My Kingdom Is Not of This World, 2013. Ink and digital color, 11x14”.

Happy Independence Day. I have mixed feelings about this holiday.

I made this piece to capture my feelings toward Christian patriotism and the religious right in America. I’m tired of hearing about “culture wars” and “taking America back for God.” Jesus of Nazareth was a humble, nonviolent Jewish prophet who, because he loved and ministered to the most marginalized outcasts of society, was put to death by religious and political leaders. I don’t see his message reflected in the hostile rhetoric of today’s Christian Right, nor in early America’s violent displacement of native peoples and oppressive institution of chattel slavery.

It would be wrong for me to fail to be thankful for the freedom and comfort I have today as an American citizen, but I am not someone who can be a patriot. Have a safe and happy Fourth, everyone.
