Carmen Maria Machado on being an adjunct:

I don’t want to give away my expertise for so little. But I don’t want to stop teaching, and I don’t want my students to be afraid to reach out to me after we part, either—I don’t want them to do what I would have done. I thrive on their news: they’re heading to graduate school, or they’re submitting work to be published, or are publishing, or have a new project. I don’t only want to teach; I want teaching to be a career, something that I can afford to keep doing.

your wand has to choose you, as opposed to you choosing your wand. that’s what fashion is like, man. you gotta let it take control of you. you don’t know, sometimes it is stepping out of your own comfort zone, but it is what it is.

"Repeal Beer"

When Prohibition officially ended on December 5, 1933, booze peddlers large and small quickly did the legal thing and registered their products’ labels with the U.S. Patent Office. Here’s one aptly named product, to cash in on this “heady” time, registered with the Patent Office on March 6, 1934.

Trademark Application for Esslinger’s “Repeal Beer” Label, Case File 43336. 3/06/1934. NARA ID: 7788265
From the series: Case Files for Registered Product Labels , 1874 - 1940. Records of the Patent and Trademark Office, 1836 - 1978

(Today’s post comes via Alan Walker, an archivist in Research Services at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland.)

Celebrating the repeal of Prohibition, this Esslinger’s “Repeal Beer” label was registered with the Patent Office on March 6, 1934.  Coincidentally, March 6, 2015 is also when the National Archives’ latest exhibit, Spirited Republic: Alcohol in American History opens, featuring over 100 original alcohol and prohibition-themed items drawn from government records, including this label.

Watch for more #SpiritedRepublic items in future posts!

No Justice, No Peace (3/4/15): The full report of the Department of Justice’s investigation into the Ferguson Police Department has been released and it is nothing short of horrifying. Please take the time to read each screencap above, and if you can stomach more afterwords, read the full report. The above barely scrapes the surface of the indignities Ferguson PD inflicted on the people they were supposed to protect and serve. Ferguson PD is not unique. This is everyday terrorism faced by Black folks from the police, around the country. #staywoke #farfromover
