Having seen the wizard for what he really was...

@marthajonesbecamealegend-blog / marthajonesbecamealegend-blog.tumblr.com

All those years on my own made me strong. They helped me remember I was worth something. I'm Martha Jones, the Woman Who Walked The Earth, and the universe had better be ready for me.

Respect Original Characters

If you disrespect OCs, you disrespect all authors.

OC stands for Original Character. Whether or not they exist in a fandom that is not their own does not matter. That’s why it’s not Original Story it’s Original Character. An OC is created solely off of the imagination of the author to carry out their purpose whether it be to love another character, to solve a conflict, or something else.

It is understandable if someone does not like a character that is a mary-sue or gary-stu. These are characters who are either a writer’s self-insert (which the reader wouldn’t know if they don’t know the author) or characters that seem too “perfect”. However, making mary-sues or gary-stus is a step in the OC creation process. These are typically made by beginning authors. They need time and people to help them develop their characters. No one is going to make a first draft of a character and call it a final, it takes time for characters to develop fears, strengths, weaknesses, hobbies, etc. It’s like revising an essay. You’ll move things around and change things until they’re nearly perfect, but nothing is ever “perfect”. You’ll ask your peers for their advice and to revise any potential errors. In the roleplaying world, a roleplay partner should point out any flaws or something that may improve a character. This is what makes characters less of a mary-stu or gary-stu. But the thing is, no one gives them a chance.

As an author in the roleplay community with several OC roleplay blogs, I myself and a few other OC authors have been having a hard time being accepted by those who play canon characters. This is why I’m writing this. Someone was bashing OCs in general, saying that they were an annoyance. Maybe it’s hard for some people to grasp, but canon characters are original characters. Someone created Tamaki Suoh, someone created Harry Potter, someone created Captain Jack Sparrow, but only when they got a popular movie, anime, book, etc. did they become what we know as “canon”. They’re still original to someone regardless of what people say. There are also canon characters that are more than perfect, but no one bashes them as much as people criticize original characters.

I’m not saying that there aren’t people who aren’t accepting of the creativity and imagination of Original Characters. It’s just that there isn’t enough people who are willing to look deeper into a character. Many criticize OCs before they really get to know them or their story. It’s disrespectful of people to do this without getting a good look. Maybe if people give more constructive criticism, OCs will receive a new makeover and the stereotype will be changed.

Let’s please get rid of the stereotype that all OCs are mary-sues or gary-stus. Because let’s admit it. There are people who will go onto an OCs page and say, “This character is an OC, they must suck,“ and not look into the backstory, the canons, or the intricate details that the author spend days, weeks, years putting into a character. And because of what? A lousy stereotype.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Don’t judge a character by their author. Don’t judge an author by their character. Help us develop our characters. Give us constructive criticism to make us better. Respect that we have flaws and that nothing is perfect.

His eyes narrowed slightly at they watched her every move. Noticing her trying to peep into the console room behind he  remained rooted to the spot, not giving her a better view. It had been CENTURIES since he had heard the upbeat voice of Martha Jones and it was still as lively as ever. Despite everything she had remained strong, but that was Martha.

“Technically I did nothing, I was forced to babysit and tree-hug for the day.” he replied, still not moving from the doorway.

He didn’t move from his post blocking her way and Martha fought the urge to roll her eyes. Bit of a tense one, this Doctor. Abandoning her attempt to see further beyond him, she rested back on her heels and crossed her arms over her chest.

Martha caught her bottom lip between her teeth and watched him thoughtfully, a tight smile tugging at her lips with his reply. “That’s hard to picture.”

“Went and got yourself a new face, I see,” she commented dryly. “New face, new interior decorator... It’s been a long while, I take it?” In truth, it hurt her a bit to think on how long he might have been avoiding her. But then, she had been the one to say goodbye. Not without good reason, she remembered with a small sigh. “What’ve you been up to, then?”

Journey to the Past || Martha & The Doctor

She hadn’t taken the bait, of course, he was foolish to think she might. Martha was far too clever for that, always had been. It was why he’d taken her on in the first place.

