NOT SHIT is a zine that wants to teach you how to SK8 like the pros!
Haha not really (thank god)
Story time.
I think it was the summer before 5th grade when I made it my “summer goal” to learn how to skate. It was like 1999 and all the boys I was crushing on knew how to skate and I wanted to hang out with them and plus, it looked like fun!
Well, I never got past dicking around on the driveway with my Costco board and now I’m 27, but I’m sure glad I ran across this zine because it’s never too late to start. The thing about starting, though, is it’s often discouraging because unless you’re some kind of amazing inter-dimensional dream demon who is good at everything immediately, you’re probably going to suck for a while. This, again, is okay. Just remember:
Bad at skating? Who Cares! Good at skating? Who cares!
No, there are some seriously kick-ass collages in here.
NOT SHIT #02 has FAQ’s and answers for beginning skaters, photos, personal stories, a how-to for making grip tape art by Kat Sy, and interviews with skaters/musicians/stuff-doers like Charles Buckner, Sima, Cheri Musrasrik and others you’ve probably heard of because you’re probably cooler than me (don’t get too excited now, it’s not that hard to be cooler than me).
One of my favorite parts, though, is this “Songs to Skate to” spread by Brie Goldstein, Illustrated by Jessica Milton.
Here’s the playlist because it’s good and my phone takes crap pictures:
1. Tuhoava Voima - Paa Kii
2. Butcher Baby - The Plasmatics
3. I am a Poseur - X-Ray Spex
4. Pogo Machine - The Registrators
5. Rules and Regulations - Fuzzbox
6. My Baby Loves Crime - The Gizmos
7. We’re Having Much More Fun - X
8. Quiero Ser Santa - Paralisis Permanente
9. Carry Home - The Gun Club
10. Sk8 - The Spits
They also released a volume 3 earlier this year and have volume 4 coming out this summer. You can get all the info, plus get your very own copy of their current issue, on their tumblr.
thanks for this cool as hell review!
trying to get my shit together to scan issue#2 and #3 to be free 99 on the internet. keep your eyeballs wide open for issue 4 to hit the streets at the end of summer- this issue will hopefully be distributed a little more widely this time around! if you and i already have a trade in progress and you’re expecting some mail from me, im sorry its so late and i promise itll get to you in this lifetime.
