“There’s just one thing,” said Kaz, studying the privateer’s broken nose and ruddy hair. “Before we join hands and jump off a cliff together, I want to know exactly who I’m running with.”  Sturmhond lifted a brow. “We haven’t been on a road trip or exchanged clothes, but I think our introductions were civilized enough.”  “Who are you really, privateer?”  “Is this an existential question?”  “No proper thief talks the way you do.”  “How narrow-minded of you.”

He stares at her, the barest glint of something like panic in his eyes.

“We share the bed and we share the coinpurse -” he starts reciting the standard Kerch vows but then pauses. Swallows hard. Starts over. “I am yours to hold, Inej Ghafa, yours to have. Use me as you see fit. This life - next, next life, if something like that exists. I promise to love you forever.”

Kaz Brekker, the most fearsome boss the Barrel has ever seen. Her Kaz, who has such a way with words and who has told her, multiple times, multiple things she could never replicate in their elegance. Kaz, stumbling now through his wedding vows, his voice shaking like a leaf on a wind.

[The moment Freddy walked through the door], I just knew this was Kaz, straight away. And we hadn’t had chemistry reads. So finding out how we work together on set has just been a very organic experience. And yeah, I love working with him. I think we work really well together.
