Full GQ Interview with Mario & Marco

GQ: Mr. Reus, Mr. Götze, the whole world believes that you have been friends for ages, because you both were at BVB in your youth. But you, Mr. Reus, are older than Mario Götze, so you two never played together in one of the youth teams of Dortmund. So, when did you actually meet? Marco: I think it was 2009. Mario: Yes, we met the first time at the national team, not in Dortmund. We ran across each other a couple of times, not more. GQ: Football reporter often talk about “blind trust” on the pitch between you, but you only play together for Borussia Dortmund since this season. What is “blind trust”? Marco: When you’re on the pitch, you realize who’s an intellingent player and who behaves. If they recognize situations before they happen. Mario always know where I am. It just happens. GQ: But don’t you have to actually know a player for a long time and studied his movements? Mario: This helps, but it’s not necessary. As a footballer, you put yourself in the situation of the other players instinctively and you ask yourself: What would I do if I were him? Marco often makes what I would do too. That’s what I would call “blind trust”: You think the same. GQ: Does it help when you are friends off the pitch? Or is there blind trust between you and players who are, in your opinion, idiots in private life too? Marco: This is certainly possible, in theory. Mario: Probably, yeah. But it’s definitely an advantage, when you get along well in general. GQ: Are real friendships in football possible at all? As a player you’re your own small business enterprise that has to make the best out of itself during the next 10-15 years. Marco: You don’t think like that. In every team there are people you like and people you don’t like that much. Just as there are people you get along well on the pitch but never would do anything privately. In any normal company it will be similar. GQ: And you never think about to not invest to  much in a friendship - altrough it’s quite possible that you will soon no longer play in the same team because of possible transfers? Marco: You don’t think about that also. When there really is a friendship, then you phone or just write with each other. You would do this with friends who have to move away for work reasons too. Götze: The best example is André Schürrle. He plays for Leverkusen but we are close friends anyway. We basically meet only at the national team, but I always know what’s going on in his life. Of course every professional footballer goes his own way and nobody knows where it will lead. When a player moves to another county, it’s of course much more difficult to stay in touch. Nuri Sahin is a good example. He helped me a lot when I came to the pros. And the he moved to Real Madrid and was suddenly gone. Marco: But you aren’t mad at anybody. Nuri is now back in Dortmund and when you’re watching them, Mario and him, you feel like their relationship is the same as before.

GQ: Is there any difference between a friendship of footballers and, let’s say, civilians? Mario: Sure, you celebrate victorys together and be upset about defeats. Of course you’re really close to each other in that case.  GQ: Is it maybe reversed a much bigger problem to explain what happens in your life to a friend who never played football in front of 80.000 fans? Mario: It’s not that extreme, longtime friends where already there when you haven’t played in so large arenas. But anyway, the friendship with Marco is something different: You’re in the same situation, in our lives are many things equal. This helps a lot dealing with each other, also on other issues than football. When you need a piece of advice, for example.  GQ: Were there any situations in which Marco helped you in making an important descision, Mario?  Mario: Nah, neeeeverrr!  Marco: Na, na?  GQ: Did you Mr. Reus? Marco: I’m not sure, I don’t know, really.   GQ: You are 3 years older, Mr. Reus Therefore you have to be the experienced one.  Mario: But he acts like he’s 12.  Marco: That’s true, sometimes I’m still like a 12 year old. But seriously: We talk about many things,  exchanges our opinions, but in the end you make your own descision. Of course you ask your friend: “How would you do it, what do you think?” That’s normal. GQ: Was there a particular situation where you noticed: it fits, he’s just like me? Marco: Juuuustin. Mario: Juuuuuustin! GQ: Justin? Mario: Marco is a crazy Justin Bieber fan. I’m nothing against him.  Marco: What?! That’s rubbish.  Mario: You even sing the songs and know the lyrics. I don’t!  GQ: You know Justin Biebers lyrics by heart, Mr. Reus? Marco: Of course. I always sing, almost every song. Whether in the car or at home. Music’s running everywhere. In the locker room as well. And most important: Not only Justin Bieber! GQ: You listen in the BVB locker room to Justin Bieber on Saturdays? Mario: Yeah, just for fun. We are all very young, therefore we probably listen to some other music than other teams.  GQ: And what connects you two, except Justin Bieber and football? Marco: When we met at the national team, our chemistry was perfect. That we listen to the same music helps, but is not that important.  Mario: We already spend extremly much time together because of our jobs. It’s obvious that it’s getting very fast very intensive, when you get along well with each other. And when you’re at home, there are all the other persons: your family and your other friends who have nothing to do with football.  GQ: How many friends do you have beyond the football world?  Mario: 2 or 3 good friends. I grew up with them and we still have a very close friendship. Marco and I quickly developed a different relationship by common experiences. It’s easy for me to tell him what bothering me. Not only professional things, private things too. There are not many people with whom I speak so openly like I do with Marco.  GQ: Is there also competition between you? Don’t you need to be ambitious by nature as a top sportsman?  Mario: But what should we measure?  GQ: You both are always compared through Lionel Messi from the media, for example. Sometimes one, sometimes the other. Do you argue about who is more often called the next Messi? Or are such comparisons absurd?  Marco: Lionel Messi is the best footballer on earth. This guy is a maschine. Of course he plays for an outstanding team and some of his goals seems easy, but they’re not. Barcelona has a special philosophy and thus every comparison is rubbish.

