I’ve noticed, the last few days as the temperature has steadily dropped that my appetite is kicking into Cold Weather Mode.

Warm weather appetite; “Ahh, a salad would be nice, maybe a bit of fish and fruit.”

Cold weather appetite; “Okay, brain, we’re cranking up the metabolism because it’s cold out, so tell the stomach that we want STARCH and BUTTER and we want it RIGHT NOW.”

Warm weather appetite; Ehh, don’t really feel like dessert, but maybe a cookie or something.

Cold weather appetite; Brownies. All of them. Now.

Yes! Cold weather makes our bodies work harder to stay warm, and burns through calories a lot faster. This is why a lot of cultures who live in cold climates eat a lot of rich foods and have traditions like butter tea. You need the calories to stay warm.

If this is your first time in colder weather, your body is having to adapt real fast, and so you’re burning food energy like tinder to keep the ol’ warm blooded system revved up. If you don’t get the food energy your body is demanding, it’ll save energy other places to keep the heat cranked up, and you’ll find yourself becoming really lethargic and tired.

Have some extra peanut butter toast (so long as you aren’t allergic to peanuts, of course) and make some chili.

Also learn the non-physical signs of hunger!

Did u kno ur first “I’m hungry” signal is when your thoughts keep turning to food? If you’re thinking about food, and your brain keeps wandering back to food- you’re hungry. Have a snack. Or a meal, if it’s meal time!

Making cupcakes and taking one, two, ten secret tastes of frosting? You’re in a calorie deficit and the bank is here to COLLECT. Eat something!

(I reccomend going at the frosting with a spoon, which also serves as an impromptu lesson on the body self regulating- it Will Taste Bad once you’ve had your fill, and despite what media tells you, it will probably be closer to two big ol bites, not like… all of it.)

Tired, lethargic, kinda cranky? You’re hungry!

Irrationally angry? Try a snack.

Cold, even when you should logically be warm? Food.

Overwhelmingly stressed by things you’re normally OK with? It’s tortilla time!

If you don’t eat when you’re hungry your winter experience is going to be a miserable back and forth between Too Full and Fucking Starving

(Why yes, most American women live in a perpetual calorie deficit, why do you ask?)

Welcome to the Midwest!

Good idea. I’d support this as a law.

I’d argue the same goes for anyone who takes a good enough look at a trans person’s genitals in the bathroom to be able to determine whether they have the “correct” genitalia to use the bathroom they are in. ‘Cause like, that’s an argument I see transphobes use a lot. “I don’t want to see a penis in the women’s room!”… and it’s like, “You’re only going to see that if you’re peeking under the stalls…”

Pyke Castle (Iron Islands Map - Work in Progress)

This is the finished look of Pyke Castle. It is an image of its own but will also be included in my upcoming map of the Iron Islands. From left to right you can see: - the Gatehouse - the Kitchen Keep - the Great Keep - the Bloody Keep - the Sea Tower

I love ASOIAF fan art, especially when it brings thing to life that the HBO series just doesn’t have time to dive into.

That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. I’d thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They can’t even interbreed. They don’t have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.

These

are more genetically compatible than These

and that’s why morphology-based phylogeny has Issues

The problem is perspective. People always think dogs are the ‘standard’ animal, the metric to use for whether or not two organisms “look like” they’re related. When in fact they’re a massive outlier due to the fact that we fucked up this lineage of wolf beyond recognition with selective breeding. It’s why people always say “breed” when they mean “species”, especially when talking about groups like lizards which can’t even be defined cladistically since some of them are closer to snakes than each other. To say nothing of fish.

I once read an article that emphasized there is no such thing as a fish. Sharks and rays, lamprey, lobe-finned fish like lungfish and coelacanth, bichir and sturgeon, and of course the multiple infraclasses of more “modern” fish groups are all only very distantly related to one another. They’ve maintained semi-similar body structures only because there are limited ways to efficiently move through water as a vertebrate.

This

And this

Are more distantly related from one another than you and I are from a lungfish

Which is absolutely fuckin wild.

Not only that, but all of us air-breathing land vertebrates, all the lizards and chickens and people and frogs, are closer to one another than those three “fish” are to one another as well.

these

are genetically closer than these

and…

these

are genetically closer than these

and my personal favorite, it really fucks with people…

these

are more genetically similar than these

COOL.

‘I have looked in the Stone of Orthanc, my friends.’ 'You have looked in that accursed stone of wizardry!’ exclaimed Gimli with fear and astonishment in his face. 'Did you say aught to - him? Even Gandalf feared that encounter.’ 'You forget to whom you speak,’ said Aragorn sternly, and his eyes glinted. 'What do you fear that I should say to him? Did I not openly proclaim my title before the doors of Edoras? Nay, Gimli, I am the lawful master of the Stone, and I had both the right and the strength to use it, or so I judged. The right cannot be doubted. The strength was enough - barely.’

Curious about Wizards Unite? AMA

I haven’t really been seeing a lot about Wizards Unite even though its been out for a few days now in ANZ. It hasn’t been marketed well, that’s for sure. I only knew about it from word of mouth. But I have a heap of friends and followers here that play Hogwarts Mystery, so I figured some of you may be interested in seeing my game and my thoughts so far:

  • The gameplay is a bit eh. The main concept is you walk around freeing ‘foundables’ which are things missing from the wizarding world (literally anything people, beasts, objects). Once you’ve freed the thing, you get a sticker that goes in a scrapbook and you’re trying to collect them all. It’s basically the exact same as pokemon go, except collecting stickers is way less exciting than collecting pokemon.
  • The actual ‘capturing’ mechanic is much more fun though. You use different spells to free the foundables (finite, flipendo, diffindo, etc) and, like in hogwarts mystery, you have to trace the spell movement. It is much harder than HPHM though, and you have to be as quick and accurate as possible.
  • You collect portkeys and essentially they work the same as eggs (i.e. you gotta walk them because….keys need kilometers? it’s a stretch). When you can use it, you place the portkey with AR and literally walk through it to collect stuff. It’s a cool concept, but so far very buggy. I wont hold that against them though yet
  • There’s greenhouses and inns that are your pokestops esentially. Greenhouses give you ingredients (that you can use to make potions, which you can use in raids for health and in game as berries) and inns give you ‘spell energy’ (which works the same as pokeballs basically). Inns also have ‘dark detectors’ which I haven’t really used yet, but I assume they work the same as lures.
  • I think the most fun so far has been the raids (called ruin chambers or something in this). There’s a heap more mechanics to it than raiding in pogo, so once people start doing it in groups i think it has serious potential. You can choose your profession in the wizarding world and train up so you get different skills and abilities to use in raiding.
  • The overarching story, so far, is 1) boring as fuck and 2) a bit confusing. The story itself isn’t confusing (some guy lost his wife and got pissed so he did this to the world yawn), but the concept is that it takes place post-hp era (harry as an auror himself asks you to help) but some of the foundables are characters that don’t exist anymore (Tonks and Hedwig for example). It’s not ‘confusing’ per se, i just don’t like it much.
  • My favourite part of the game so far is the customization of your character. You can pick your hogwarts house, profession and, the greatest thing to have ever happened, your wand (including the wood, core, flexibility and length). You also have titles and badges which will probably be like achievement things.

Those are the major points I think. If you have any questions or want to see anymore screenshots, just send me an ask :)
