I will now share a little factoid from the Swedish pen & paper role-playing scene that the rest of the world isn’t that aware of. First of all, we love Disney. Not all of Disney equally, but specifically Donald Duck and his friends. We -love- Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Scrooge McDuck comic books.

Now, bear that in mind when I tell you how in the Swedish version of Dungeons & Dragons, Drakar och Demoner (literally Dragons and Demons), you can play Duck characters.

So Hedgeknight and I have both been fielding plenty of questions lately about Donald Trump being elected president (hedgeknight because he’s super smart and knows tons about military law and me because I’m a lawyer).  And we wanted to make a short PSA video about why you should stop listening to journalists who are trying to make money by shocking you (and who have never gone to law school/served in the military in an officer capacity)

PSA to  LGBTQ PEOPLE WHO ARE PANICKING OVER UPCOMING LEGAL ISSUES DUE TO TRUMP’S PRESIDENCY

so OK I’ve been seeing a lot of panic over my dash about the LGBTQ community and upcoming possible legal hurdles they might have to face (trans people in particular).  BEFORE YOU ASK SOMEBODY FOR LEGAL ADVICE OVER THE INTERNET PLEASE KEEP IN MIND:

1) that you need to verify not only this person’s identity, but the fact that they are CURRENTLY PRACTICING IN THE AREA THAT YOU NEED HELP IN. Would you go see a retired psychiatrist about bone cancer? no you would not. 

2) To verify ask for any sort of state/american bar ID number they have as well as a link to their website and any other additional confirmation you might be able to get from them, independently. 

3) Seriously also a PARALEGAL IS NOT A LAWYER. IF YOU WANT GOOD, ACCURATE LEGAL ADVICE, TALK TO AN ACTUAL FUCKING LAWYER. Not a law student. Not a paralegal. Not somebody who works with somebody who was a social worker. TALK. TO. AN. ACTUAL. LAWYER.

4) Also pro bono offers of help or not, there are all SORTS of rules of professional responsibility regarding lawyers, how they can advertise services, and how they can provide those services for clients, and whether or not there are conflicts of interest, etc. Good lawyers do a background check and make sure there’s no COI etc. 

5) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRACTICE GOOD SENSE, OK GUYS? Panicking can lead to rash decision making and turning to the first person who offers you advice/help. That is bad. Please take a deep breath and look into things before accepting help/advice.
