Can we just talk about how protective Juliet is of Romeo? In the balcony scene she’s so worried her family will kill him if they find him (‘I would not for the world they saw thee here’) and when the Nurse keeps blaming him for killing Tybalt she stands up for him:
He was not born to shame; Upon his brow shame is ashamed to sit For ‘tis a throne where honour may be crowned Sole monarch of the universal earth.
When Lady Capulet calls him a villain, she turns aside and says, ‘Villain and he be many miles asunder.’ And when her mother implies she will send someone to Mantua to kill Romeo, she so wisely says:
Madam, if you could find out but a man To bear a poison, I would temper it, That Romeo should, upon receipt thereof, Soon sleep in quiet.
What makes her drink Friar Lawrence’s liquid after expressing all her doubts and fears? THE THOUGHT OF TYBALT’S GHOST TRYING TO HARM ROMEO:
O, look, methinks I see my cousin’s ghost Seeking out Romeo that did spit his body Upon a rapier’s point. Stay, Tybalt, stay! Romeo, Romeo, Romeo. Here’s drink. I drink to thee (Q2) / Romeo, I come, this doe I drink to thee (Q1).
IT’S GLORIOUS. And Romeo knows this and it makes him feel so loved. Look at his words in 5.1:
I dreamt my lady came and found me dead– Strange dream, that gives a dead man leave to think– And breathed such life with kisses in my lips That I revived and was an emperor.
He’s literally picturing Juliet as the hero who brings him back to life with a love kiss. I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
Let’s not forget:
Juliet: Tis almost morning; I would have thee gone: And yet no further than a wanton’s bird; Who lets it hop a little from her hand, Like a poor prisoner in his twisted gyves, And with a silk thread plucks it back again, So loving-jealous of his liberty.
Romeo: I would I were thy bird.
Juliet: Sweet, so would I: Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing…
“This rather free adaptation operates on a grand scale: 140 cast and crew members work hard each night to feed, shepherd and entertain 250 audience members; the production runs for a month and offers ten performances in Basque and twenty in Spanish. “
