im really sorry i dont want to be offensive but, isn’t otherkin like.. a delusion / part of psychotic symptoms? Or possibly dissociation? Can someone explain the difference to me? I’m honestly just asking because i don’t understand very well. and it makes me nervous. so if someone could list the differences that would be really helpful and calming! :) I just want to understand, because somehow otherkin currently kind of.. trigger me? Like they trigger delusions in me?

most of them are basically just roleplaying and lying about the intensity of their experiences, so, that’s what you can compare it to (RPing without a disclaimer).

there are people on here who have mental issues but they typically have that noted somewhere on their blog if they want people here to know about it. and they too can choose to be otherkin, so. it can get complicated where their issues end and otherkinnery begins. if you can’t handle that then it’s best to just not follow them. maybe you can note it on your own blog that certain types of blogs/people make you uneasy, so they know what to expect of you.

I know this isn’t a comprehensive answer to what you asked, but I just wanted to point out that otherkinnery itself isn’t a mental illness, for most of them it’s a choice (a choice to claim that it wasn’t a choice for them, but whatever, that’s called lying and not psychosis). Besides RPing you could also compare it to Neo-Paganism.

I thought about this a bit while laying trying to fall asleep. If a transman is sexually attracted to women would you call him a lesbian, or heterosexual? He’d be hetero, right? Because his body may (or may not if it’s pre transition) be male, but he isn’t. It’s just accepted that what you see, isn’t what you get.

So now looking at people who are trans-species (therians and otherkin). Does it seem more natural for someone who feels they are a nonhuman animal inside to be attracted to their own species, or that of their body? It seems to me, from what I’ve seen, zoosexuality is much more prevalent in these communities than others, and for good reason. The people in them aren’t human. So then for someone who is, in all but body, nonhuman to have sex with a human, wouldn’t that be considered bestiality? In some ways even more so than if they had intimate relations with their own species.

Does it even make sense to call someone who is nonhuman zoosexual? They’re just attracted to their own kind, like normal people are. The difference being that their body doesn’t match what their kind is.

(edited to fix a typo)]

This person compares otherkin issues to trans issues. In an incredibly disrespectful and also simply wrong way. Yeah, yeah, we’ve seen that before. But they also compare sleeping with a trans person to bestiality. Like???

Also, they seem to think being otherkin should give them the right to sleep with an animal; because as otherkin people they’re not human, so if they were to sleep with a human that would be bestiality.

They have tons of ‘reason why zoophilia is okay’ posts on their blog, in addition to this bs. Kind of scary, if you ask me.

i was going to make a joke about how disgusted i am but this isn’t even slightly funny. i’m honestly appalled. otherkin are human, bratty selfish self-centred disrespectful humans until proven otherwise, and by that i mean some can be proven sensible. they are absolutely and unequivocally human and i can’t believe i have to say this: FUCKING ANIMALS IS WRONG. DON’T FUCKING ABUSE ANIMALS.

don’t even get me started on the whole “trans people are animals” thing. i hope the person that posts this bullshit falls down a flight of stairs and like, slips a disc or something. - hazel

I feel so bad because whenever I see another person who shares a kintype with me I panic and begin to loose grip of reality and call them fake, which I don't mean to do, and I feel so bad I don't mean to do that and u know its a shitty thing to do but I can't bring myself to change but I want to!! But I can't, because if I try I just get disoriented and when someone calls others out on this I get even more disoriented to a point of suicidal and I want to change but I can't???????

thats okay!!!! i meant, if someone calls others fake for the sake of being mean. im sorry if it came across wrong. i have a similar reaction to seeing people with the same kintype as me, thinking that theyre not “really” their kintype and going into a panic. youve TRIED to change, and thats what’s important!!! i probably should have specified i mean people who do it for the sake of being like “Im the best and no one can be like me bc i dont want them to” not “i physically cannot do this”

while some poc in the community are fine with it, there are a lot that are really hurt by people (esp white people) being kin with a character of another race, and it's not our job to decide that that doesn't matter and continue doing this thing that hurts people (also their reasoning for why it's racist stands firm so, that's more reason to work on transferring kin feelings to something that's okay and not continue doing this thing) there are ways to transfer it and I could give advice on that

oh!!! thank you!!!

