hi everyone the aviary has until november 2024 to raise enough money to find a new location or else all the birds will be rehomed

for those of you who don’t know the aviary has been operating out of an old house for years. the house is officially falling apart and is no longer safe to house the birds. the city has completely given up on us. the deadline to find a new place is november 2024, and if we don’t raise enough money to find somewhere else, the aviary will be forced to dissolve and all of the birds will have to find new homes.

it’s not easy to find homes for 20 large parrots, many of which aren’t sociable and have health issues. there is a pair of bonded macaws that cannot be separated and can be aggressive, loud, and destructive - there are not many places for them to go. it is not going to be easy to find somewhere else to go (especially with the current real estate market in canada) but anything and everything helps. please consider donating if you can :)

Oi, Radfems, get the fuck off my posts.

I may be shutting this down, but I will say you are still not welcome here.

Pebble does not respect transphobes and white supremacist (and adjacent) folks </3

Hey friends, I think the time has come to say goodbye to this blog.

Everything has changed since I started here and as my lack of activity has shown I don’t really have the energy to keep it up.

Like there is more to it, but that’s the bottom line of it all.

I loved my time with birblr, and my art and personal blogs aren’t going anywhere if you wanna chat, but I think in a few days I’ll be deleting this blog. Thanks everyone.

Love all of you and your flocks.

See you on the flip side. <3

Aw man…I understand, but that’s a real shame. You were pretty much the only other linnie lover I ever “met” and I really enjoyed seeing Pebble on my dash (he is SO precious) and talking about my linnie (Bubba) with you every once in a while. I better reblog all that sweet sweet pebble content while I still have the chance!!

You are always free to come over to my main @pom-seedss and talk about linnies and ask for Pebble pics! I am more than happy to hear more stories of Bubba toooooo!

I still love birds, I still love talking birds. But this blog is becoming a sore spot for a lot of stuff I lost in the last few years, including my access to the shop and all of the boarding birds there. Plus, I can’t lie, Tumblr’s communities have changed over the years and I genuinely don’t think I fit in here anymore. At least, not in the capacity that I made this blog for.  I find it too stressful to really navigate and I think about this blog laying unused and vacant all the time and I figured... it was time to let it go in a more official capacity. If people really want me to keep it as an archive I’m willing to entertain the idea, but at the least it won’t be active anymore.

Petition to force whoever designs these foragers to test them on a bird before releasing them

Honestly!

I also hate it that toys don’t take into account basic things like different beak shapes. Like. Take a toy that green cheek conures adore and can fit and make it five times bigger, that’s good enough for a macaw, right?

And there is no difference between a macaw beak and an umbrella cockatoo’s beak according to the toy manufacturers! They say they are suitable for “large” parrots, but the birds all have different shapes!

Like, sure, you gotta work to find a toy that is suitable for your specific bird, but when the designers just upscale or downscale a design and call it done it is annoying as hell.

My cat Xixi has been having trouble lately.

She’s been vomiting and seems in some pain recently. I’ve taken her to the vet several times and all her tests come back fine. Since we’d gotten a new cat recently, the vet assumed it was stress but wanted us to watch it. Well. Now she’s got urinary blockages and is passing blood jelly after a lot of struggling and pain. She got in to the vet and the tests they ran came back fine, and she peed fine while at the vet so we just had to watch her for now. Make sure she is eating, give her extra fluids, that sort of thing. Well this weekend it happened again, with the side effect of finally clearing the blockage on my front carpets along with the rest of her very full bladder…. She had to have an ultrasound and we’re waiting on the results. She may end up needing surgery. I’ve been managing this but needless to say my emergency vet funds are getting…low.

So I’m opening half price headshots to help replenish that and pay for anything else she may need.

Thanks for your time!

I absolutely adore when birds do this. You offer them a thing, but they do the unsure body language, then slowly reach out.... “I said... no... THANK YOU” whip it away! A++

@razerathane it’s a really consistent thing now! A daily snuggly occurrence! If she’s genuinely not in the mood for a cuddle she’ll just communicate that and he gives her space. Took a while but they did eventually establish a good pattern of communicating when they’re done with interactions for the moment so no more needing me to aid in their choices to move away when needed.

@bettsplendens generally speaking large + small bird combos can absolutely be dangerous, heck even just two parrotlets can seriously harm/kill one another. Our birds aren’t out together if someone isn’t there to actively supervise them. As the previous question notes they didn’t get along when we first added Newt to the flock. Newts species (green bird) is known for interacting with other species of parrots in the wild and as a result is a decently safe choice when it comes to multi-bird interactions. They were very gradually introduced and had a good few years of me helping Newt learn when to move away and give Mia (blue bird) space so no fights or miscommunications could occur. Over time Newt was able to learn when Mia needs space and how to respond so that they can successfully interact with low risks for injury. But as I said, if someone isn’t home to quickly act in a worst-case-scenario then they aren’t able to access eachother.
