Recently released in late 2013, the sonically powerful album “AM” by the indie rock group Arctic Monkey is a hard-hitting piece that conjures up sleazy, drunken nights spent boozing away all past regrets and lamenting lost loves. In an interview with Altimate DJ Mimosa Dvortsky aka Simulation No 1 and trusty Rad Faltern DJG, both ladies agree that listening to this slinky concept album makes them feel “more badass than the normal camel rider.”
When pressed to elaborate on this strange, foreign feeling, DJG could only respond with a high-pitched, squealing noise almost imperceptible to human hearing. Simulation No 1 sympathetically fans her face while repeating that the bass intro to “Do I Wanna Know” makes her feel “some type of way. It’s almost as if the bass lines pump my heart for me.”
DJG recovers long enough to comment: “The electric guitar features solidify and become this raw, cutting sound that’s not afraid to really rip into the old Arctic Monkeys’ music that we are familiar with. It’s a commanding sound one that makes me feel like being swallowed alive by the gritty night streets of Los Angeles.”
However, in wonderful contrast to this almost-angry sound are tracks ironically titled such as “Mad Sound” that showcase Alex Turner’s classic crooning. On the softer side, these fantastically crooned ballads both break the heart and stomp on all the pieces.
Unfortunately at this point in the interview it appears that DJG has passed out, so unfortunately we had to cut it short, but in a final statement, Mimosa tearfully admits that AM was the gateway to her secret night life. “The album has a very hypnotic red lipstick, bad-girl aesthetic, and it’s helped me realize what I’ve truly wanted to be in life— a pinup doll for the UCLA Rad Retros. After a ritualistic listening to AM while applying very liberal makeup, DJG and I go into the night as a couple of badass babes that no one wants to mess with. And I think I like this feeling.”
