there is so much about modern queer discourse that could be fixed simply by understanding "straightness" to be a socio-political classification & reward for conformity rather than just a personal identity.

This is probably the origin of the non-ironic type of "Fellas, Is it gay to [insert thing that has nothing to do with homosexuality]" discourse.

People know that just being heterosexual isn't enough to avoid being ostracized, that you have to be heterosexual and signal your acceptance and support of gender norms in order to be accepted. But since gender norms aren't set in stone, and vary between groups, those who seek acceptance require constant clarification of edge cases (is it gay for men to do housework? is it gay for men to be attracted to muscular women? is it gay for men to care for their children? is it gay for men to be attracted to women with piercings or tattoos? etc) to stay "straight".

Living life constantly being scared of being seen as "gay" seems like it would really suck.

Sometimes it's useful to look at your dialogue and ask yourself, "would a real human being talk like that?" But it's also good to ask the follow-up questions of "would the way a real human being talks sound good here" and "does this character actually talk like a real human being or are they weird about it."

Therapy is risky because sometimes they'll just ask you their standard "why can't you, though", and you think you're making some good point by saying something like "well if I don't do anything with my life then what's the point of being alive in the first place" and your therapist gets that look on their face and you immediately realise that your dumb ass just got caught, pinned to the ground with your stupid-ass neck between the spikes of a pitchfork, and you are not going to wiggle out of there before you two unpack what the fuck you just said.
