what is it about fungi that’s so mythical and freaky and set in humanities heads as “fable and Other Folk” fodder

the lore

the vibes

the spooky feeling in the Ghosts and Aliens Section of my brain that goes off

like, look at this and tell me that magic isn’t real and doesn’t want to strip us bare and use our souls as bartering chips in cosmic games of poker

mushrooms are an ancient force of growth and decay, life and rot, collapse and creation; they have been here long before us and will remain long after we’re gone- devouring that which kills us and creating that which forgets us.

it is best you tread carefully.

I’m studying biotech and every time someone brings up mushrooms our current professor will look either extremely exited or pained and go “listen.. mushrooms are neither plants nor animals nor something in between. They elude all attempts to categorize them. We do not know what they are. Some are immortal. Some produce live saving substances. Some are so closely related to humans that eating them may cause an allergic reaction against your own body. I cannot teach you about the mushrooms”

But the mushroom can. Trust the mushroom. It Knows.

Please Help

So my stepdad kicked me out because my disability paperwork hasn’t gone though yet, which to him means that I’m just ‘slacking’. I have nowhere to stay and if I take the car to go sleeping in it, there’s no doubt in my mind he’ll report it as stolen.

I don’t even care about the cost of my meds anymore, I just need a warm place to sleep. I don’t care about anything else, I just need somewhere where I won’t freeze to death in the coming weeks.

I’m so fucking sorry for having to beg for money like this like a piece of shit but I don’t know what else to do.

Again, I’m so sorry for having to beg and just... fuck I don’t know what else to do. I’m so sorry.

So... I’ve been able to get a roof over my head but that’s about it. I have no other resources or money other than what meager bs I can scrounge up for rent Please help if you can 💜

Books have been invaluable sources of information for centuries. For those who study the colonial era, the Aztec codices are some of the only resources about Aztec culture. Some contain the Aztec language, called Nahuatl, and almost all display a marked difference from contemporary European texts in their heavy use of images rather than words to convey meaning.

This limited edition facsimile of the Codice Veitia, published in 1986, details the Aztec calendar and ceremonies. The original 1755 manuscript resides in the Royal Palace of Madrid, and was itself made by copying an older codex called the Codex Ixtlilxóchitl (1550).

don’t ever let anyone make you feel ashamed for not going down a conventional path (e.g. not finishing college or starting college later in life, doing an internship in your late 20s, not having a "career” by a certain age). all of this is arbitrary. do not create a life that aims to satisfy everyone but yourself. you worked hard as fuck to get to where you are. don’t you dare let others including yourself diminish those efforts. you do not deserve that. especially if you did it all while battling mental illness.

People need to leave religious scientists alone

Some people will - completely unprovoked, unasked and uninformed beyond whatever D*wk*ns et al drooled on them - launch into looong threads about how religion and science are “incompatible” because “logic wins” or whatever and they want to be purposefully controversial it’s so pointless and stupid and annoying.

It’s even more annoying when they demand “proof” from religious people that God exists. You’re a scientist. Look at the universe and the natural world around you. What more are you expecting?

Computational Thermodynamics

I am interested in learning more about computational thermodynamics and I am wondering if anyone can recommend some resources. I have looked a little online but there are a large number of textbooks and I want to make sure I get a good one.

Thanks!

Also being a scientist pretty much gives you a free pass to be as eccentric as you want like you’ll be at a conference and it’s like “is that guy wearing socks and sandals and plaid pants???” “Ya but he was on the team that discovered gravitational waves let him be”

How To Get A Job Fast As Hell

 @owenabbott

  • Apply to a  job, wait (1) day, then call.  Give them your first and last name. Tell them you submitted an application and that you’re very motivated to find [Enter field name] work. Let the conversation lead you wherever it takes. Be very polite. Say” thank you for your time, I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you.” Rinse, repeat. This is to force them to be looking out for your application.
  •  When you get to the interview, shake their hand firmly,  tell them your first and last name.
  • Describe your experiences  as “ two years transcription and data entry” if you have a desk job interview and “ [however many years]  costumer service, retail and stock” for your retail jobs.
  • Don’t use job “ buzz words” I stg they hear them all day. Say  things like, “ I’m detail oriented and am very good at taking instruction.”  “ I would like to work for a company with integrity and I feel that [ company name] would be a good fit”
  • When they ask you if you have “reliable transportation” say  YES. don’t tell them what kind of transportation, just say yes. (if you don’t do this, you wont get the job , I’m telling you right now).
  • Research the company. Know what they do, why they do it, how OLD the company is. WHERE it was founded, and what kind of position you’re intending to apply for.
  • When they ask you “ give us a situation where you had to blah blah blah” Make one the fuck up. Make yourself sound good as hell, and like you put your company’s needs slightly above the customer’s needs, but make the customer happy.
  • If they ask you about being outgoing, Say you “like to focus on your work so you can concentrate on doing things right” (which buys you out of having to act friendly all the time)

Questions for after the interview:

1.  Does this position offer upward mobility?

2. Do you enjoy working for the company? (if you’re not interviewing for a temp agency who will send you anywhere)

  •  Then, shake their hand,  Ask them to repeat their name (REMEMBER THIS) say thank you for your time, wish them a nice day and leave. write their name down outside if you have to, just remember the fuck out of it.
  • AFTER your interview, send a card directed to the name of the person who interviewed you (I’ll give you them) that says “Thank you for the interview, I appreciate the opportunity. have a great day” This shows  that you have an understanding of professionalism, and will have them thinking of you kindly (or at least remembering you) when they’re shuffling through the choices.
  • DO NOT tell them you just moved to the city over the phone.  In person, tell them you just moved to the city. Make it sound like the only reason you need a job is because you moved. Not because you’re desperate.
