Why's Suicide Squad considered a shitty movie lmao it hasn't even come out yet

it embodies everything fucking wrong with modern hollywood. the social media campaign is awful and borderline cringeworthy. the director is a great visual director but awful screenwriter (i.e. zack snyder). drab, no fucking color because we have to be like dark knight and man of steel. the attempt to make things a universe so fucking hard (this will have a shit ton of setups for other movies, do not deny this). the characters have awful tryhard witty dialog trying to be like avengers or guardians. the movie is apparently over 2 and a half hours, dear hollywood fuck your long movies. give me a concise 90 minute or so action movie, unless your david fincher or martin scorsese keep under 130.

i’m still gonna go see it so i guess i’m a hypocrite

Hi, hello. I respect your opinion and though you are entitled to form them under the context you are given, I would like to share my two cents. Not trying to pick a fight lol. I just want to indulge in some discourse.

Before I get into the meat of this, i just want to point out Zack Snyder isn’t the screenwriter for this movie. It’s David Ayer haha.

In all honesty, this seems to infer that Marvel has set up the golden example of what a superhero movie should be. While Avengers and Guardians’ humor didn’t feel forced if you look into Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man you could tell the studio limitations forced them to include Disney-Marvel brand set up due to brand recognition. The negatives are there, if one looks closely. Kind of one of the reasons why Edgar Wright rode off of Ant-Man. Studio interference forced him to create a product that allowed forced humor and conventions he didn’t feel were right to put in his movie.

And, you know, sometimes different is okay. Deviation is good and having all superhero adaptations under the same tone, style, and approach only serves to  what would be the problem having it be darker? I never ever ever play this card because it gets into the territory of “you’re not a true fan!” but having been an avid reader of various DC comic titles and knowing Suicide Squad’s publication history… do you want this property to be lighter…? Surprisingly this movie is a lot more cheerful than Batman v. Superman (which is a topic for another time but I will say that film has more angles to attack it on but I will still defend nonetheless). Suicide Squad has always worked as a grungy dark action thriller at its base publication title. Also of note, the “darker and grittier” approach has always been a staple David Ayer style. I mean, a plot centering on mass murdering super-villains forced by the U.S. government to go on a suicide mission or else the bomb on their neck will explode doesn’t exactly scream Marvel’s light comedy route to me.

As for the Nolanization of DC films…. Yeah. Yeah, you’re on to something there. The concept of Nolanizing DC properties has been met with… generally unfavorable reception even amongst the DC community. We are sick of having our movies play on the tropes Nolan has “re-energized” the superhero market with.

BUT… and this is an extremely important point, too, BUT… one of the main reasons for my defense of Batman v. Superman is that it’s pointing out the writing and tonality mistakes that were in Man of Steel, also influenced by Nolan’s style. I have no fondness for Man of Steel. I consider it objectively the worst DC movie. Green Lantern didn’t feel as trash compared to MoS. Warner Bros. have heard the reception to what people found inherently wrong with Man of Steel’s premise that for the majority of their sequel movie to address the main complaint of Metropolis being destroyed and Superman being too dark is actually a positive note. They’ve made their peace with Nolan and for the better of everyone decided to move on away from that direction… for the most part. While Warner Bros. have learned from Marvel’s audience that we want less realistic and gritty approaches with our movies they still favor a more mature and darker approach (much to my bane of brightening up their movie poster filters). Again, take from that what you will but it’s certainly an indication that we’re in a far off better place than we were in Dark Knight trilogy era.

I have my problems with the movie, too. I think the costume designs are some of the worst. Joker with tattoos is simply too atrocious to even defend. Harley Quinn’s dialogue in the trailers is so very forced-hot topic-psychopath. Like, I get it. I honestly don’t have an opinion on the social media campaigns because… I do not know the lines between trying to bring awareness to your movie and getting annoying with it. I’m annoyed with Jared Leto’s insistence on the Joker role being too far removed.

But at the end of the day, a movie’s social media campaign shouldn’t be a testament to how well the movie itself performs. I’m in no way saying the movie will turn out to be GOOD but to simply dismiss it on negative fronts in the first place is… well, not good.

What the movie HAS that’s noteworthy though, that I see a lot of people dismissing, are the number of roles it has for minorities in actual prominent roles. There are even many women in the core line-up as well as providing supporting roles for them. We have Amanda Waller- a Black woman with a not-so-Hollywood body figure, Killer Croc- played by a Black actor, Deadshot- played by Will Smith, Katana- an Asian female superhero (albeit stereotypical), El Diablo- played by a Mexican actor, Slipknot- played by a Native American actor, Harley Quinn- played by Margo Robbie, and Enchantress- played by Cara Delevingne. There are still rumors of other people of color reportedly playing surprise DC characters (i.e. the Tattoo Man).

This is my two-cents on the whole ordeal, though. Again, we don’t have to agree but I think it helps if we both understand our opposing points!
