Day 21 of my 100 days of productivity! Today I went back to my psychology notes, reading through them all as well as reading through the revision guide and textbook. More Than You Ever Wanted to Know About Electrical Engineering: Balanced Three-Phase Wye-Wye Connections

We’ve been considering the ways in which you can connect a three phase source up to a load. Basically, we have two options: wye or delta. This week we’ll look at how a wye-connected source hooked up to a wye-connected load behaves. So basically, we’ll have a system that looks like this:

If this circuit is balanced, a couple of things are true:

Practically, what this means for us right now is that we can analyze one phase and get a result that applies for all of them.

One of the things we’re interested in knowing is the voltage between phases. We know that the line voltages with respect to neutral are:

We can find the line-to-line voltages by subtracting one from another.

We can get the other line-to-line voltages the same way. All together, they look like this:

Each line voltage has a magnitude of the square root of three multiplied by the phase voltage, and they’re all shifted around by 30 degrees from the original phases.

The current in each branch is easy to find by applying Ohm’s Law.

Like the voltages, the currents will all be the same magnitude, but at different phases.

I haven’t posted anything for months -literally, my last original post was back in March- and I feel really sorry about that! The past two months have been really difficult for me, and the amount of work I had and still have to do is unbelievable. Panhellenic exams start in 10 days and I can’t say that I’m ready for them. Anxiety is now definitely starting to kick in, and many health problems occur from that. But I really, really believe that I’m gonna make it safe and sound. My parents seem to be really supportive, and they hopefully won’t make any big deal if I don’t get into the university that I’m now working for. Exams season is probably near for most of us, so keep in mind that you can definitely make it and if you don’t, grades don’t really reflect who you are and what your qualities are. Keep being productive everyone and put always your mental and physical health before your grades!