GQ: In the champions league you have prevailed with Dortmund this season against similar teams. Does it feels it f*cking good? Mario: Sure thing! That’s what you wanna archieve your whole life - being one of the best. Who doesn’t seek it has the wrong profession.  GQ: Is there such a moment when you suddenly realize: This is what I have always dreamed of, and now the time has come, I arrived - I can keep up with the big boys, even defeat them? Mario: The situation is actually suddenly. It just happens. You don’t think about what you had dreamed about someday. You’re looking forward. You grow with the  requirements. When I was 15 years old, I didn’t wanted anything else than play in a stadium. Now I do it every week, it has become the norm. In this case, you always have to look at what you have. And appreciate that. Marco: Absolutely. Mario: As a player you think about what successes you could celebrate. You think: It’s not enough, I wanna make the next step. GQ: Did you, Mr. Götze, thought about the downsides of football during your protracted injury last year?  Mario: Yes. Everything actually ran the way I always had imagined since the national youth team. The injury last year was the first one that has set me back. It was a shock. However, by this stage I got a different view of the important things. GQ: You, Mr. Reus, had to cope with setbacks earlier. You left the BVB youth team when you were 16 years old, because you got no operating time. So you moved to Rot-Weiss Ahlen. Marco: This wasn’t a setback for me. Not everybody is good enough to manage the direct leap from the youth team to the professional team. Mario managed it, Nuri too.  Mario: You have to remember what the situation was in Dortmund. The BVB had to put on the own youth team a few years ago, due to the difficult financial situation of the club, and that was precisely the time when I was on the go. What helped me. At Marcos time it was otherwise.  Marco: I left the BVB because I wanted to play. There is no point to stay at Dortmund and only sit on the bench. That’s why I decided to take a different way. It has been found that it was right for me. Since then it everything went steadily  upwards step by step, from Ahlen to Mönchengladbach, from there back to Dortmund. Luckily I stayed healthy.  GQ: How much do you fear a large injury? Or don’t you even think about it? Marco: You don’t have to waste your mind on it. Otherwise you’re maybe act differently on the pitch, inhibited. Instead we do everything to strengthen our bodies and muscles, to prevent injuries.  GQ: We can see it on your bodies. What is vanity to you two? Obviously your appearance is very important to you.  Marco: Oh yeeeeees! (slaps Mario’s thigh, points finger on him) Now I’m curious what’s coming!  GQ: Mr.Reus, do you wanna answer for Mr. Götze?  Mario: But I’m not vain at aaaall!  Marco: Mario is… how should I say this? Everybody wants to look their best and thus tries out different things. Especially  when it comes to hair.  Mario: He’s only speaking for himself. GQ: Where is still potential to improve about your appearance? Mario: The beard has to grow. Marco: Exactly, the beard! But: He already looks really good. *laughs* Mario: Everybody is a little bit vain. Marco and me just care about how we look. But not about every detail, that’s not important.  Marco: When it comes to vanity, there’s no difference between footballers and regular men. But I think Mario and I know what’s really important in life, and that’s not the hairstyle, of course.

i just read your post about gotzeus and i agree people are not talking about this enough! and now i'm thingking about this, marco really stares at the camera several times during the game. like, i never saw he so aware of it in any other games even tho if mario was on his way to padderborn any of them could be sure if he would be able to watch, but the feels!!!!! can you imagine mario standing up from the chair during his the goal? how adorable!!!!

omg YES

we know for a fact mario watched dortmund playing and apparently he was by himself??? the hotel room/bedroom/wherever he was, was pretty much empty and he also mentions in his tweet that he’ll be watching a tv show later on and getting focused on the match against paderborn, the next day. So a relaxed night in for mario.

EDIT:

Someone brought to my attention i’ve got mario’s tweet time wrong. He tweeted it at 9:22, so obviously, after the match started. Which doesn’t mean of course mario hasn’t sent a text message to marco or even called him wishing the best luck and commented he’d be watching the match.

now, mario tweeted this at 1:32pm (German time) and bvb’s match only started at 8:30pm.. let’s not forget that mario ends the tweet with ‘Have a nice evening!’ I mean it’s freaking 1:30 in the afternoon!!!! He’s either trying to get marco to see it really bad or he’s making sure all of his fans know about the match and tune in to support bvb.. Either way I like it. Another interesting fact is that Mr. Social Media Gotze only posted that on twitter and let’s face it, marco hasn’t showed any activity on instagram in more than a week now, while he favorited some tweets only 3 days ago on twitter.

And you know what? I actually think marco knew mario was watching and just like the anon, very well, pointed out, marco was acting a bit off while on camera. Like suddenly he became very aware of the cameras in the stadium.

This is also something I had discussed with elany. Let’s face it, marco reus is not comfortable in front of cameras, he gets shy, fidgety and very self-conscious. So that’s why some people noticed his head on stare to the camera while celebrating his goal with the team, like he’s literally looking right through as if to the other side.

so marco either has something to tell the camera guy? or he’s looking at someone who is watching him on television?

of course it can all be a huge coincidence and marco is doing this for someone else but cmon let’s get real here

Your blog is just awesome. ♥ Marco and Mario are so cute, I love them so much! But I think that Mario really loves Marco more! Even blind one can see it. Marco didn't show his love often but Mario's love is stronger that's for sure! :-) I'm still not over yesterday's match against Scotland. Mario goes to Marco and then imidietly call the doctors and he definitely was about to slap the scottish man. :-D I'm really big fan of Spain NT but those 2 became my favourites along with the Spanish!

Thank you so much! And omg I also love Spain NT!And for your Gotzeus theory I don't know what to answer, I mean I don't agree, but that's your opinion :)
