Transforming into a Swan: Swan Symbolism in Arya’s story

So my initial plan was to write about Arya’s swan symbolism more in depth and post it, but I thought screw it, I’ll just do a write-up of all the connections Arya has to the swan from her name meaning, visual cues in her narrative, symbolism and ties to mythology, as well as what this swan symbolism could add up to in the next two books and her endgame.  And just like in my meta about Arya and her parallels to Cinderella in A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes there will definitely be some Arya/Gendry sprinkled within, which couldn’t be helped due to some of Arya’s very specific symbolism, so I’ll be talking about their potential romantic relationship as well. Now onto the main event.

Name Meaning

The name ‘Arya’ and the word ‘swan’ literally means “a song”.  Arya is a homophone for ‘aria’, a term in opera that refers to a solo singing section usually performed by a woman.  And the word ‘swan’ comes from the Indo-European root word *swen: “to sound or sing”.  So in other words, the root words for ‘Arya’ and ‘swan’ are synonyms.  And because of Arya’s many connections to swans and the root ‘aria’ we can also connect Arya to the Swan Song.  The Swan Song refers to the ancient belief that swans sing a beautiful song before their deaths after spending their life in silence (swans make noise but they don’t sing, and Arya also can’t technically sing either, or at least Arya claims she can’t).  A metaphorical phrase for a Swan Song means a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement, which connects to the meaning of ‘aria’ being a solo operatic performance.  ‘Aria’ also means ‘air’ and Arya expressly yearns to fly several times in her chapters.  Wings are also mentioned which relates to ‘air’ as well.

If I had wings, I could fly back to Winterfell and see for myself.  And if it was true, I'd just fly away, fly up past the moon and the shining stars, and see all the things in Old Nan's stories, dragons and sea monsters and the Titan of Braavos, and maybe I wouldn't ever fly back unless I wanted to. - Arya X ACOK
...I wish I could change into a wolf and grow wings and fly away. - Arya XIII ASOS
She might be bald and skinny, but Mercy had a pretty smile, and a certain grace. Even Izembaro agreed that she was graceful. She was not far from the Gate as the crows flies, but for girls with feet instead of wings the way was longer. – Mercy TWOW

there is something so tender and childlike in gendry telling arya she looks nice, this is the first time he sees his only friend in a ladylike attire, and with how perceptive we know gendry really is, he can clearly see that arya is feeling awkward and out of place, he gives her a compliment and he absolutely means it.

“Did Lord Stannis question you as well?” “The bald one? No, not him. He never said no word, just glared at me, like I was some raper who done for his daughter.” “Mind your filthy tongue,” the master said. “This is the King’s own Hand.” The boy lowered his eyes. “A smart boy, but stubborn. That helm . . . the others call him bullheaded, so he threw it in their teeth.”

we know beforehand he's a child with no filter and that he's honest.

“Riverrun.” Gendry put the hammer down and looked at her. “You look different now. Like a proper little girl.” “I look like an oak tree, with all these stupid acorns.” “Nice, though. A nice oak tree.” He stepped closer, and sniffed at her. “You even smell nice for a change.”

and he seems to be s m i t t e n let me tell you.

“You don’t. You stink.” Arya shoved him back against the anvil and made to run, but Gendry caught her arm. She stuck a foot between his legs and tripped him, but he yanked her down with him, and they rolled across the floor of the smithy. He was very strong, but she was quicker. Every time he tried to hold her still she wriggled free and punched him. Gendry only laughed at the blows, which made her mad. He finally caught both her wrists in one hand and started to tickle her with the other, so Arya slammed her knee between his legs, and wrenched free. Both of them were covered in dirt, and one sleeve was tom. on her stupid acorn dress. “I bet I don’t look so nice now,” she shouted.

do i think he briefly panicked when arya thought he was mocking her? well, yes i do. it actually says that arya made a run for it, but gendry stopped her (did he had any intention of saying he's telling her the truth, that he actually finds her pretty... well, we will never know) and then with a push and pull they started wrestling in the forge floor.

arya is irritated with him, she has convinced herself of the lies that her bullies told her before to be truth, that she is supposed to be ugly, that any person other than her father and jon telling her "she looks nice and ladylike" is meant to be taken as an insult and just lies. and it doesn't help that arya knows her friend dislikes highborns... and here come's gendry, a boy she considers her only true friend telling her exactly that and she assumes the worst of it.

i do think at this point of asos, gendry can clearly see that their friendship started to change, little bit by little bit to something more, he may not completely get it for what it is and i'm sure his feeling are all over the place and doing a number in his mind. but he gets the hang that this this it is something a bastard boy shouldn't be feeling for a northern princess. but at the same time, the boy is clearly smitten and he wants to let her know and maybe make her smile while they still have time to be with one another. he's just a child having fun, he's laughing, but actually gets to me is gendry starting to tickle arya, he wants to make her smile and laugh.

this is my interpretation and mine only but for me this scene it goes like this: gendry is trying to compliment arya ↠ arya takes it as an insult, gets angry and decides to leave ↠ gendry stops her but doesn't get the chance to say something before arya retaliates ↠ gendry falls to the floor but brings her with him ↠ arya starts punching him ↠ gendry starts laughing and is having fun, infuriating arya even more ↠ gendry decides to tickle arya to make her smile since for some reason giving her a compliment only made her mad and he just wants to see her smile.

Sterek AU: Stiles is starting to think it may not have been the best choice jumping into some stranger’s car while trying to avoid the Sheriff. This guy’s eyebrows are giving off definite serial killer vibes and he doesn’t seem to be responding well to Stiles natural wit and charm.

Luckily for Stiles, Derek almost definitely won’t kill him. When the Sheriff finds out that his son carjacked his new deputy however, it might be a different story (insp.)

I think it will be interesting once Sansa finds out that Arya Stark has married Ramsay Bolton. The reader knows it's actually Jeyne and not Arya but if the news of the wedding reach the Vale, Sansa will have to believe it's her actual sister who got married.

Of course Littlefinger could always inform Sansa about the truth - or part of it, since I doubt he will reveal his involvement or that the "fake Arya" is Sansa's childhood friend - and I believe he eventually will, but I also believe it's more possible for Sansa to find out about "Arya's" wedding from gossiping with Myranda than Littlefinger telling her.

I do wonder how the said news will affect Sansa. For all she knows her sister was considered dead to the world. And suddenly, she's not only alive but in a position similar to Sansa's: aka marrying into an enemy family of the Starks in order to be used for her claim to Winterfell.

I'd really like to read Sansa's point of view with her thoughts on this subject.
