Worbla Giveaway (seriously)

Hi folks! so I work for Worbla.com / Cosplaysupplies.com and we have a bunch of Worbla’s Black Art to give away to ANYONE in the USA or Canada who is interested!

If you’ve wanted a chance to work with Worbla, these sheets are larger than a sheet of paper, measuring 9in x 14in, which is enough to make a bracer, a mask, a bunch of magic wands, all sorts of small detailed jewelry, some cool armor for your BJD, a custom cellphone tripod, your own custom character, some tabletop accessories, a pair of cat ears - and so much more

because if I listed everything this post would never end

These are shipping FOR FREE. All you have to do is make a social media post tagging #workwithworbla (Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter) and follow one of our accounts there, then give us your shipping details.

((Fine print: technically this is a giveaway as we want to make sure that folks who submit actually are going to use the product in some way, so “50% of entries will be by random draw and 50% will be hand chosen” but real talk, we have around 300 sheets to give away and only about 30% have been claimed so far, so those numbers only apply if we get more than 300 valid entries))

If you’re not familiar, Worbla is a line of Thermoplastics that are non-toxic and need only a heat gun to use. Heat, shape, allow to cool, that’s it. Worbla can be used endlessly, and all scraps can be reblended back into each other to make more Worbla!

If you’re able to, please reblog so folks can enjoy some free crafting materials (and help us clear out some of our overstock!)

I know I let this blog kindof falter and die, but for those of you still following - free stuff is always awesome :D

Worbla is the thermoplastic of choice in many circles, but plenty of folks have no idea what it actually is or how it works. This page on Worba.com was designed to explain the Worbla product line from the ground up - great for those who have never worked with thermoplastics before or those not sure what makes Worbla ‘different’.

If you’ve wanted to learn about Worbla - what it’s good for and why you might use it, more than another ‘how to make X with Worbla’ page, Check it out here!

Worbla sealing technique

I’ve been asked many times how I sealed the Worbla on my Wrathion costume for it to look this smooth. I don’t have progress pictures but I can explain since it’s pretty straightforward. This technique not only allows you to have a smooth surface, it gives you the chance to refine the shape and erase seams if, like me, you’re unable to form Worbla perfectly. Also, if you use a flexible paint and varnish on top, your piece will remain bendable without cracking.

So! Last week I was invited to visit Toronto Laser Services and try out laser-cutting worbla. Fun stuff, right? We had discussed it in the past and wanted to put worbla through its paces and see what it could do, and the answer is, obviously, some cool stuff.

Time for some preamble.

(This gets long and has some images so let’s uh, throw down a cut here too. I rarely/if ever use cuts so you know that means it’s long.)

A year ago, I did tests on products to smooth Worbla for painting - Pros and Cons of each. And my favorite of that batch was Flexbond, especially as I live in the land of ‘I can only reliably spraypaint 6 months out of the year’

It took almost a year of negotiations with Rosco, but Worbla.com and Cosplay Supplies are now offering a much more cosplayer-friendly 16oz containers of Flexbond with free shipping when you purchase with thermoplastics.

Flexbond does take a bit of getting used to - it doesn’t behave quite the way Mod Podge and Wood Glue do, and you need a drop of patience when applying it, but the results are worth it: especially when you make armor that has to travel or be stored away.

Sunday progress!  Made a really nerdy dinosaur shirt and then assembled the top part of Necromancer’s back piece.  All of the fiddly bits are made from worbla, and then stuck into some skull heads I picked up last October back when I thought this was somehow getting done for Katsucon.  TBH I’m pretty happy with the choice to go with worbla rather than something like laser cutting or casting; while each piece is slightly different it’s all very secure and it was much simpler to guarantee that the dimensions and angles all lined up with my poles.

The whole thing actually stays put like that without glue just from the sheer angle force, and even slinging it around like a bat'leth doesn’t affect it.

Round Two of the TranspArt contest has come to a close. We had to work with a medium sheet each of Worbla and Transpart as well as two colors of iDye Poly (I got red and blue), and the theme “Out of This World”.

I decided to go back to my roots and remade one of my first ever props–the Sword of Fire and Ice from Magic: the Gathering.

Both blades were made from a base of Transpart that was heat welded together. The ice blade was filled with resin, and the fire blade was covered with dyed transpart to look like fire. Also I added a strand of 36 Neopixels and programmed an Arduino to add a flickering fire LED effect.

I realized...

…that by using an iron and some wax paper, I can consolidate my Worbla scraps! It’s so quick and easy =3

Yup! Parchment paper works well too, especially if you find the wax paper sticks to your Worbla! I also heat Worbla Scraps in a loaf pan and use chopsticks to smoosh the scraps together to get thicker ‘chunks’ to sculpt with! A few options for recycling are on the tutorial page here too!

Round 2 voting is now live, featuring some amazing work!

It’s been fantastic to see what the entrants have come up with, especially when TranspArt can be tricky to integrate in a costume design. If you have a favorite, go cast a vote! The winner of the round wins a great prize and I’m sure they’d love the recognition! (For me, it’s a tie between that awesome TriWizard Cup and the Crystal Gem armor) ((Link for those on mobile: http://www.worbla.com/?p=6457 ))
