SPACE 2015 pt. 1 (pt. 2 coming soon!)

Okay, so there was no karaoke and the show was a little slow for people selling stuff but we met a ton of people that we’re really glad we had the opportunity to talk to. FIRST UP: czapbooks had the best looking table and their books are really impressive. I’m REALLY excited about about the upcoming Futchi Perf, which you can pre-order at http://www.czapbooks.com/product/futchi-perf. I had some serious budget limitations and was only able to pick up RIND by kickintheeyes. It’s mysterious and beautiful and bitter. SECOND: We met meghasissues and she’s great. Tracie picked up a few of her books and I read Cat Therapy while sitting at the table and it made me smile the entire time I was reading it. Like, I had some serious warm fuzzies. I also read her submission to As You Were #2 about music+pain+pits and I totally identify with it. You an order Cat Therapy or her other books at http://meghasissues.com/

THIRD: We also met Ann Uland and Emily Willis of Arbitrary Muse comics. They are partners who write feminist and LGBTIQ comics together. They travel A LOT. Tracie picked up If The Shoe Fits, which you can read more about and buy here: http://arbitrarymuse.com/collections/frontpage/products/if-the-shoe-fits-digital-download

FOUR’D: I LOVE gnarlyasiwannabe, OKAY? Apparently Max loves grave markers as much as I do. I can’t believe I neglected to mention that I work at a dang cemetery. Whatever. I’m sure I’ll see Max again. Buy stuff from Max! http://gnarlyasiwannabe.storenvy.com/

FIVE: My favorite surprise of the convention is alexiscooke. I’d never seen Alexis’ stuff before and I AM IN LOVE WITH IT. It’s wonderful. I shouldn’t be allowed to write, like, reviews of things because most of the reasons I like things have to do with my feelings and I’m not good at talking about them so I can’t really do how much I like Alexis’ stuff justice but if you look at it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Okay. http://alexiscooke.com/Comics-1

SPACE definitely made Tracie and I realize how fortunate we are to live in a city with a good comics community and in a place where there are lots of female and queer creators who get the recognition they deserve. We heard lots of stories from people who live in other places that have zero comics culture and zero interest in women who write comics. They should all just move here. Columbus should be the feminist comics hub of the universe.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I received such a wonderful review in House of 1000 Manga article !!! I’m always a little nervous about getting Dinner Ditz reviewed because it was the first comic I made right after graduating from MCAD and the first comic I had made after an 8 month sleep binge. This was lovely and really the whole article I think is a great read.  Go have a read and see why Sparkler Monthly is so AMAZING!

HURRAY!!! I’ve finally had the strength to finish up a few more of these puppies!! <3 These are up in my store now if anyone is interested <3

Here’s the description I’ve got up on the store:

Full color accordion comic with a plus cover. Interior page is printed on enhanced matte paper and is built by hand. Purple thread is rapped around the book to keep it together when not being read. Will be sent in a clear sealed bag.
Comes with hand drawn and painted thank you card.
Size: 4x5 inch

You can read the full comic here, but like I said in the post, I’m not sure if this comic is really suited for an online format (I’m just a weinny  book maker at heart! •;v•) !

ENJOY!

What type of paper do you use for printing?

Avatar

It depends, I REALLY like paper.

I'll keep the answer dwindled down to book printing (because this answer would get longer other wise).

For books, I try to chose paper that suits the story and so I tend to spend toooooo much time selecting paper. Until recently I hadn't settled on a brand, but if your thinking about making books, I'd recommend any paper from Mohawk. They are just beyond beautiful and very affordable.  If you're looking for some nicer reams of paper and can afford to put a little more capital into your project, I'd suggest French Paper Company. They have some GREAT paper colors and the paper texture is JUST! UH! it's great! (Did I mention I like paper?)

Ahem! On to specifics (lol)! For books like Monster or SUB- vol1 I use Mohawk i-tone paper (65 cover weight) for the interior and then a Canson Colored Bristol for the covers (they come in sheets of 22x30inch I'm pretty sure).  For How to Feed Dep. I use a glossy magazine paper and then a cream bristol from Wasu (Also a decent brand) for the cover (cover stock weight).  Circle is printed on epson doubleweight matte for the interior and some light weight paper that looks like it's made from paper bags (I can't remember what the paper is since I bought the paper some time ago).

I think that's all the paper stocks I use for books.  I hope this answers your question?
