The new background color is ok but the color of the buttons are too bright, they look like those terrible 1990′s websites.

Don’t like the new dark blue? We’ve got you covered.

This is a short-term fix that essentially undoes the new dashboard update (except on settings pages, sorry), including for any themes or userstyles you use. Grab Old Blue from the gallery today and fling yourself back in time to a more comfortable yesterday.

The Official “Log Off” Protest F.A.Q!

The “Log Off” protest is in response to the recent NSFW ban announced by Tumblr. The ban flags all content the filtering system detects as NSFW, reducing visibility to the community. The system has proven time and time again that is inefficient, oftentimes flagging SFW material as NSFW.

This SFW material includes art, memes and so on. This ban directly hurts the community and will not solve the actual problems at hand due to the poor flagging system. Because of this, the entire community will suffer.

So to respond, I propose that every user on Tumblr logs off of Tumblr for 24 hours on December 17th at 12 am EST.

Times are listed above depending on timezone!

This post responds to some very common questions about the protest. So make sure to read it over!

How to Export Your Blog:

Alternative Sites:

Pillowfort
Mastodan
Wordpress
Twitter

There is also an official Tumblr blog (ironic, huh?) and Twitter for the protest! It’s at:

Twitterhttps://twitter.com/logoffprotest
Tumblr https://logoffprotest.tumblr.com/

There will be official updates on each account. Make sure to tag us in any posts, or use the hashtag #logoff2018

Thanks for your support guys. Let’s fight to make Tumblr better. Actually better.

Hey y'all! For those who’ve been asking, this is the info about what this blog is doing on the 17th. I hope y'all will join me.

Remember in 2012 when tumblr shut down for like an hour and everyone freaked the fuck out because “NOT OUR PRECIOUS TUMBLR!!!!” and now we’re all just

Anonymous asked:

Once, I encountered the funny story of an AI image descriptor with a sheep obsession. It had been trained on pictures of fields of sheep. Therefore, it tagged anything in a field as 'sheep', including an empty field, because they work on statistical probability. Therefore, it thinks "ah, a field! there's probably a sheep here." (It's a bit more complicated but basically that.) It also couldn't recognise sheep in places that weren't fields, such as petrol stations or barns. [cont]

Now, the alarming aspect of this story is that the very same technology is probably what tumblr is using to identify porn. Now, if it can’t tell that an empty field is not, in fact, full of sheep, what hope do we have that it can’t tell an empty room isn’t full of writing human forms engaged in passionate coitus?

this really does sound like an episode of black mirror

This is gonna produce some absolutely baffling pornography.

…. oh my fucking god they actually are using open source software. They’re using a fucking one-layer unidirectional bicategory tag-trained neural network. This will never work. Literally, it will never work. There’s just not enough algorithmic complexity to do what they’re asking of it. I bet you I could prove on a mathematical level that this joke of a neural net fundamentally lacks the abstraction necessary to do its job.

This will never get better. Their algorithm will never stop fucking up, it will never actually flag porn reliably and it will always require a massive quantity of human hours to deal with the deluge of mistagged pictures. This isn’t just a case of an insufficiently trained algorithm, it’s just … this is the most basic neural network you can make. It probably hasa a lot of neurons and has loads of training data but like … you can’t just brute force this kind of stuff. One layer of neurons is just Not Enough.

Also, just to make this clear, Tumblr lied. I mean, we already know this, but I mean they liiiieeeeed. All that stuff they promised about what would or would not be censored? That cannot be delivered on with a system this simple. Nude classical sculptures, political protests, male-presenting nipples (really Tumblr?), nude art outside the context of sex, all that? You cannot train a bicategory one-layer neural network to exclude those things. It cannot be done. Tumblr never intended for those things to actually be permitted, they were just lying. Because the system they have cannot actually do what they said it would and never will be able to.

Also, this kind of system is super vulnerable to counter-neural strategies. I bet you before the end of the month someone hooks up their own open source one layer bicategory neural network which puts an imperceptible (to humans) layer of patterned static over arbitrary images, and trains it by having it bot-post static-ed images to Tumblr and reinforcing based on whether the images are labeled nsfw or sfw. Seriously, within a month someone will have an input-output machine which can turn any image ‘sfw’ in Tumblr’s eyes.

This is genuinely pathetic. Like, I have real pity for whoever implemented this, because it’s clear Tumblr doesn’t actually have any engineers with any expertise with machine learning left at all and they foisted the job off on some poor bastard who has no idea what they’re doing and is going to get all kinds of flak for their (perfectly reasonable and predetermined) failure from management.

So, from this, what I’m getting is the bot just has a “this is sex” and “this is not sex” AI, which were scotch-taped together, and then chucked like a rock into Tumblr’s code.

Fun.

Thy also silently block the blogs they deemed “explict” for fuck knows what standard (my sideblog with two posts was flagged). I mean, what use is a social media when your stuffs won’t show up anywhere? And they don’t tell you what is censored and how you can avoid it. No notification before nor after you post stuffs. And once your blog is flagged, you disappear from the radar forever. To be honest, even China did a better job, at least they tell you your post contain censored words or they straight out delet/censor your whole post. It’s better than this Schrödinger’s Explict content.

For everyone’s information:

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Do:
  • Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
  • Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
  • Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
  • Come back on the 18th and check in
Don’t:
  • Delete the app from your phone (this doesn’t affect their revenue and since it’s off the store at the moment it’ll be hard to get back)
  • Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and don’t use it you’re saying to staff that there’s still time to save it. If you delete it’s hard work to come back.
  • Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
  • Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
  • Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.

PLEASE PARTICIPATE THIS NEEDS TO BE BIG SO WE NEED TO FOLLOW THROUGH!

Doing this. Who else is in?

17th the US time? My 17th would be 13hr earlier.

I’ll be at work on the 17th and i'm gonna be moaning my ass off in bed from being tattooed on the 18th. the purge is going to be a glorious event that everybody is going to remember in their own way. we are reacting to it like the armageddon is upon us, and we all gonna feel it very differently, yet simultaneously.

also i’m just ranting cuz i’m halfway done transferring my blog, and tumblr still hasn’t done jackshit to unflag the empty main blog all my transferred shit sits upon, so all my effort is probably gonna be gone when that one gets purged for no fucking reason.

@staff you fucking goblin turds get the unflaggings rolling, moss grows faster on dry rocks than you guys get a job done.

Hi everybody,

So today I went on my blog to see how things look. I add around 10 to 15 posts in the morning.

What I found was pretty disturbing.

Nothing was updated since yesterday morning.

Old posts with nudity were placed in my front page, some going back 2 years.

So its very clear to me that someone has been manipulating my blog and trying hard to show that nudity (not porn - EVER) is on my blog.

They are trying hard to make me an example of what is on Tumblr.

So, my advice to all of you is to check and see if this is happening to you too,

I have deleted these front page posts, to fight Tumblr and to publicly call them on it with this post to my 47,000 followers.

I see this activity as showing Disrespect for me and my message.

I don’t tolerate Disrespect - EVER!

I fight it!

hey there! >this< might be relevant, or at least similar to your issue, but nobody is sure about the details of these incidents yet. All the community is aware of as of now is that there is a latency to new posts appearing, but this.. I haven’t seen happen yet, so hopefully your message spreads for people to see if they have it too.
