Vegans of tumblr, listen up. Harvesting agave in the quantities required so you dont have to eat honey is killing mexican long-nosed bats. They feed off the nectar and pollinate the plants. They need the agave. You want to help the environment? Go back to honey. Your liver and thyroid will thank you, as well. Agave is 90% fructose, which can cause a host of issues. Bye.

Also, eating honey literally helps bees and in no way harms them. In fact, if honey is left in their hives it will ferment and as a result it will begin making the bees very sick. Please just eat the fucking honey.

The majority of vegans don’t even eat agave, and most of the agave consumed in the world is eaten by non vegans. Bees store the honey they make because they need it to sustain them in the winter. The sugar water that bee farmers replace it with is not nutritious and often results in hives not surviving the winter. Bees do not produce too much honey that needs to be removed from their health. It is absurd to suggest that a species that has survived in its current form for millions of years without human involvement would suddenly be incapable of functioning without human intervention. Please use some critical thinking skills before you claim that animals need to be exploited for their own good. European honey bees are not native to the Americas and are actually bad for native bee populations. If you want to help the environment, stop supporting honey farmers so that native bee species which are actually better at pollinating have a chance to bounce back. edit: By the way, nobody NEEDS to eat honey or anything like it. It’s just sugar, and if you really want a liquid sugar source just use maple syrup. Honey is a food that I never even gave any thought to replacing when I became vegan because it is completely irrelevant to most peoples’ diets anyway. Anything to demonize vegans though, I guess.

I think it’s generally a pretty good bet that the problem with food production practices that harm the environment in the interests of profit is generally going to be…… capitalism. not what a handful of weirdos do or eat. making out as if problems with food production under capitalism that are neither inherent to nor exclusive to veganism are problems with veganism may be a quick dunk or whatever but it’s not addressing the actual problem