He let the act drop then, allowing her to see just how troubled he was. Even still, he was apprehensive in sharing what had happened. Again she spoke, and as she went on, guilt gripped at his hearts. She was right. He’d known how to get to her if he needed. He always had, but he was afraid. Afraid of what she might do, what she might say. Afraid that she’d push him away…

Just as he had done to her.

Oh.

She went on to say it was alright, that she understood.

It’s not alright, he thought, it would never be alright.

And there came the final blow.

“You wouldn’t be here unless you really needed something.”

God, he really was that selfish, wasn’t he..? He wanted to bolt right then. He didn’t deserve her help, not in the slightest. His gaze went towards the door, and he casually turned to make his way to it, only to have Martha block off his path.

Damn. She was really, really good.

With his only means of escape blocked off, he stood there, staring at her helplessly.

At the mention of Donna and Rose, his expression fell even more. She offered a smile, one he couldn’t bring himself to return. Despite her assurance that they were still friends, he didn’t quite believe her. It wasn’t her fault, how could it be? It was his. Always his. He was the one that ran. He always ran. It was second nature to him now, and a part of him wondered if, after so long, he could ever stop.

Silence settled between them before he finally spoke, his voice strained as he fought the the tears that were slowly beginning to form.

“Th-they’re gone…both of them. Rose went back to the alternate universe and Donna, she–….a human mind could never handle a timelord consciousness. I had to erase her mind and send her home. She doesn’t remember me, she can’t. If she ever does…it’ll kill her.” He explained, keeping his gaze on his trainers.

Again, silence fell, by this time, the tears were falling freely.

“….I screwed up, Martha.” He said, finally touching on the reason he’d come to her, “I really screwed up.”

Martha almost regretted blocking his escape as she watched his face becoming more and more stricken with grief. Maybe this was something he wasn’t ready to do. Still, she was well aware that not wanting to talk about something was not the same as not needing to talk about it. He had come here for a reason and it would be better if they had it out here and now.

Finally, she got an explanation, or a partial one at any rate. Did he want her to come with him again, now that his better friends were gone? She disregarded the notion easily. Even he wasn’t that much of an ass.

The tears in his eyes shocked Martha. She had seen him cry for the Master and cry as John Smith but she had never seen him just...cry. The Doctor had always seemed to her to be the ‘bottle it up and save it for later’ type. Not unlike herself. So if this was “later”, happeneing right in front of her, what must have happened to him that was so awful?

Running on instinct now, Martha crossed the distance and wrapped her arms around him tightly. In spite of everything that had gone wrong between them it still hurt her to see him so upset. It wasn’t fair the way the universe treated him, used him up and spit him out. The Doctor deserved better. How many times had he saved them, after all?

She hurt for Donna too. Martha recalled the way Donna had talked about the Doctor. He had become her whole world and transported her away from a life she clearly didn’t want. A life she was, apparently, now trapped in without even memories to remind her of her worth. She wondered, too, how Rose could have stayed away, why she might have done such a thing. Who could leave the Doctor knowing that he loved them back? Still, it didn’t seem the right time to ask just now.

“I’m so sorry,” she murmured sincerely, pressing into his shoulder and holding him close. Her own voice was slightly choked with unshed tears for her friend. His next words took her by surprise and she pulled back from him slightly to gauge his expression. More than anything, she supposed he looked lost.

Extracting herself from the embrace, Martha gestured to the sofa. “Why don’t you sit down for a bit,” she suggested, crossing the room to sit down herself. Her mind spun slightly with the thought of what he might have done wrong. Someone like the Doctor could do as much harm as good sometimes, and on a grand scale too. The stakes were higher for someone as powerful as him and he was far from perfect. Still, she knew in her heart he would never have intentionally hurt anyone. “Tell me what happened,” she implored.

The TARDIS was being all ISH-Y again. This time he know there were not two-dimensional being feeding off it’s power, or well he hoped. He aimed to park the TARDIS by Clara’s flat in order to see what was up with the sentient ship, but he had missed by a few miles. At least he was in the right time zone.

Looking at the scanner he found out that he had parked her in an alley near the hospital. Not thinking much more about the location, he began to try and figure out which part of the console needed repairing this time round.

Just as he discovered that one of the earthing wires had fried when he heard the sound of someone’s fist rattling against the TARDIS’s door.

