to spend money buying new clothes all the time..just focus on getting the most out of the clothes you do have and think out of the box!

Here are two more examples of the white t-shirt and how to wear them. Notice in the second pic how it doesn't stand out at all, and you hardly even take into account she just has on a white shirt, but that can be the key to making a great outfit...it makes all the other great pieces stand out and unifies them.

Here are a few other ideas for your white tee:

-Throw a skinny belt over it, throw on some shorts and a cute pair of flats and maybe a long chain necklace.

-Get a fur or beaded vest, throw on over some skinny jeans and some wedges.

-If it's big enough, use it as a coverup at the beach.

-Throw it on under a jean jacket or a jean vest and a pair of colorful or khaki shorts.

-Go monochromatic for a day and wear white skinny jeans or white shorts, some brown or khaki sandals or wedges, and some gold jewelry...white, no matter what form, always highlights a good tan...so this is a good look for the summer.

-Throw on a statement necklace, a pair of jeans and a cute pair of heels for a casual, but chic shopping or lunch look.

The basic white tee. You can't go wrong with owning numerous white t-shirts. They are a great canvas to your outfit, from there you can throw on skinny colorful jeans, a funky vest or scarf, or even just a statement necklace and boots. The key for the perfect white shirt is finding one that isn't too tight, but doesn't swallow you up either. Granted, there is a time and place for any size (if oversized is your thing...we'll get to that, or if you like to wear shirts tucked into skirts or something, smaller can usually create a cleaner, less frumpy look), but if you want just a good everyday white shirt, I recommend a boat neck or v-neck to give it a little feminine flair, and maybe get one that is a little loose, but still is flattering and doesn't make you lose your shape.

I think I'm going to devote this week to t-shirts. Because everyone owns them, but I fear most people think they are reserved for working out, or for casual days with jeans and flats. So, keep an eye out for upcoming posts, because you'd be surprised how many ways you can work your t-shirts into your wardrobe :)

I'd like to start with saying I like the idea of blogging, but have never really thought of myself as proactive enough to physically run a blog. I've also considered a fashion blog for a long time, but never really felt compelled to do it for several reasons. A) Everybody and their mother has a fashion blog these days it seems B) I love fashion. Everything about it. Part of that love comes from watching how other people express themselves, and their personal fashion. So I'd really like to be the last person to ever tell anyone what they should be wearing. The greatest thing about fashion is how uniquely it allows you to express yourself, and that should never be swayed by anyone else's opinion of what is fashionable.

Because if you think about it, that's all there is in fashion...opinion. There is no right and wrong. Even the professionals are just experimenting with what they think people will want to wear, or what will shock the public. So, this isn't a blog intended to tell you what to wear. Or to show you pretty clothes, because there's no point in that, there is an endless supply of beautiful clothing out there, and I welcome you to research it, for fashion can truly be an art. So why am I starting this blog? Because I'm bored. But also, because I really enjoy the creativity you find within fashion, and more specifically, in putting an outfit together.

So many of my friends complain they don't have enough clothes, or they don't have the right clothes, and as a result, they'll never be fashionable enough. But I think everyone needs to get one thing through their minds to begin with....if you see a cute outfit, you DON'T have to replicate it exactly to get the same effect. So you see a girl walk by in a really cute combination of a white button down and red scarf with little diamond patterns. Your mind is probably thinking several things...which may include whether you own a white button down, or that you might have seen that scarf at Dillard's the other day. What it should be thinking though, is whether you have something that would give you the same effect. Maybe you have a red scarf with little flowers, so what? It's going to look equally as cute or fashionable. Besides, if you are always trying to wear exactly what everyone else is, you're going to waste a lot of money, and you're never going to accomplish the most important thing in being fashionable: having your own style.

So, I'm here to offer some advice. I'm no pro, and frankly, I wear running shorts and t-shirts a lot, and am not always fashionable, and I don't look cute enough on a daily basis to justify photographing myself every morning for you guys. But one thing I think I'm fair at is seeing the endless possibilities that an item of clothing can offer. So I'm here to show you guys that even if you have 5 things in your closet, you can most likely make 50 outfits out of those 5 things. Being fashionable isn't always about how nice, or how many clothes you have. It's all in how you wear those clothes, and how you put your look together.
