Happy Birthday, Emily!
Remember this 1971 stamp from Lenore Tawney’s postcard?
Today, December 10, is the 185th anniversary of Emily Dickinson’s birth. While the primary association with Dickinson is her shut-in tendencies, the second (perhaps surprising those who only got as far as the first) is her prolific correspondence, even by the standards of her time (1830-1886).
About one thousand Dickinson letters are known to exist, addressed to about one hundred different friends and family members. Scholars estimate that this is only a fraction of the letters the poet actually wrote, as it was customary to burn a person’s letters upon his/her death.
