Stephen Leith was a former chemistry teacher at Chelsea High School in Chelsea, Michigan. Leith grew up suffering from extreme depression, frequently falling into random fits of anger as he got older as well. At one point, Stephen threatened to kill his wife for misquoting him in a phone conversation that they had. His wife soon began staying with her other relatives to distance herself from him. It was during this time that Leith began collecting guns and killing small animals. As a chemistry teacher, he was well liked among his students and was nominated for best teacher several times, but could not get along with the school administration. After being accused of sexually harassing a student, Leith snapped.

On December 16, 1993, Stephen was requested to meet with superintendant Joseph Piasecki about the harassment allegation, as well as with the union steward, the principal, and an English teacher. As the meeting was going on, Leith lost his cool and stormed out of the room. His wife, Alicia, was also a teacher at the school. After leaving the office, he went into her room and told her “we’re leaving.” Alicia’s testimony about the incident included the following: “he was angry and he peeled out of the lot ridiculously fast. I asked him to slow down; he was scaring me. I told him when we got home we’d call a Michigan Education Association representative and he said he “was done talking to people.” When we got home, he poured me a cup of coffee and I started to make the call. The administration’s secret file on Steve was open on the kitchen table and I pointed out to Steve one section. He looked at it and stiffened, went into a rigid stance. He said “that’s it! He’s going to die.” Alicia, who was worried that her husband would harm someone, contacted the union representative’s assistant and warned them about Stephen.

Leith drove back to the school in a rage, and once inside, began shooting at the superintendant numerous times in the chest, ultimately killing him. He then shot at principal Ronald Mead and at English teacher Phil Jones, shattering Mead’s femur bone and grazing Jones’s abdomen. Police chief Lenard McDougall had claimed that he “found him sitting in a chair in the classroom by himself.” The event was thought of as one of the worst tragedies in the city’s history. Once apprehended, Leith was sentenced to life without parole.