yes the advice on transferring kin feelings would be really good.

um umm! imm really worried,, could you please help me out? ookay so;; recently one of my favorite blogs made a post about how they didnt want anyone kinning with their ocs,, bc it made them panic and i had just started gaining kinfeels with one of her ocs before they wrote that but now im so worried. i dont want to make her panic and ive gotten so much hate about this and i just. cant control the kinfeels? i dont. know what to do...

okay, so i don’t want to wait for forever to respond to this one even though i’m still waiting for forever to respond to the other messages and post them and stuff.

but i understand that its really hard and even sometimes impossible to control kinfeels but i think the best thing you could do is just,, keep the kinfeels to yourself. i’ve done that before multiple times for varying reasons. even if you feel the kinfeels and know you’re kin to the character, just don’t really tell anyone and kind of keep it to yourself. i know that’s not the best advice i could give but it keeps them from not panicking which is always good!! you dont really deserve the hate for it though because you can’t help it and you didn’t know this stuff would make them panic until now!! just don’t list that you’re kin to the character or publicly say you are or talk about it and stuff, and you should be fine!!!!

What Fictionkin (and otherkin) experience

(The following is an excerpt from the first draft of my upcoming book on fictionkin)

Fictionkin have experiences and feelings that set them apart from the rest of the world, often even at a very young age. Many of us have known that we were somehow different from others since we were small children, though we lacked the words to properly describe how we were different.

Homesickness

One of the heaviest and most common experiences fictionkin share is one of homesickness. Most people know what feeling homesick is like, but can you imagine feeling homesick in your own town? Your own house, room, or even bed? This is a very real phenomenon for kin, and almost all of us have experienced it. Empty, melancholy longing. Feeling out of place, and out of time. Feeling like we don’t belong even in the place where we were born and raised.

It’s one of the subtlest, most basic, and also most heart wrenching things that kin go through, and it can be near ever present. It can be hard to describe too, not knowing just what you’re missing. Just knowing that something is wrong. Just wanting to go *home* and, before we know what it means to be fictionkin, not knowing where home is.

Gender and/or Species Dysphoria

Another trait many fictionkin share is the experience of feeling as though they are trapped in the wrong body. This can manifest itself in any number of ways, depending on what their spirit ‘expects’ their body to look and feel like.

Kin with spirits that were nonhuman may feel ill at ease walking on two legs, or feel like there are too many or too few teeth in their mouth. They may expect to have limbs that they not, or even feel like they have too many limbs altogether. They may feel like some of their senses are too dull or too sharp.***

Kin with spirits that are human, or close to human may experience dysphoria with things like height, gender, or eyecolor. Many kin feel too tall, or too short, looking at the world from the wrong perspective. Likewise, informal studies and polls in the kin community show that the overwhelming majority of fictionkin consider themselves transgender or on the transgender spectrum.

Supertasters: Some people who are kin to creatures with different experiences of the sense of taste may be supertasters as humans.Supertasting is a documented phenomenon in humans where certain foods and drinks that most people enjoy are intensely bitter or disgusting to a small minority, because they are able to taste underlying chemicals and elements that others can not.The cause of this ability sense is scientifically unknown.

Supernumerary Phantom Limbs

Normal phantom limbs the experience of having feeling and sensation in a limb despite that limb no longer being there. Kin experience supernumerary phantom limbs (also sometimes called Astral Limbs) which are sensations in limbs that were never present on their body in the first place- at least not in their human body.

Kin who have experienced alien or animal bodies often feel the phantom sensations of wings, tails, tentacles, etc. When they can feel these limbs they have a sense of where they are positionally, and may be able to ‘touch’ things with them, and feel heat or roughness, etc. They also may be able to feel when someone ‘touches’ their limbs, or pain if they for instance, get shut in a drawer.

