โ€œitโ€™s going to be WW3!!โ€ no bitch itโ€™s going to be vietnam, korea, afghanistan, itโ€™s going to be another war wherein the US commits unspeakable and indefensible acts against a severely weakened people seeking self determination. itโ€™s going to be another war where protesting is criminalized and โ€œfreedom of speechโ€ is gutted in the interest of pushing propaganda. itโ€™s going to be another nation of people added to the long list of victims of US imperialism and another demonstration of the strong undercurrent of fascism running through the foundation of america

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I canโ€™t just โ€˜buy it.โ€™ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. Theyโ€™re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.

For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. Itโ€™s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: itโ€™s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.

The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available โ€˜copiesโ€™ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we arenโ€™t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I canโ€™t pay to own it, I wonโ€™t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.

So yes, Iโ€™m going to pirate and support piracy.

Addendum: This is also a really good reason to support trust-busting. A lot of this obnoxious behavior is only possible because corporations wield monopoly power.

another addendum: most modern (4K UHD) blurays use a form of online DRM that requires the player software to access a server to get title specific decryption keys. you don't really own a film on one of those disks any more than you do on streaming, the only way to truly preserve it is to rip off the disks or from streaming, not even the physical media you can "buy" can necessarily be preserved anymore.

PIRACY ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE MEDIA PRESERVATION

i agree that itโ€™s shitty to give peopleโ€™s data to โ€œAIโ€ companies without their explicit consent, but also i feel like people are blowing the consequences of it out of proportion, or at least focusing on the wrong problem. posting any kind of art online has always opened you up to the possibility of real people stealing your shit, and thatโ€™s a hundred times more damaging to you, personally, than whatever slop a machine could algorithmically generate using data combed from countless different sources. the actual dangers of โ€œAIโ€ โ€” such as creative jobs being replaced by machines โ€” are highly systemic and tied into the capitalist hellscape we live under, and flattening that into individualist struggles concerning โ€œplagiarismโ€ is counterproductive and distracts from addressing the real issues in an actual material way.

You know a thing about mp100 that makes me ridiculously emotional. The fact that Serizawa is treated so goddamn kindly by the story. As far as I can remember, there's never a joke made at his expense about how he didn't go outside for so long, or the fact that he's just starting school back up again, or anything even remotely along those lines. There's some comedy on the side of him having no clue how to socialize, but it's never mean spirited at him. Adults in manipulative relationships aren't given much sympathy a lot of the time, and an adult who hadn't finished school getting kindness from the story is just unheard of but. Serizawa is treated so kindly. He goes back to school and it's not haha funny, it's "damn! Good for him!" Him being a shut in for so many years is treated as "wow, he was going through it." It's not him being stupid for being manipulated and he's allowed to come back from it. He's allowed to be happy. He's not the haha funny comic relief. He's just a dude who fucked up. They let him be happy.

Also! Him stopping going to school is treated kindly as well! It's him having a horrific time due to being an esper, it's not him being stupid, it's treated as "he desperately needed help and nobody knew how to give it to him", he's never faulted for it. The narrative is so fucking kind to its characters and it's just...so nice to see. I love Seri so much guys you have no idea.
