Lionel Messi talks Argentina, Barcelona, family and more via Fox Sports Argentina

The family

“We’ve been together for 11 years, although we’ve known each other since we were kids, but it was something mutual, it was love at first sight”

“As I said before, I left, we separated, we didn’t see each other or talk for sometimes because back then it was different to communicate people from here, we did it with letters, by e-mail because it was expensive to call and I didn’t have a phone. It was difficult to maintain a relationship..we grew up, reunited and here we are”

“When Thiago was born I understood that the priorities were becoming different. It hurts a lot to lose but I get to my house and I see my children and my wife. Before I came home and I locked myself up and I did not want to watch TV as well as not eating anything.. I still suffer when losing, but I handle it in a different way. Now I have the obligation to be at the table with my children.“

“Antonela and I would like to have a baby girl”

Thiago is into all of that [football], he lives everything that is football, what it gives, he goes to the pitch, he lives the matches, he suffers a lot when we lost, against Liverpool or the Copa del Rey. Mateo is young. He doesn’t realize that we lose or win, he doesn’t care”

“ My children are in a academy [FCB Escola]. The academy made for the children of the employees/players. Thiago has been going for two years, Mateo is in the first year. We also always go, train Monday and Thursday. Luis (Suárez) has a boy of the same age as Thiago, we meet on Tuesdays to drink mates”

“I lead a normal life, I take my children to school with my wife and we pick them up  in afternoon. They have many friends now, they are always doing something. I have a good relationship with group of parents in my children’s school. My wife is in the Whatsapp group. The school is close to my house and I like walking around the neighborhood”

On Thiago not wanting to be called “Messi” : On one hand, he likes and and enjoys it. On the other hand, sometimes he comes home from school and says’ I want them to call me just Thiago , I’m not Messi, I’m just Thiago.

If he were to move back to Argentina:

“My dream as a kid was to play with Newell’s, I’m a fan. Something I still have inside of me but I don’t know if it will happen. There are a lot of factors. I have a family, it depends on my kids. Thiago has a spectacular group of friends and I don’t want to break that…Sometimes we throw it out there, jokingly, that we are going to Argentina or to the United States and he tells me that he doesn’t want to leave. And I like that, he’s had his group of friends since he was three. They’re eight or nine, it’s a nice group. They’ve known each other since they were young.”

On Suarez

“People started to focus negatively on Suárez because he had to undergo surgery, he had been suffering from pain for a long time and he had no other choice.“

“I have a Whatsapp group that exists of Suárez, Neymar and me. The name of the group has to do with South America…’The three Sudacas’ or something “

On  Real Madrid

“Of course Ronaldo is missed [in la liga], he made Real Madrid more important strong. I said at the beginning of the season that Real Madrid was going to feel Cristiano’s absence, which would be the case for any team. Some people got angry but it’s true. A player like Cristiano would missed by any team. A player who makes 50 goals per season, and that for them [Real Madrid] was key, obviously they would miss him.The entire Liga misses him.

“I do not know him personally, we just crossed paths in awards ceremonies”

“Sergio Ramos is a great player “

On his career/Argentina

“ I want to end my career having won something with the national team or try as many times as possible, not to be left with people who did not want me or bad comments towards me. Getting up, trying again, is the message for children who like to see me. That’s life, stumble and get back up and fight for your dreams “

"My dream was always to be a soccer player, to reach the First Division. I was in Newell’s, I was going to the pitch and my dream was to play in the stadium and live that. Life took me elsewhere, but my dream was always to be a professional player. Everything else that came exceeded everything. I still want to play in Newell’s, but I do not know if it will happen.”

“It was not easy to leave everything behind in Argentina and go to Barcelona.”

“I enjoying coming to Argentina to see friends and family in Rosario. “

“Argentina? "I see a very good group, very united and motivated”

“Thiago loves watching the national team”

“I do not like to see myself on TV. I do not usually re-watch the games”

Pep was a unique coach for me. I repeat, I do not see myself as a coach but if I were to become one, it would be with youth players.”

How long he can keep playing for and the 2022 FIFA World Cup:

“Hopefully I have no serious injuries and I can continue. There’s a lot until the World Cup, I don’t know if I’ll make it. I hope to stretch it out as much as possible. I’m a little scared of what will happen after football. I have nothing in mind. I love this, as a kid, I loved it. I always played football. I always had a life related to football. A training routine, rest. Being home and not knowing what to do is difficult.”

“I still enjoy matches and training as when I was a kid. The day I do not enjoy football anymore, I will quit. ”
