everyone loves asian people until they’re human beings

i feel like elaborating on this. people can only ever really imagine asians (and honestly most poc but since i’m asian this is what i feel comfortable with) as objects - specifically objects of desire. you’re an anime character, or a yaoi bishounen, or a kpop idol, or a label on some food, or a porn category, or, or, or. no matter what, you are something to be consumed. this also coincides really neatly with the perception of asia as a monolith - an asian (be they thai or tibetan or korean) is only that: asian. little thought is paid to culture or nationality or ethnicity (because surprise! asian countries have several ethnicities within their borders!). and again asians are interchangeable. you’ve heard the joke that all asians look alike, right? seen how people compare every asian person they see to their bias?

everyone fucking loves asians until it’s time to think about them as individuals, as separate groups, as actual people. the instant we go from fantasy to reality we lose out glitz and people turn their heads and look away. this gets to the point where even realistic portrayals of asian people are warped back into that little box for the purpose of selling to mass market - see peni parker! it... idk it sucks 💖 please examine the way you think about asians and asia

hi op! i hope you don’t mind me adding on, but this also factors into how little south asians are even considered in media. we don’t fit the neat little stereotype for what asian should be or look like. we can’t be anime characters or k-pop idols, so we don’t matter.

ive found that partially treated mental illness can sometimes look to uninvolved onlookers like faked mental illness.

"someone who really has pOCD would be disgusted and horrified at their intrusive thoughts" or maybe i'm in therapy & am going by the books, being radically ambivalent to my intrusive thoughts instead of wasting energy mentally washing my paws of sin. i'm not going to perform my rock bottom for you for the sake of being believed.

also like... something something, being afraid of healing because you're afraid of letting go of the stability of misery, letting go of the narrative you made up to feel worthy of attention, letting go of your "sympathy cred," this narrative has probably killed a few ppl.

The shapeshifters are fascinating from a character standpoint.

Perception of Laios:

  • Everyone has an exaggerated and flattened view of Laios, emphasizing his worst qualities.
  • They're at least somewhat aware of this fact, and their versions of Laios are completely incompatible.

Laios's perception of others:

  • He misses the details but has a better understanding of the other party members than they do of him.
  • His version of Marcille is the most accurate.
  • It's highly affected by recent events and idealized (the real Marcille is more careless than fake)
  • He's the only one capable of self-crit on the level to recognize his own flawed perspective

Perception of Marcille:

  • Nobody understands how her hair works.
  • Everyone knows it's important

Marcille's perception of others:

  • No understanding of other people's methods and tools due to hyperfocus on magic
  • Everyone is slightly exaggerated (Laios, more so, due to contrast with Falin)

Perception of Chilchuck:

  • Laios is the only one who really understands that Chilchuck is an adult

Chilchuck's perception of others:

  • Thinks everyone is a reckless idiot

Perceptions of Senshi

  • Everyone has a pretty good grasp on him as a character, even if some aspects are exaggerated or flattened out

Senshi's perception of others:

  • A lot more racist than he lets on

an underrated part of this beef is that metro boomin, the man who produced the across the spiderverse soundtrack and the Like That song that kickstarted this whole thing, and a producing legend in the hip hop community, made a beat called BBL drizzy and said anyone who can make a good rap to it gets the best for free.

i’ve never heard of a producer setting the mob during a beef. he’s got regular people making raps against drake. that’s actually insane to me.

Say what you want about the 2023 Shakespeare in The Park production of Hamlet, but the choices made in that play WORKED. Having Hamlet wear a black hoodie and camo pants and him dramatically putting his hood up when he was pissed off was inspired. Having Horatio video tape Claudius on an iPhone camera from the side of the stage during the play within the play was hilarious. Having the play within the play be a hip hop dance number that represented the murder!?! Fantastic. Having Ophelia be a singer before she went mad and having a beautiful voice that everyone loved to listen to and then seeing her singing get worse and worse as she got nearer to death?!?! Hamlet pulling out his iphone after killing Polonius to show his mom a picture of his dad compared to a picture of Claudius and angrily swiping back and forth between the two as he said “What judgement would step from this… to this?” The crowd fucking lost it every time. Horatio singing to Hamlet as he died made me fully sob every time. The way they did the ghost on stage was so chilling and I can’t even accurately describe it, you just had to be there. Hamlet being deeply exasperated the entire time was just perfect. Hamlet and Horatio had a secret handshake. Laertes inexplicably carried an acoustic guitar case for much of the play which was very funny but also hit you with the heartbreaking implication that he had used to play while Ophelia sang and he stopped carrying it after she died. It was peak teenage-angst-hamlet and it was so dear to me. PLEASE if anyone has a recording, send it to me.

OMG EVERYBODY LISTEN UP!!!

THEY'RE GOING TO BROADCAST THIS PRODUCTION ON PBC FOR FREE!! YOU CAN WATCH IT!! PLEASE DO!!!

Going to try to tag everybody who said they wanted to watch it in the notes:
