Scarecrows

{ϟ};; —Things weren’t looking good for the young shinobi. He was surrounded, severely wounded, and his chakra supply was almost completely depleted. He should have known he wasn’t ready for this kind of mission yet. It wasn’t supposed to be that hard - assassinate his victim and get out of the area. But things took a turn for the worst. He should’ve been more careful and he should’ve anticipated an ambush; but he’d thought he’d gotten the upper hand on them, so he wasn’t concerned about traps. That was a stupid, stupid thing to think on his behalf though, and now he was paying for it.

Things were moving too quick for Kakashi’s exhausted body to keep up with. The world around him was blinking in and out of existence. Everything was spinning and his vision was blurred by blood - his blood - that seeped down his face. The muffled insults and laughter from his attackers rang all around him. He tried to stay on his two feet - he really, really tried - but his body was rebelling against him. One knee hit the ground, and the other was quick to follow.

"Eh, just take the damn kid out. They said they’d take ‘im dead or alive so I reckon his bloody ol’ carcass will be worth somethin’."

He was going to die.

Well, it was about time, he supposed.

His eyes never left the man who walked up to get rid of him. He was the guy that had spoken - the leader. And even though Kakashi was staring down death, he wouldn’t look away. He refused to. He wasn’t a coward like his father. He’d hold his ground until he took his final breath.

But the silver haired boy was forced to look away, however, when a flash of light completely enveloped the area. And the moment of his final breath never came.

Nothing about the environment had changed. Well, save for the fact that he wasn’t completely surrounded. There wasn’t a single trace left behind of his enemies.

Kakashi struggled to inhale and exhale. He must’ve punctured a lung, too. But at least he wasn’t in danger anymore. Well, from what he could tell he wasn’t. With his senses so dulled down there could probably be someone standing behind him and he wouldn’t even notice-

Quite suddenly, there was a voice, casually asking something. Behind him.

Hilarious.

He never did actually catch what exactly the question was because he rolled forward and away from the potential assailant, kunai drawn, teeth grinding together because god did that gash hurt. It was a nasty thing, slicing across his torso in one swift motion, and he knew better than to move any further. He couldn’t afford losing anymore blood.

So the little soldier stayed there, crouched, back turned to whoever had stumbled upon him. He neither moved a muscle or said a word.

He just waited.

How strange.

That white flash had nearly left Kakashi blind for the mere second it passed and the sudden vision still replayed itself in the back of the Jonin's mind. It had been stunning, no doubt about that, and he wondered if this kid had caused it. It would be an incredible thought to amuse, if he had any time to spend on it.

Either that, or perhaps one of the thieves deployed the perplexing light as a distraction. Maybe they had been planning on targeting this one, or already had by the looks of it. Whatever the case may be, he could only sense the small amount of chakra sourced within the boy's body and nobody else's nearby.

And, given a second to take in the scene, he could smell something metallic in the air. His eyes darted after the other's movement, watching as the supposed student rolled away- then stilled again with his back towards the taller man.

It's made clear that something's wrong and that's all he needs to know in order to continue.

"....----- are you bleeding?"

Image

"It doesn't do you any good to keep your back to me. You know-------------- If I wanted to have killed you, I would have already."

He moved closer at this, reciting something he had said to his students before- and it is true. If one turns their back on another shinobi in battle, then you should expect to be taken out fairly soon.

But, obviously, that isn't his intent- yet he doesn't move close enough to be able to actually help just yet. It looked like the other might try to attack and only harm himself more if he didn't identify Kakashi as a friend rather than a foe. He'd either have to wait until the nameless student passed out or get some kind of acknowledgement.

"Let me help you."

Iruka began his habitual dinner-making with ease. Vegetables littered the counters, meat was thawed and nicely chopped, and there were pots and pans already cooking their contents. “Not allergic to anything, are you?” he asked, glancing over. Cooking was his forte; it was a talent honed after years of living alone, and he prided himself on making delicious meals even with his hectic schedule.

He got out some plates and lined them up. “I didn’t mean it like that. You just look thin. Not that that’s bad, but— but you don’t eat well, do you? Naruto says so. So, you should… eat more.”

image

He was humming quietly to himself by the time the meal was ready, and he plated large servings for them both. Setting Kakashi’s plate in front of him with a pair of utensils, a glass of water and a smile on his part, he took a seat across from him. “I hope it’s alright. There’s more, if you want, too. I always cook too much.” And with that, he kept his gaze firmly on his own plate— although… the temptation to look up was strong.

Allergic?

"No." He answered offhandedly, not really thinking too much on the question. He isn't allergic to anything as far as he knows, but he does have a strong distaste for sweets. Oh well. He's sure whatever Iruka makes will be good enough to eat. Besides, it smelled delicious.

