Guys, this is the second to last chapter. After the next chapter you all can request more together universe fics! I will try my best to post them!
Owen looked at his phone, sighed at the date and the fact that he got called into work. He, Amelia and the boys were just getting used to a little routine, now that they’d officially moved into the new house. He took today off, but was ended up paged to come in. Something about Kepner being out. He sighed knowing he should work instead of making the pregnant woman push through the day. Especially since she had covered for him while he was away in Jordan.
He leaned over the bed and kissed Amelia before getting dressed and heading towards the door when her voice stopped him. “Work?” She mumbled still half asleep.
“Yeah, I’ll try to be home early.” He spoke softly. “It’s early, go back to sleep.” He whispered, giving her another kiss before he turned and left. Amelia looked at the clock and sighed, it was early, but she knew the boys would be up in a hour so she figured she would get an early start.
Pulling the covers back, she climbed out of bed and walked out of their room, heading towards the kitchen to start breakfast. She opened the fridge and glanced around, looking for something she could cook.
She laughed to herself. This is so domestic now. She thought to herself. A year ago she was living at her sister-in-law’s house and having somewhat casual sex with Owen and now, she’s in a fully committed relationship with him, living with him and raising two kids with him. She shook her head in disbelief.
Reaching in the fridge, she pulled out the carton of eggs and a package of bacon, setting them on the stove to start cooking and then started a pot of coffee.
Ben and Oliver both walked out of their new rooms a while later, rubbing tired eyes. Ben helped Oliver onto a barstool and then sat next to him as they watched Amelia cook.
“Morning, sleepyheads.” She greeted. She frowned when she didn’t get a cheerful answer. She turned back around to see Oliver in his own world and Ben staring sadly at her. “Penny for your thoughts?” She asked.
“I don’t have a penny.” Ben replied roughly.
“It’s a figure of speech. It means what are you thinking.” She explained and he nodded in understandment.
“Today’s mom’s birthday.” He said quietly.
Amelia’s mouth opened and then she nodded slowly. “I have an idea.” She stated, setting the spatula down and turning off the burner. “What if we bake a cake for her and eat it?” She asked.
“Cake! Cake! Cake!” Ollie cheered, pumping his fists in the air.
Ben cracked a small smile. “I guess. I mean I do like cake.” He shrugged. “Owen said he was going to take us to see her grave sight. He said he got her a stone.”
“I’ll take you then.” Amelia suggested. “We can bake her a cake and eat it there, okay?” She suggested. Ben nodded with a smile. “Here, eat some breakfast then we have to go shopping for ingredients.” She said, playing up both boys’ breakfast.
Amelia lifted Ollie into the shopping cart and pushed him down the aisles, followed by Ben with the list. “Says we need flour, baking powder, eggs, vanilla, milk, sugar and butter.” He read off.
“We have eggs, flour, vanilla, milk sugar and butter at home. But we do need a cake pan the baking powder and some frosting. What else do you want to decorate it with?” She asked, strolling down the baking aisle.
Ben looked across the shelves, picking out a few birthday decorations and placing them in the cart. “This okay?” He asked and Amelia nodded.
She then pushed the cart down the remaining aisles, grabbing the rest of the items they needed before heading to the checkout and heading home.
“Are the helpers ready?” She asked and both Ben and Ollie nodded, seated at the bar stools. “I need one cup of sugar.” She said and handed the sugar jar to Oliver and he used the spoon to scoop the sugar into a measuring cup. When Amelia told him to stop he poured the contents into a bowl and waited.
She then handed Ben two eggs and a half cup of melted butter. He cracked the eggs into the bowl and poured the butter over top. Ollie helped her scoop in a cup and a half of flour and pour it into the bowl while Ben carefully measured out two tablespoons of vanilla and dumped them in followed by one and three-fourths tablespoon of baking powder. Amelia then measured in a half cup of milk and poured it in and started whisking it a bit to get it started before passing it off to Ben to mix. After a few mixes he handed it over to Ollie, who ultimately failed at trying to stir the batter but with Amelia’s help he succeeded.
Amelia the poured the batter into a greased baking tin and placed it in the three hundred fifty degree oven for a half hour. They passed the time by cleaning up the kitchen and tidying up the mess they had made with the flour. Amelia then sat Ollie on the counter and wiped him down with a damp dishrag while she asked Ben to go clean up in the bathroom.
The timer rang and Amelia carefully took the hot cake out of the oven, placing it on the stove to cool and walking into the living room. “The cake has to cool, what movie should we watch?” She asked. Ben walked over to their newly stocked movie cabinet and pulled out Cars, a favorite of both his and Ollie’s.
Amelia placed it into the player and hit play, curling up on the couch with the boys.
Ben climbed into the car and held the cake on his lap as Amelia strapped Oliver into his new car seat and started the car. She drove out to the cemetery, a place she hadn’t been since her brother’s funeral and she found a space, putting the car in park before stepping out.
She grabbed the bag of paper plates and forks she brought and took the cake from Ben while he got out of the car, leading the boys to where Meghan’s headstone lay.
Owen had her stone placed next to Derek’s. The little things he does make her smile. She sat down on the grass, setting the cake in front of her and pulled out the plates as the boys sat down.
She sliced into the vanilla cake and placed a slice on each of the plates before picking up the biggest piece and digging her fork into it.
“Mom?” Ben said quietly. “I miss you. Ollie didn’t know you very well, but I did. And I miss you a lot.” He said, shoveling a bite of cake in his mouth. “Uncle Owen and Aunt Amelia are taking really good care of us. So don’t worry.” He reassured. “We live in a really nice house now. And I’m starting third grade in the fall. Ollie is going to start kindergarten next fall. We made you a birthday cake.” He added. Catching his mom up to date with the latest news. “Amelia is a good cook. She makes really good waffles. And sometimes she lets me stay up past my bedtime when Owen is at work. And Owen is pretty great too. He plays soccer with me in the backyard. He’s teaching me everything I need to know. He said I could join the soccer team too. And Ollie loves them too. We’re doing okay.” He said, placing a hand on her headstone.
Amelia watched silently as she ate her slice of cake. Ben then scooted closer to her and sat right next to her, leaning his head on her shoulder. Slowly, tears rolled down his cheeks. “I miss her, so much.” He cried. Amelia set down her plate and wrapped her arm around him.
“I know you do.” She whispered.
“Ollie doesn’t understand. He never got to know her and I just miss her.” He sobbed.
“I was five when my dad died. And my brother filled in that spot. He took me to my fourth grade father daughter dance and held me when I cried, not understanding why I had to go with my brother and not my dad.” Amelia told him. “It sucks not having your parents. But there’s people around you that love you so much. And I’m always here.” She said kissing the top of his head.
He wrapped his arms around her waist in a hug. “Don’t leave.” He whispered.
Owen walked into the house late that night, both boys in bed and he found Amelia curled up in bed with her phone in her hands. “Reading?” He asked.
“How were they today?” He asked quietly, changing into a pair of flannel pajama pants.
“Today’s Meghan’s birthday.” She said quietly. He nodded, crawling into bed next to her. “We baked her a cake and went to see her. And Ben called us Uncle Owen and Aunt Amelia for the first time. He also told me not to leave.” She said, leaning her head against Owen’s shoulder. “I’m not going to leave.” She said.
“Love you.” He whispered.
