here are my biggest gaming hot takes:

- no game actually needs to run faster than 30 FPS

- no texture needs to be bigger than 2k, and most don’t need to be bigger than 1k (save for megatextures). A good chunk should actually be smaller than 1k

- lower poly counts > high poly counts

Once you pass a certain threshold, it doesn’t even affect the style of the game that much, and you’re just using exponentially more power to get exponentially smaller results

Like, for example, the original Skyrim was 4 GB. The remaster is 22 GB. That’s five-and-a-half times more space for the exact same content! The graphical improvements are honestly negligible, especially when you consider the massive leap in storage and RAM used.

These sorts of things just hit diminishing returns so quickly— My eyes can’t tell the difference between 1k and 4k textures.

We have so many fun ways to get the maximum mileage out of every pixel and every polygon. It’s sad to see those techniques slowly trickle away from big-budget games!

Even as storage space becomes less and less of a concern, there’s something satisfying about keeping everything as small and tidy as possible

Here's one of my own models as an example...

Here's the original sculpt, which consists of around 350k triangles:

Here's the retopology, which consists of around 14k triangles:

The visible differences are exceedingly minute, and if they really bother you, they can be fixed entirely with a normal map.

14k isn't a small number of triangles (though it is 25x less intensive than the original), but that's mostly due to my personal inexperience. A skilled 3D artist would be able to push it down much, much further and achieve the same result. I reckon that this model could have the same impact at 7k, and possibly even 2k.

(oh, and for the record, the texture is 1K)

In 6th generation games, the standard polycount for a whole character (with legs and clothes) was ~2k polygons.

Nowadays, a (major) character model can be anywhere from 100k to 350k triangles-- I have to wonder if companies are even bothering to retopologize at all!

If you want earnestness in art then sometimes it's going to be cringe and sometimes it's going to be pretentious

Thinking about this, still. You don't have to like everything out there, but if people aren't allowed to be cringe they'll never let themselves be overly authentic. If people are afraid of coming across as pretentious, they'll be afraid to take themselves seriously. And once you take that away, what's left are irony-poisoned works that don't really have anything to say

Sometimes people are mean, uncaring assholes, in which case you get to be mad. But sometimes you just need to communicate better. Try communication before you assume someone doesn't care!

Having someone who knows you on such a deep level that they see past your mask, or sense you need a check in is such a deep satisfying fantasy. It's up there with living in a cottagecore farm, or buying all your friends houses when you win the lottery. But you have to make peace with the fact that this is also a fantasy. It is unfair to expect people to "just know" when to respect your boundaries or to push them.

Being cared for is not a fantasy. But you have to let people know you need it. And you have to understand that sometimes they will let you down. Just like you totally could live in a cute farm, but you still have to shovel shit, and the crops sometimes die anyway. Or maybe you win the lottery, but you still have to manage your money and learn real estate law.

The fantasy isn't the caring, the fantasy is not having to do the work. And it sucks. It's embarrassing. But like the meme says, it's not rotten if it's YOU. So do it for yourself.

Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like it’s from a shield. If it’s hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.

And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isn’t there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!

So what is a rain shadow?

Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.

Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.

May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as there’s no scale bar and it’s all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. I’ve only just started playing with it but it’s SO FUN.

I actually know the answer to this Why The Mountains Are Like That for Lord of the Rings. Basically like half of the mountain ranges in that setting were raised up by the Maiar (godlike figures) after the creation of the world specifically to serve as bulwarks against each other. The mountains are square in Mordor because Melkor literally made that place to be a fortress for himself (he also made the volcano I think). At one point like half the main continent gets sunk into the sea as well due to the conflict between these entities. Oh, and god straight up changes the earth from flat to a globe.

So honestly, there's a good chance that at point the map of Arda made more sense, but then the LOTR version of Satan monkeyed around with the landscape quite a bit.

Tags are fantastic, and if you’re on the fence about reading the books please know Eomer finds her before the battle ends in the original, and thinking she is dead goes absolutely feral on the enemy.