"I'll have to start pigging out on ramen like Naruto does."

Before he could ask if the man needed help with anything, it seemed like the dinner is already made- being set down in front of him and paired with a glass of water. "I really appreciate this. It looks great." Noticing how the teacher seemed to be oddly fixated with staring at his own plate, the silver haired jonin held back an amused laugh.

I wonder if he doesn't want to see under my mask.

Image

Curling his fingers beneath the material and peeling the cloth down to his chin, Kakashi ate with an incredible speed- leaving his plate empty and his face obscured by his mask once more. It's no wonder his own students could never see for themselves what lays beneath it.

"Yes! A sleepover!" Lee answered him with enthusiasm. "At least that is what it seemed like they meant! They said "Kakashi gets to have you for two whooole nights!" That implies a sleepover, yes?!"

Lee had grabbed the pajamas he’d packed for the two. He held up a pair of the pants, presenting them to Kakashi. “Look! They have little dogs on them! They look similar to Pakkun, do they not?! He pointed. They certainly did look like Pakkun. “Perhaps we can take a ‘selfie’ together!”

"What will be having for dinner, Kakashi?!"

"Ah-------- I see."

Image

He scratched the back of his own neck in an idle manner, wondering just what rumors go around about him in this village. Just because he reads Icha Icha Paradise in public didn't mean the guys had to go out and assume..- his thoughts are interrupted once again as Lee showed off the bright pajamas with dog print lining the material. They kind of looked like Pakkun, he supposed. He also figured he should probably allow.. whatever this is, because Might Guy might have put him up to this as some kind of 'rival' challenge. It's nice to play along here and there.

"A... what--------?"

What's a selfie? This kid moves a mile a minute.

"I didn't expect company. I can see what I can whip up." He got up to head towards the mostly barren kitchen, reaching out to ruffle the other's hair as he passed him.

"What, no hint?" Classified this, top-secret that. What a shame. Zabuza wasn’t the most perceptive man in the world, but even he could figure out that secrets were a terrible thing to keep from a rival. (If rival was really the sort of word to be applied to their relationship.) Looking up at Kakashi, Zabuza shook his head again. "How do you know Haku isn’t around? Or do you really think he’s still dead?" Now if that didn’t create a bit of interest, nothing would. Besides, did Kakashi really think that if he were alive, that Haku wouldn’t be as well? Somebody was due for a rather rude awakening. “And if the brats were here, they would have made their move by now. Naruto wouldn’t just let me stand here and talk to you.” Arms crossed, Zabuza fixed Kakashi with a look. The Copy-Cat was alone. So was Zabuza, but Kakashi didn’t need to figure that out for a little while. "Just you then? What, this mission wasn’t enough to warrant a hero to be part of the mission?"

No hint.

It didn't need to be said. Kakashi carefully scanned Zabuza, a familiar rival- if that's what this is called. He isn't entirely sure on the matter. Crouching down in this new spot he picked, he knew he couldn't leave now with how much time he's spent here instead of where he's supposed to be. Not without some information.

"Hmmm------------------------?  I wouldn't know."

The jonin wouldn't be doing himself any favors if he tried to look around. He finds his intentions to leave are suddenly replaced with the idea that Haku could be here right now. His skills are amazing, astounding even, and he's impossibly fast so his presence is always hard to detect. But if what's being said happens to be true, then he'd make himself known at some point. Somehow, he doubted the other is here and it seemed like a well placed bluff. It'd be better to coerce Zabuza into telling him rather than have a surprise attack in the midst of their conversation.

"Ah. Maybe Naruto wouldn't keep quiet. But I don't always have to bring him.

You know----------- they've all grown up pretty fast."

image

Before the swordsman could respond, he continued- his tone now carrying some weight. "Sometimes you need something other than a hero to get the job done. Out of everyone, I would think you could understand that, especially considering you're alone too." Unless you'd like to prove to me otherwise.

Ino looked…not uncomfortable. That was not in her facial range. But hesitant. “I was at a bar, and some guy told me I was so pretty he could punch me…and then he punched me. So I headbutted him. In the mouth.” Okay, here she does look a little embarrassed. It’s kind of funny that someone like her can turn pink that quickly. “Tsunade-sama had to take them out.” INEBRIATION, YAY!

"He must have been charming."

His comment is sharp, a clear edge ringing in his tone before he could really help it. He never liked men who couldn't take a hint nor any man who would use someone's looks as a reason to hurt them. Calming himself down easily enough, he laughed at the last bit.

"..----------------- he had it coming."
