What is your favourite thing about Scott McCall? 👀😍
This may seem like a strange answer but I think it’s his impulse to self-harm. Even before the bite, Scott’s self-acceptance is very conditional: he worries deeply about disappointing or upsetting his mother and Deaton, and his obsession with self-improvement is his answer, I think, to his worry about becoming his father’s son. Those worries are increased a thousand-fold by the bite, and by Peter, who wants to turn him, season after season, either into a mindless weapon or someone like Peter himself—his Alpha’s son.
What fascinates me about Scott, and so my favorite thing in the sense that this is what keeps me coming back to him, is Scott’s response to those fears. He’s turned into a loaded weapon in season 1, his body and mind controlled by another, so he becomes even more obsessive about self-mastery, now as a potentially dangerous werewolf, and someone in a position to help others.
It’s striking to me that despite Scott’s talent for challenging the poisonous parts of the status quo, he never questions the idea that pain makes you human—that’s only Malia and Hayden, later. Scott internalizes that not as a way to hurt others, but as a confirmation that self-harm is what he deserves, either to control himself (when he claws himself to control the shift or face the anukite) or when he feels he’s failed others (after Derek dies, after he’s murdered).
It’s rare to find a character who turns inward like that, instead of lashing out, and it’s endlessly fascinating to me to crack him open and explore what’s going on inside him, where he’s put his claws this time.