“If there’s another forest, I swear to-” He swung the door open to reveal his previous companion standing outside it. “MARTHA?!

The door was answered abruptly by a man that Martha had never seen before. She took a half step back in surprise as he popped his head out grousing about a forest. Her eyes widened in shock when he said her name and then narrowed in suspicion.

Without a word she leaned to peer around him. The console room within was absolutely different in every way to what she remembered and there was no sign of the Doctor that she knew. She recalled the Master, then, and the way that he had changed his face... the haunted look in the Doctor’s eyes that last time she and Mickey had seen him. And she’d known then, hadn’t she? That whatever happened, he wasn’t coming back the same again...

Finally her eyes settled on the man in front of her once more and she understood. It was his eyes, really. She’d seen those ancient eyes in older faces and they never really changed. Her voice was quiet and her smile was just a little sad when she finally spoke. “Hello Doctor.”

Then she remembered what he had said and laughed in spite of herself. “I might have known you had something to do with that forest.”

“Let’s see.”

The Doctor glanced up in thought and folded his arms as he leaned against the console. “Lively, exciting, with a warm climate. Hrm. That’s certainly doable. Oh!” His eyes widened, mind ablaze with a perfect golden thought. Gazing back at Martha, a sly grin bloomed on his lips.

“I have just the place. Definitely fits your criteria. It’s a surprise.” He winked at her, then spun around and began moving through the takeoff sequence. “Close down the gravitic anomalizer.” Check. “Fire up the helmic regulator.” Check. He quickly circled around the console. “Handbrake.” Check.

Finally with his hand poised on the takeoff lever, he turned and looked at Martha. "Hang on tight!” he shouted, allowing her to brace herself before he p u l l e d t h a t l e v e r….

“ALLONS-Y!”

Martha watched in wry amusement as he circled the console. The excitement built in her chest until she was almost bursting. She had honestly believed she would never do this, never witness this again and in spite of the clever, sensible voice in her head which had told her it was for the best, she had always felt a certain bereavement at the thought.

His familiar cry of “Allons-y!” rang out and Martha gripped the console to steady herself as they were hurled through the vortex to somewhere, somewhen that was completely new. The TARDIS rattled and tossed them and she remembered what he had said that day the Earth was stolen. This ship was meant to be crewed by six and that was why it shook the way it did. As always the thought of him being alone made her sad, but a smile also tugged at her lips. Jumbled up and bouncing every which way, rambling all over the universe at top speed with the safeties off? The Doctor’s TARDIS suited him perfectly.

When the ship had settled into place once more she turned to the Doctor with an expectant grin. “So, where’ve we landed then?” Restless energy nearly had her bouncing on her feet as she turned to look toward the door. “What’s out there?”

//So I finally caught up on Season 8. My god I’ve been missing out. But that was one hell of a roller coaster. I feel slightly like a traitor because Ten was my first Doctor, my Doctor, and the one I RP as but.... I think I might love Twelve even just a tiny bit more, which I didn’t think was possible. I also ship Clara/Doctor harder than ever now. xD And I’m really glad the Christmas ep was a thing because if it wasn’t I might have died last night from the finale.

It still felt surreal to Martha to be walking home from her normal job to her normal flat on her normal old Earth. Everything had changed for her. The universe had changed in a million great, huge, tiny ways in her mind that could never be undone. Not all of them had been good. For everybody else, this was just another day. For Martha Jones, every day on Earth had become the strangest day of her life.

Still, it was nice to have some semblance of her ordinary life returned to her after so long. UNIT was behind her and Mickey was presumably still off hunting “monsters” somewhere without her. She was left to find her centre once more amid a chaotic rain of patients, paperwork, and A&E referrals and so far it was going perfectly...alright.

Halfway down the street to her flat, she stopped dead as the last sound she expected broke the air. It had been five years since the last time she’d seen the Doctor and in that span had made her peace with the likely chance she never would again. So when she peeked around a corner to find the TARDIS perfectly real in the alley ahead, her jaw nearly hit the pavement. Glancing both ways for a sign that he might already be out and about, she closed the distance with hesitant steps and knocked on the door.
