She hadn’t resisted Ruby’s help in getting back to the temple. She’d been the one to ask to be taken back anyway. The emotions swirling within her were getting to be too much; much more than she wanted to display in front of Amethyst and Pearl. It was easier to just confide in Ruby. Of course it was; they’d been together literally forever. When they got home, Sapphire was content to just stay where she was put on the couch. Again, she didn’t resist when Ruby took her hand. Ice particles were beginning to build up beneath her, though. It was clear she was making an attempt to conceal what she felt and failing miserable.

“We failed him,” Sapphire answered. “We promised Rose that we would protect Steven, and this happens, and…” She’d been crying before, but it was starting up again. What was she supposed to do? She knew that believing in Steven was all that they could do, but it didn’t feel like enough.

“I keep looking to the future, to try and figure out what to do, but I don’t see an answer. How are we supposed to be strong for Pearl and Amethyst when we can’t tell them what to do?” A Gem that was supposed to see the future was supposed to have the answers. That was what sapphires had been for from time immemorial. Now, she was a sapphire without a clue. Not even Garnet had known what to do. That was part of the reason she’d split up. The main cause had been the distress of what happened, she supposed.

Her eye shut, and she turned her head slightly.

“I know we’re supposed to have faith in Steven, Ruby. But I see so much that could go wrong. We can’t make it to him in time… Not without a ship. And those take time to make. A-And we still have to tell Greg what happened, and he’s going to be so upset, and Peridot and Lapis…” The advice Garnet had given Connie and Steven would have come in handy there. Giving advice and taking it for one’s self were entirely different things, though. Sapphire knew that.

“I can’t do this… Why didn’t we just try to stop him?”

Ruby had forgotten about the others. This was getting worse by the second. How the hell were they supposed to tell Peridot and Lapis, and even Greg? He was his father, and now because of them not taking action, his son was gone. This was on them. She had an inkling on how he would react, but in reality, she was too scared to face it right now. Eventually, yes, they would have to let them know, but for now, that wasn’t of their concern.

Letting her finish speak, she then let go of her hand, and embraced her. Not only would this help with her not freezing over the temple, it was a way to ease her troubled mind.

“I-I’m worried too, Sapphire. Believe me, I’m scared, and I feel horrible about this happening in the first place! I never once thought that... that he would be stupid enough to go with them! I feel like an idiot!” Sniffling, she forced herself to breathe, even if it was really shaky. She couldn’t lose her cool. Not here, not now.

Lowering her head, she pulled her other half closer, not wanting any space between them. “I don’t know why we didn’t stop him... We were all in shock, but... we could have done something.” Ruby was mostly muttering to herself at this point. She put all the blame onto her shoulders. “Somehow, it’ll be okay... it has to be.”

Her fingers dug into her dress, desperately mustering up the courage to speak again. “I-I... I can tell them if you want. That way you don’t have to.”

Trust Steven? But he was going to get himself killed! Sapphire couldn’t stop thinking about that possibility. Ruby was right, though. They had to trust that he knew what he was doing. So, as they continued to bob there in the water, Sapphire nodded her head and let Ruby continue rubbing her back. All they could do was trust him.

“Okay…” Her voice was small and defeated. She didn’t know what else to do apart from trying to believe in Steven. There was one thing they still needed to do. They needed to get Connie, Sadie, Onion, and Jamie home. … Wasn’t there a fifth human, too? Was he…? No. He couldn’t still be on the ship with Steven, could he?

Maybe it was better to just focus on what was in front of them and worry about the rest later.

“Pearl. Amethyst,” Sapphire said at last. “Please take Connie and the others to their homes. Ruby… Can we go back to the temple? Please…?”

Almost immediately you could hear Connie refusing to go home. She wanted to stay with them and figure out a plan to save him, which was understandable, they all wanted that, but right now was not the time. Everyone needed to go home, and the Gems had to get back to the Temple, especially Sapphire. Eventually, she gave in and agreed to go with the others. Now all that was left was getting her back.

“Of course... come on, I got you.” Carefully, Ruby picked her up and held her in her arms. It was the least she could do for her. Kicking through the water, she was doing her best to get back to shore, and once she did, she walked her home.

There was so much on her mind, and so much anger and fear that she wanted to let out. It was paining her just keeping most of it bottled up, but she had to be strong for the team and Sapphire. She was definitely doing her best though.

Once they were home, she quickly locked the doors behind them and then approached the couch so she could gently place Sapphire down. Sitting next to her, she took a hold of one of her hands and stared at her with sorrow. It was obvious that something was wrong. Why else would she request to go home instead of helping Pearl and Amethyst bring everyone back?

“...what’s wrong, Sapphy?”

Of course she wasn’t alone. Ruby would never abandon her in a time like this. It just felt like she had to be the one to figure out what to do. She was the one that could see the future, and thus the one the team depended on when Garnet split apart. But right then, Sapphire was adrift. She couldn’t see what was going to happen to Steven.

“I know… I-I know you’re here,” Sapphire said. She let her head rest against Ruby without thinking much more about it and just let herself cry. It was so hard to even focus. Usually she had such a clear mind, but this had caught even Garnet off guard. Now what were they to do?

