finally decided to sit down and watch the incredibles again. there will be no commentary because i’m gonna be too busy watching it

okay i just gotta say

having been married for 3 years now (almost), i really love how bob & helen argue. when i was a kid it just came off to me that everyone in this movie was being super mean for no reason but when you watch it as an adult it’s different. i really appreciate that even when bob is frustrated/angry he basically never lashes out at helen or the kids, his problem is he’s withdrawn and existantialling. i also really appreciate that when they do fight they’re actually more expressing their frustration than attacking each other. it’s only later when things get real that helen (understandably) gets really angry.

also edna’s advice is actually really good, helen’s just melting down over the idea of losing her husband (which is sweet and helps us understand her character) but edna tells her to confront it immediately, hold bob to account by leaning into his concern (all his heroics being forgotten) and reminding him that she’s a super, too. direct action is a blessing in communication.

i love how the movie communicates bob’s competency, like he’s actually handling all the twists and turns of the situation rapidly deteriorating very well, the only thing that throws him off is when his family gets involved. we also see helen’s competency in the plane scene and how she immediately knows something’s up when no one responds on the radio

syndrome is such a fucking good villain, saying ‘i seem to recall you prefer to work alone’ and laughing at him when he believes he’s murdered the guy’s wife and kids???? holy fuck

as previously mentioned bob breaking down and sobbing alone in the containment room shaped my personality

ah the good old days of 2004 when having a voluptuous mom ass was a bad thing. good riddance, we don’t miss you.

also the it’s a neat little parallel to bob’s body image struggles, they really went to great lengths to showcase that these people are equals & soulmates

the kids are really well-written too, they feel very authentically their age and they both have motivations, the writing does a great job of showing how the gravity of the situation sinks in for them and forces them to rise to meet it. dash especially fascinates me in this movie because he’s just the right balance between immature and starting, just starting to get that life is a big deal and stakes are real and you’ve got to care about what you’re doing and try to do the right thing in every situation. the way the kids instinctively protect each other even though all we’ve seen of them so far in the movie is antagonism is just *clenches fist* so good

The Incredibles is incredible on every level

This is why I love Starfire.

No. Like. This scene was really important. This douche hated her entire race and took that hatred out on Starfire. He called her slurs throughout the entire episode. And Starfire just endured it, because she knew her friends loved this guy. And when he is in trouble, about to die; she has every right to let him. But what does she do? She starts trying to help him. And even as she’s trying to save his life, he pushes her away, throwing slurs at her face. But she presses on, and ends up saving him. Do you know how important it was to see this as a kid? That no matter how much someone treats you with hatefulness and cruelty, the right thing to do when they’re in danger is to help them? That’s some powerful shit for a ‘kids show’, and don’t you dare look me in the eye and tell me that all of this is just superhero bullshit.

Even if they dropped the ball with Victor not actually addressing his race and citing his robotics as a reason for prejudice against him, the reason he understood what Starfire felt, this was a landmark episode.

The slur Val-Yor (subtle show) uses, “Troq” means… you know what, let’s just grab Cyborg and Starfire’s moment of dialogue for reference.

Cyborg: What’s up? I thought you said it didn’t mean anything. Starfire: No. I said it means “nothing”. When Val-Yor calls me “Troq”, he is saying that I am worthless, a nothing. Cyborg: Star… Starfire: There are those on other planets who feel Tamaraneans are inferior. Troq is what they call us. Cyborg: So he’s calling you a terrible name. And you know that if you punch him out, it’ll just confirm all the bad stuff he thinks about you? Starfire: Yes. You know what it is like to be judged simply by the way you look? Cyborg: Of course I do. I’m part robot.

The show isn’t pulling any punches here, it may be using alien species, but it’s showing a racist being a racist even while he acts as a superhero, and it uses actual attitudes people may encounter (“You must be one of the good ones.” When he has to acknowledge she saved his life.) This is incredible and the show should have gotten awards for this. More shows should consider these ideas and use them, even as ‘filler’ episodes, because we need to see it. 

Val-Yor is a racist ass. But Starfire doesn’t let him win, and delivers an amazing line in the end, reminding me why Kory is one of the best characters around, even if she was created for the cheesecake appeal in comics, she has a lot more to her, a lot of heart and soul that should be highlighted more often.

Way to go, Teen Titans. You were an amazing part of my teenage years, and I wish we’d gotten more of you.

And Val-Yor represents the bigots who no matter what, if your kind to them or if you punch them in the face, are just gonna dig their heels deeer into the dirt cause they’ve already decided your lesser than them.

And the thing in particular that I like about Starfire’s and Cyborg’s dialog where he says “I’m part robot” as opposed to “I’m black” is that teen titans was a show made in 2007.

By 2007, going to school with black people, the same supermarkets, etc. was more or less normalized. Not a lot of people really looked at a black person side eyes for using the same water fountain that they used. There wasn’t really anymore “White kids in the front and black kids in the back” or people actively segregating people based on race.

It was normalized to be black and for black people to do all the same shit white people did without anyone being segregated or arrested for just walking into the same store as a white person.

But being part robot isn’t. More people are probably afraid of the fact that he’s half a walking machine or more so deals with casual ableism from people who are afraid of him or look at him like he is a monster or freak. Not much unlike people who have visible disabilities that can’t be hidden.

#so basically they hint at ableism rather than sticking purely with racism#and that discrimination regardless of the axis it is one#effects people and you can sympathize and understand how someone feels regardless