Birthmarks, Scars, and wound pain

Related to phantom limbs, some kin experience unexplained pain or ‘scars’ at the site of wounds that they received in their other lives. As is often theorized to be the case in reincarnation, many kin believe that birthmarks are the remnants of the physical injuries that killed them in another life.

Many kin also experience unexplained pain, or discomfort at the sites of mortal wounds or other large injuries. Pain in lost limbs, or at the site of stab wounds, blurred or other vision problems for those who lost an eye, etc.***

Whether you believe it is kin related or not, if you experience chronic pain or other mysterious symptoms, you should always have them evaluated by a doctor.

Consistent Memories (Visions/Dreams)

Another extremely common and potent kin phenomena is the experience of kin memories. These usually come in the form of potent dreams or ‘visions’ (like normal waking memories). They are snatches of experience from another life. Often memories are visual or audial, but they can also be smells, sounds, or physical feelings.

Kin memories don’t connect with any memories or experiences that the kin has from this lifetime. They are completely from outside this world, and unexplainable. Because of this, they are often very distressing to people who don’t know that they are kin yet, because they seem like they must be hallucinations or suppressed memories.

Kin memories are often vague, and are also often traumatic or tragic, simply because upsetting events can be more memorable than pleasant ones. Memories often tend to be ‘triggered’ by something- either by a similar experience in this world, or by coming in contact with something that in fiction reminds the kin of the memory. The most potent trigger for memories is of course, coming in contact with the story that a fictionkin is ‘from’.

Unexplained fears or urges

Some kin experience unexplained mental hang ups that are related to their other lives. These can include both positive and negative feelings and impulses. For example, a fictionkin who had drowned in their other life might have a phobia of the ocean, or unexplained desire to avoid water. A fictionkin who was a concert violinist might be powerfully drawn to violin music, or even have a natural and inexplicable talent for it.

‘Missing’ Abilities

Like unexplained urges, some fictionkin also experience problems with ‘missing abilities’. This is when a kin feels like there is something they should be able to do, but can not. The kin might, especially when younger, reflexively attempt to call on that ability, and be profoundly confused when it doesn’t work. Some examples are kin who were spellcasters might attempt to make light with a certain gesture, or kin who canine might attempt to track people by their smell.

Hey, I'm Thor. I'm literally a god, but I think I have a kintype? I don't know how I could have a kintype. How could a god have a past life? I know clearly that I came straight from Asgard to this system, and rather recently, to act as a protector. What are some other reasons to be kin other than past lives..?

there’s lots of reasons for why someone could identify as otherkin despite lack of belief in past lives.

it could have to do with souls, ancestry, symbolic metaphor, religion, or just a congenital condition: it’s just a way of being.

for instance, all of the members in our system are otherkin. for some of us, that relates to their individual identities in the system (they literally are x, their body is x, their identity is otherkin because they are x). for others, it’s because of the shape of their souls. for others, it’s the character of their souls.

Hello! I recently discovered I am bunnykin and was super happy to find another kin at my uni! She is kin with several animals, also deerkin. She told me about astral limbs and that she can feel her antlers. Me, beeing kin with a small animal, feel often intimidated by her and sometimes I feel like she pushes me unintentionally with her antlers. How can I tell her to be more careful around me with her astral limbs or is it just my imagination? :

i have heard of some otherkin being sensitive to others’ astral limbs, yes! it’s not the most common thing and i haven’t personally experienced it but it may not be just your imagination

so long as you’re kind about it, she shouldn’t mind giving you a little bit more space! maybe even phrase it half-jokingly, so it doesn’t come across wrong? something like “i am only a small bunny and you are a large deer” or “oof, you’re skewering me!” said in a lighthearted tone can be enough to make someone back off a little while still finding it friendly and ok in conversation

(both examples are things friends of mine have actually said to me in conversation irl, and neither were upsetting at all, which is why i suggest them here. of course, you should feel free to come up with something on your own that better fits how you interact with her if need be!)