“What chance does he have out there?” Sapphire was asking herself more than any of the others present. “The diamonds… They…” They wouldn’t show mercy. Even if they could see the obvious that Steven wasn’t Rose, it wouldn’t save him.

“I know, I know...” she mumbled in response to her love’s comments. Him surviving were slim to none, but she knew they couldn’t think like that. Steven was going to be alright. They just had to believe in him.

Holding onto her tighter, she gently stroked her back, hoping it would ease her pain and slowly stop the tears from flowing. Ruby tried to think of ideas on how to rescue him, but everything came to a dead end. She felt so useless...

“We can’t think like this... Sapphire, despite how much it hurts us all, we have to trust that Steven made the right decision, even though we all agree that it was the wrong one. We have to have hope and believe in him. If we can’t even do that, what kind of family are we?” Ruby was getting choked up in her own words, and was desperately trying to fight back the sudden emotions that flew through her veins. Most of what she spoke reflected how she felt. She was conflicted on trusting him, and already, she felt like a failure to him. There must have been something more she could have done.

Steven was gone. He was gone and there was no way to get to him because Navy took the Roaming Eye back. It had been too much for Garnet, and she’d unfused because of it. It wasn’t anger that Sapphire felt. She was upset that she hadn’t been able to prevent this from happening, obviously, but more than anything? She felt so… Uncertain. She couldn’t move, and she couldn’t even seem to think clearly. All Sapphire could do was float there in the water and stare helplessly at the sky above.

Every way she thought about how to handle the future was met with doom. They could build a ship, but it wouldn’t be done in time. They could use Lion, but he wouldn’t listen to them. Lapis? No… She could only go alone.

Sapphire started to shake. She took in unnecessary breaths as her little form caved in to the uncertainty she felt brimming from every corner of her. She understood why Steven thought he needed to do this. He felt like he had to pay for the crimes Rose had committed. But he didn’t need to! And now…

“I don’t know what to do…”

Her voice was small… Fearful. Her eye brimmed with tears and the way her head moved made her eye a little more visible as her hair fell out of place. Not for the first time, she felt like she was going to freeze up entirely.

“I don’t know what to do…!”

How was Ruby supposed to help? They were all practically in the same boat. None of them knew what to do, and Ruby definitely couldn’t think of anything on her own. Watching her love become so fragile and weak broke her heart.

She had to act though. Everything grew quiet once everyone saw that they unfused. All eyes were on them, and she knew she had to do at least something. Words were what was challenging. If she admitted that she didn’t know too, then that wouldn’t be benefical to calming Sapphire. If she mentioned it was going to be okay, that would most likely be a lie. Things weren’t okay. Steven was gone. Nothing was going to be alright. The Diamonds would be with him, and who even knows what they’re going to do to him? It hurt her to see her like this, but she couldn’t really do anything either, not even a simple task.

Sighing, she let go of Sapphire’s hands, and then moved her arms around her tiny figure. Perhaps this would at least stop her from shaking.

“I’m here, Sapphire... you’re not alone in this.”

No... this couldn’t have been happening. How did she not see this coming? Steven... he was gone, taken by Aquamarine and Topaz so that way no one else would have been involved. They all begged him to stay, and poor Connie, she was screaming his name, telling him not to. This shouldn’t have happened. Garnet stared helplessly as the ship flew off, unsure of what they were going to do. How were they going to be able to get to space with no ship? How were supposed to get him home?

Panic grew amongst the group, cries coming from Saide and Connie, Onion and Jamie were unsure of what was going to happen, and the others mumbling questions, trying to figure out how they were to save him. Soon there was a realization of Lars not being with them, and this freaked Sadie out. It was all too much, and before anyone could react to the sudden light, Garnet was no longer with them, and instead, Ruby and Sapphire appeared.

Of course Ruby was full of anger, but that was understandable and could be controlled to an extent. Immediately, her attention turned to Sapphire, needing to check on her. She couldn’t even begin to imagine how she must have been feeling. Gently taking her hands into her own, she tried to hold back her tears as she looked at her love with concern.

“...Sapphire?”

Sorry if I haven’t been on at all. I haven’t really felt much like myself today, plus work brought me down a lot more. All I’ve been doing today is watching Grey’s Anatomy and OUAT, and I’ve been cooking to bring my spirits up. I may reply to some threads, but I am home all weekend so I’ll try and be more active then.

“I know, I know you are, I can feel you.” she frowned and shifted a bit, before shifting, he had heard Roses dress.

“What happened after we got separated? I don’t remember anything but being in great pain, then poofed.”

She wasn’t sure what was going on, but she hoped that this would be worth it. And that she could understand as she frowned a bit.

Hearing the others closing in on them, Ruby turned her head slightly to look at them, before softly shaking her head, indicating that she needed some time with Sapphire. This was all happening so fast, she just wanted more time...

She was hoping that the question would never be asked. Ruby didn’t want to remember any of it, and she didn’t want to startle her love, but... she deserved to know. After all, what was happening to her was a great tragedy.

“D-during the battle, your gem... i-it was cracked. After it ended, though, Rose healed you, and I’ve kept you safe here, making sure nothing happened to you.” Sniffling, she leaned in closer to Sapphire, before her arms were around her again, holding her as close as possible. “I’m sorry... I’m so sorry... I should have protected you back there, none of this would have happened...”
